fluoride The Truth

Everyday 5.5milion people in the UK drink contaminated water. The water is polluted by a waste chemical that is a left over product from aluminum manufacturing. This chemical is also used in the production of uranium, plastics, air conditioning and rat poison. In certain forms it is used in Prozac and Sarin nerve gas. Our government purposefully pollutes our drinking water. The chemical is sodium fluoride, the best way to allegedly keep your children’s teeth healthy.

For a long time we have been brain washed in to thinking that fluoride is good for our teeth and that to consume it in our drinking water is a good thing. It’s even used in the water of soft drinks we consume. Its found in toothpaste in substantial amounts and is written on the sides of the packet to advertise the product. Because if it didn’t have it we wouldn’t buy it. We have been lead to believe it is something we need.

But do we actually know what it is and has it actually been proven to help our teeth? To answer that we have to take a look at where our fluoride actually comes from. To do that we have to look at the history of the aluminum industry. That’s right, not dentistry, but the history of aluminum manufacturing.

To extract aluminum from aluminum oxide the Hall–Héroult process is used. This process was discovered in 1886 by the American chemist Charles Martin Hall and by the Frenchman Paul Héroult in 1888. Hall also opened the first large-scale aluminum production plant, which later became ALCOA Inc. (ALuminum Company Of America).

In this process alumina, Al2O3, is dissolved in molten cryolite. This mixture is then electrolyzed by passing a direct electric current through it. The electrolysis process produces waste gases. The gases are primarily CO2 and hydrogen fluoride. Hydrogen fluoride is a highly corrosive and toxic gas. The gases are either treated or vented into the atmosphere. The treated hydrogen fluoride is neutralized in to its sodium salt, sodium fluoride.

In the past this waste was very expensive to dispose of and was a hazard to the environment and human health. In the early 1930′s when the gases were vent freely into the air, fluoride pollution caused wide spread health and environmental troubles. The leading health professors of the time labeled fluoride as a poison which had a damaging effect on human health. In the rapidly growing industrial scene this was not good news for either industry or government, who was relying on industry for the economic and military power it was promising.

In October of this year (2010) red mud escaped into the countryside in Hungry, killing people and causing massive environmental destruction. Red mud is a waste product from producing aluminum just as fluoride is. The difference is fluoride cant be put in a pool and stored like red mud, its more difficult to dispose of. The industry realized this in the early 1900s. The fluoride gases caused wide spread harm to people and the environment, as a result the industry was being sued for the damage caused. It decided a safer way to dispose of fluoride was in our drinking water. If you were told red mud was good for you in small doses would you allow the government to add it to your water? Well that’s what they have done with fluoride, and they actually have us believing its good for us!

It was certainly good for ALCOA, as all the law suits went away and they even GOT PAID for the fluoride they put in the water.

Lloyd DeEds, senior toxicologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 1933 wrote “It is a well-established fact that chronic intoxication may manifest itself in man as recognized abnormalities only after constant, or at least frequent, exposure over many years….The possibility of fluoride hazard should…be recognized in industry…where this element is discharged into the air as an apparently worthless by-product.”

Because of the damage caused by fluoride in the 1930s, the government was actually trying to remove it from the water because it was seen as a dangerous and harmful chemical.

However In 1939 a scientist funded by ALCOA by the name of Gerald J. Cox stated that “The present trend toward complete removal of fluoride from water and food may need some reversal.”

The cause for this claim came from a lab experiment that Cox conducted in which he fluoridated some lab rats and came to the conclusion that it reduced the cavities found in them. Gerald’s proposal then was that this tasteless, colorless substance should be added to all drinking water to help protect the teeth of children. As you can imagine ALCOA were very happy with this result and were huge supporters of the idea suggested by their scientist. What followed was a huge public relations campaign which tried to convince the public of the health benefits of adding fluoride to the water supply.

In 1947 Oscar R. Ewing, a long-time ALCOA lawyer became head of the Federal Security Agency (later HEW), a position that placed him in charge of the Public Health Service. He then initialized a national water fluoridation campaign. Freud’s nephew, Edward Bernays conducted this PR campaign to promote fluorine ingestion on behalf of Ewing. By applying Freudian theory to induce public acceptance it became one of Bernays most successful campaigns.

