Iraq Integrity Commission: 479 people convicted of corruption including 3 ministers

Iraq Integrity Commission said on Monday that 479 people were convicted for corruption charges during the first 5 months of the current year 47 of the convicted are high ranked officials including General Directors and 3 Ministers. The commission added that it seized 49 million dollars in corruption issues and it was capable of recuperating 218000 dollars thereof only.

The commission said in a statement Alsumarianews got a copy of which that between the first of January and the first of July it referred 1777 to courts in order to try them in 1448 corruption charges with a 136% increase in comparison with last year.

The statement added that 479 suspects were convicted out of the 627 arrested an increase of 217% in comparison with 2010, 47 of the convicted are high ranked officials including General Directors and 3 Ministers.

The commission said that penal measures were halted because the Minister did not approve 291 suspects in 114 criminal lawsuits. However, in April, article 136 of criminal courts that allow ministers to stop such trials was canceled.

The commission seized 57298744450 Iraqi dinars, i.e. 49 million dollars. However it was capable of recuperating 225457302 dinars i.e. 218000 US dollars, i.e. 0.4% of the overall of the seized sum.

The committee also added that the value of corruption in probes reached 194 billion dollars, in 16860 affairs. The commission said that the ministries which opened lawsuits about corruption charges therein are the following: Ministry of Interior and Municipalities, Ministry of Works, Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Iraq government institutions suffer from financial and administrative corruption which are widespread. Transparency International Organization said in its annual report for 2010 that Iraq is the fourth most corrupted country in the world.
