Washington (AFP): The vice president called on American Joseph Biden Sunday to the continued commitment of the United States in the Iraq war, noting that the country still faces major challenges on the road to the achievement of security and prosperity.Biden wrote in an article published by New York Times newspaper that "the United States will also continue to play its role to establish Iraq's progress," " That's why we won't give up our commitment in Iraq: that the nature of our commitment, rather, the ones that will change, from a military to a civilian."

A security agreement provides for the withdrawal of US forces from Iraq by the end of the year 2011, but officials from both countries claim to maintain limited US mission, to provide air support and military.

There are about 50 thousand US soldiers currently in Iraq, within the framework of a new mission to offer "advice and assistance" as Iraqi troops take gradually command of military operations.

But Joseph Biden confirmed that Iraqi security forces are not yet ready to take over matters.

He added, " So in this difficult economic period we call on Congress to meet our demands on the budget with a view to supporting the US commitment, this includes a diplomatic presence an extensive plan to modernize the Iraqi security forces and police training programme."