“If you can influence group leaders, either with or without their conscious cooperation, you automatically influence the group which they sway.” Edward Bernays from his book Propaganda

By using this methodology Bernays persuaded doctors and dentists of the benefits of fluoride. From there the population followed the new advice of the doctors that they looked to for guidance and care.

The first use of adding fluoride to drinking water was undertaken by the Nazi party who added it to the drinking water of the ghettos and prison camps. They found through human experimentation that fluoride actually made people more docile and subservient as well as sterilizing them. So it was an effective way to dominate a people while also reducing population. This is why Germany fluoridated Poland’s water supply before they invaded the country!

Many of those Nazi scientists found their way to America and were granted immunity despite their crimes against humanity. They brought with them all their knowledge and information on the human experiments they carried out.

Evidence of the effectiveness of fluoride to decrease cavities is nonexistent. In fact there is a vast amount of evidence that concludes that it is ineffective and also detrimental to our health when ingested.

Dr John Colquhoun, former Principal Dental Officer for Auckland, New Zealand changed his mind about fluoride when his worldwide study revealed that dental decay was “slightly better in children in non-fluoridated areas”

DR. Limeback PhD in Biochemistry and a practicing dentist states that “fluoride in water has the effect of delaying tooth eruption and, therefore, simply delays dental decay. There are numerous modern studies to show that there no longer is a difference in dental decay rates between fluoridated and non-fluoridated areas.” He adds “the families of children with rampant dental decay need professional assistance. Are they getting it? Children who grow up in low-income families make poor dietary choices, and lack dental care. Untreated dental decay and lack of professional intervention result in more dental decay.”

There are no proven beneficiary effects of sodium fluoride on teeth or the human body. There is a naturally occurring mineral found in foods that is called calcium-fluoride. This fluoride is not retained in the body like the poisonous sodium fluoride which slowly builds up over time.

Dr. E.H. Bronner nephew of Albert Einstein wrote in 1952 “Even in very small quantities, sodium fluoride is a deadly poison to which no effective antidote has been found. Every exterminator knows that it is the most effective rat-killer. Sodium Fluoride is entirely different from organic calcium-fluoro-phosphate needed by our bodies and provided by nature, in God’s great providence and love, to build and strengthen our bones and our teeth. This organic calcium-fluoro-phosphate, derived from proper foods, is an edible organic salt, insoluble in water and assimilable by the human body; whereas the non-organic sodium fluoride used in fluoridating water is instant poison to the body and fully water soluble. The body refuses to assimilate it.”

George Racey Jordan, in a speech in Washington, D.C. on February 17, 1956, said

The original claims for fluoridation came from the discovery that Texas children seemed to have less cavities, which after all, is not a contagious disease. It was assumed to be due to natural high percentage of calcium-fluoride in the soil. This type of fluoride is not retained in the body like the aluminum waste product [sodium fluoride].

The big problem has been for the aluminum manufacturers to so present, as to transfer the idea, of supposed benefits, from the natural calcium-fluoride, over to the unnatural sodium-fluoride.

They used the big lie technique, that, A FLUORIDE ION, is a FLUORIDE ION, whether it is in combination with calcium or sodium, it would make no difference to humans. They are completely lost if they cannot hold the line on this one point.

Their case falls like a house of cards if it is ever universally understood that calcium-fluoride which is found in hundreds of ordinary foods, is not retained in the body, to poison one, like the artificial aluminum waste product which is harmful, because like arsenic, it is retained in the body.

The effects of this poison on the body are as follows:

Dental fluorosis – Fluorosis is not just a cosmetic effect. The more severe forms are associated with an increase in dental decay. Most children with moderate and severe dental fluorosis seek extensive restorative work.

Fluoride promotes development of bone cancer in young boys according to a recently published Harvard study. Dr. Elise Bassin, acknowledges that perhaps it is the use of these untested and contaminated fluorosilicates that caused the over 500% increase risk of bone cancer.

It lowers birth rates, sperm count, and testosterone levels.

Research in to neurological effects point to Alzheimer disease, Dementia, Attention Deficit Disorder and reduced IQ in children.

Adverse thyroid function: The recent National Academy of Sciences report (NAS: Toxicological Risk of Fluoride in Drinking Water, 2006) outlines in great detail the detrimental effect that fluoride has on the endocrine system, especially the thyroid.

Dr Barry Durrant-Peatfield, a thyroid specialist, believes that fluoride is partially to blame for the high incidence of under active thyroid problems (hypothyroidism) in Birmingham. He says, “There is no doubt that fluoride is enzyme disruptive and one thing it affects is thyroid hormones.” This is because fluoride interferes with the uptake of iodine crucial for the regulation of hormones.

Water in the West Midlands has been fluoridated for forty years. In 2003, the region topped the UK’s “fat list” with 22% of the population classed as clinically obese. Doctors are concerned that pregnant mothers ingesting fluoride from drinking water are predisposing their offspring to obesity.

In the US, an estimated 13 million women have been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, and drugs used to treat hypothyroidism were the second most prescribed medication in 1999.

So why would it be added to our water if all these risks are associated with it, and there are no proven benefits?

In a letter to the Lee Foundation for Nutritional Research, the research chemist Charles Perkins wrote “I have your letter of September 29 asking for further documentation regarding a statement made in my book, “The Truth about Water Fluoridation”, to the effect that the idea of water fluoridation was brought to England from Russia by the Russian Communist Kreminoff. In the 1930′s Hitler and the German Nazis envisioned a world to be dominated and controlled by a Nazi philosophy of pan-Germanism. The German chemists worked out a very ingenious and far-reaching plan of mass-control which was submitted to and adopted by the German General Staff. This plan was to control the population in any given area through mass medication of drinking water supplies. By this method they could control the population in whole areas, reduce population by water medication that would produce sterility in women, and so on. In this scheme of mass-control, sodium fluoride occupied a prominent place.

“Repeated doses of infinitesimal amounts of fluoride will in time reduce an individual’s power to resist domination, by slowly poisoning and narcotizing a certain area of the brain, thus making him submissive to the will of those who wish to govern him”.

So with this in mind what can we make of the UK governments big fluoride push? Some areas of the UK have been fluorinated for a long time, but there are still many areas that aren’t fluorinated. Until 2009 Hampshire was one such area. In a test case to gauge public reaction, the government added the chemical to Hampshire’s water supply. Despite protests the action went ahead and now more people are drinking polluted water.

This is just the start however, with the success of Hampshire the government is keen to spread the poison to other as yet unfluorinated areas. A new law in 2003 allows health authorities to order private water companies to fluorinate the water supply. At present about 5.5 million people drink fluorinated water.

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Finland, Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, Germany, Netherlands and Italy have all banned the addition of fluoride to drinking water. So have Japan and India.

American packets of toothpaste now carry the following warning:

“WARNINGS: Keep out of reach of children under 6 years of age. If you accidentally swallow more than used for brushing, seek PROFESSIONAL HELP or contact a POISON CONTROL center immediately.”

An article in the Daily Mail (January 2010) stated that new research shows “Parents should use toothpaste with stronger concentrations of fluoride to prevent tooth decay in their children.”

This goes hand in hand with advice I received from the local health visitor when my son was 2years old. She said that new research showed that you shouldn’t wash out the child’s mouth after brushing, that way they can swallow some toothpaste so they get ENOUGH fluoride.

So what are we to make of this? We have a chemical waste product that can seriously damage our body and mind. No scientific proof that concludes it provides any benefit for our teeth. A government that is very keen on adding it to all water supplies, and tells health professionals to advise us that our children should use more of it. While toothpaste packets contain poison warnings. If you still think this is a nice chemical to have in your body, enjoy your fluorinated Pepsi and continue to let your child with ADHD drink from the tap.

Fluoride toxicity

From Wikipedia, the free

In high concentrations, soluble fluoride salts are toxic and skin or eye contact with high concentrations of many fluoride salts is dangerous. Referring to a common salt of fluoride, sodium fluoride (NaF), the lethal dose for most adult humans is estimated at 5 to 10 g (which is equivalent to 32 to 64 mg/kg elemental fluoride/kg body weight).[1][2][3] A toxic dose that may lead to adverse health effects is estimated at 3 to 5 mg/kg of elemental fluoride.[4] Ingestion of fluoride can produce gastrointestinal discomfort at doses at least 15 to 20 times lower (0.2–0.3 mg/kg) than lethal doses.[5] Although helpful for dental health in low dosage, chronic exposure to fluoride in large amounts interferes with bone formation. In this way, the greatest examples of fluoride poisoning arises from fluoride-rich ground water.[6]

Acute

MechanismLike most soluble materials, fluoride compounds are readily absorbed by the stomach and intestines, and excreted through the urine. Urine tests have been used to ascertain rates of excretion in order to set upper limits in exposure to fluoride compounds and associated detrimental health effects.[7] Ingested fluoride initially acts locally on the intestinal mucosa, where it forms hydrofluoric acid in the stomach.[8] Thereafter it binds calcium and interferes with various enzymes.[8]

Sources

Historically, most cases of fluoride toxicity have followed accidental ingestion of sodium fluoride based insecticides or rodenticides.[8] Currently, in advanced countries, most cases of fluoride exposure are due to the ingestion of dental fluoride products.[9] Although exposure to these product does not often cause toxicity, in one study 30% of children exposed to fluoride dental products developed mild symptoms.[9] Other sources include glass-etching or chrome-cleaning agents like ammonium bifluoride or hydrofluoric acid,[10][11] industrial exposure to fluxes used to promote the flow of a molten metal on a solid surface, volcanic ejecta (for example, in cattle grazing after an 1845–1846 eruption of Hekla and the 1783–1784 flood basalt eruption of Laki), and metal cleaners. Malfunction of water fluoridation equipment has happened several times, including a notable incident in Alaska.[5]

Organofluorine compounds

Organofluorine compounds only rarely release F− under biological conditions and thus are rarely sources of fluoride poisoning. In order for fluoride poisoning to occur, a compound must release fluoride (F−) ions. Whereas most organofluorine compounds may not release F− because of the strength of the carbon–fluorine bond and its tendency to strengthen as more fluorine atoms are added to a carbon, others do, such as methoxyflurane. The fluorine atom is pervasive in drugs, e.g. Prozac, and many other substances such as freon, Teflon, and blood serum (PFOS, PFOA, and PFNA).

Symptoms

Poisoning comes from ingesting a large amount of fluoride in a short period of time. Ingesting 3–5 mg/kg may cause symptoms to appear, while the estimated lethal dose is 5–10 g (32–64 mg/kg) in adults and 16 mg/kg in children.[8] Severity of symptoms depends upon the amount of fluoride ingested. These include abdominal pain, diarrhea, dysphagia, hypersalivation, mucosal injury, nausea, vomiting. Electrolyte abnormalities including hyperkalemia, hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia, and hypomagnesemia may occur. Neurological symptoms include headache, muscle weakness, hyperactive reflexes, muscular spasms, paresthesia seizures, tetanic contractions, and tremors. In severe cases, multi-organ failure will occur. Death typically results from cardiac arrest, shock, widening of QRS, and various arrhythmias occur.[8]

Fluoride in toothpaste

Children may experience gastrointestinal distress upon ingesting sufficient amounts of flavored toothpaste. Between 1990 and 1994, over 628 people, mostly children, were treated after ingesting too much fluoride from their toothpaste. Gastrointestinal symptoms appear to be the most common problem reported.[12]

Chronic toxicity

In India an estimated 60 million people have been poisoned by well water contaminated by excessive fluoride, which is dissolved from the granite rocks. The effects are particularly evident in the bone deformations of children. Similar or larger problems are anticipated in other countries including China, Uzbekistan, and Ethiopia.[6]

The only generally accepted adverse effect of fluoride at levels used for water fluoridation is dental fluorosis, which can alter the appearance of children's teeth during tooth development; this is mostly mild and usually only an aesthetic concern. Compared to unfluoridated water, fluoridation to 1 mg/L is estimated to cause fluorosis in one of every 6 people (range 4–21), and to cause fluorosis of aesthetic concern in one of every 22 people (range 13.6–∞). Here, "aesthetic concern" is a term used in a standardized scale based on what adolescents would find unacceptable, as measured by a 1996 study of British 14-year-olds.[14]

Consumption of fluoride at levels beyond those used in fluoridated water for a long period of time causes skeletal fluorosis. In some areas, particularly the Asian subcontinent, skeletal fluorosis is endemic. It is known to cause irritable-bowel symptoms and joint pain. Early stages are not clinically obvious, and may be misdiagnosed as (seronegative) rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis.[15]

Other adverse effects may be possible at fluoride intake levels above the recommended dosage, and defluoridation is recommended in these cases. In 1986, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for fluoride at a concentration of 4 milligrams per liter (mg/L), which is the legal limit of fluoride allowed in the water. In 1993, a review by the National Academy of Sciences conducted at the behest of EPA concluded that the 4 mg/L MCL was appropriate.[16] However, in 2006, a 12-person committee of the US National Research Council (NRC) reviewed the health risks associated with fluoride consumption[17] and came to the differing conclusion that the MCL should be lowered. In response to these studies, the EPA has made no change to the MCL.[18][19] U.S. government officials lowered recommended limits for fluoride in water on Friday Jan. 7, 2011, saying some children may be getting tooth damage from too much. The Health and Human Services Department lowered its recommended levels to 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water -- the lower limit of the current recommended range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams. see:http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/01/08/us-usa-fluoride-idUSTRE7064CM20110108

Excess fluoride consumption has been studied as a factor in the following:

A weakening of bones, leading to an increase in hip and wrist fracture. At the level used in fluoridated water, decreased fractures are expected,[14] but the U.S. National Research Council found the overall evidence "suggestive but inadequate for drawing firm conclusions about the risk or safety of exposures at [2 mg/L]", but states that fractures do seem to increase as fluoride is increased from 1 mg/L to 4 mg/L, suggesting a "continuous exposure-effect" dose-response relationship at these levels.

Adverse effects on the kidney. Within the recommended dose, no effects are expected, but chronic ingestion in excess of 12 mg/day are expected to cause adverse effects, and an intake that high is possible when fluoride levels are around 4 mg/L. Those with impaired kidney function are more susceptible to adverse effects.[17]:292

Little research has been done on possible liver damage, although some studies suggest negative effects at chronic ingestion of 23 mg/day.

Chromosomal damage and interference with DNA repair. Overall, the literature from in vitro and rodent studies does not indicate genotoxicity, but the in vivo human studies are inconsistent.

Four epidemiological studies have noted a correlation between increased fluoride and low IQ.[17]:205-223 The most rigorous of these compared an area with mean water concentration of 0.36 ± 0.15 mg/L (range 0.18–0.76 mg/L) to an area with 2.47 ± 0.79 mg/L (range 0.57–4.50 mg/L). Most of these studies did not publish important details, making them difficult to evaluate. If these correlations are caused by fluoride, the mechanism is not known, but the National Research Council speculates that effects on the thyroid could lead to poor test results.[17]:208 Two Chinese meta-analyses which included the previously mentioned studies have also noted this correlation.[20][21] The high-fluoride areas studied had fluoride levels above those used in water fluoridation.

The NRC report stated that "many of the untoward effects of fluoride are due to the formation of AlFx [aluminum fluoride] complexes".[17]:219 This topic has been identified previously as cause for concern.[22] The NRC noted that rats administered fluoride had twice as much aluminum in their brains.[17]:212 When water (1 ppm fluoride) is boiled in aluminum cookware more aluminum is leached and more aluminum fluoride complexes are formed. However, an epidemiological study found that a high-fluoride area had one-fifth the Alzheimer's that a low-fluoride area had,[23] and a 2002 study found that fluoride increased the urinary excretion of aluminum.[24]

Fluoride's suppressive effect on the thyroid is more severe when iodine is deficient, and fluoride is associated with lower levels of iodine.[22] Thyroid effects in humans were associated with fluoride levels 0.05–0.13 mg/kg/day when iodine intake was adequate and 0.01–0.03 mg/kg/day when iodine intake was inadequate.[17]:263 Its mechanisms and effects on the endocrine system remain unclear.[17]:266

History

Danish researcher Kaj Roholm published Fluorine Intoxication in 1937, which was praised in a 1938 review by dental researcher H. Trendley Dean as "probably the outstanding contribution to the literature of fluorine".[25] Since that time, the fluoridation of public water has been widely implemented and has been hailed as one of the top medical achievements of the 20th Century.[26] The effects of fluoride-rich ground water became recognized in the 1990s.[6]
