VIVA – Black fungus disease or mucormycosis is a rare serious infection caused by a group of fungi mucormycetes. Apparently, this disease has entered Indonesia, even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

In India, black fungus or black fungus has been reported as an epidemic which at that time began to spread along with the Delta variant that caused the Indian COVID-19 tsunami some time ago.

In most cases that occur in India, this fungus will attack the blood vessels which can cause death of body tissues and decrease oxygen saturation in the blood.

If left untreated, black mold can have a mortality rate of up to 50 percent or more.

Quoted from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, here are a series of facts about black fungus that has entered Indonesia and killed thousands of people in India.

1. Origin
Mucormycetes, a group of fungi that cause black fungus disease, is a type of fungus that can be found in the environment, such as in soil and decaying organic matter, namely leaves, compost, and animal waste.

For most people, this type of fungus is actually harmless. However, for those with weak immune systems, this fungus can cause infections in the lungs or sinuses that can spread throughout the body.

2. Symptoms
Symptoms of black fungus or mucormycosis depend on which part of the body the fungus grows. However, there are a number of symptoms that will be felt by patients when infected with this disease, namely:

Swelling on the right/left face

Headache

Nasal congestion

Fever

Cough

Pain in the chest

Short breath.

On the skin, symptoms can include blisters or blackened boils. In addition, the infected skin area will also feel pain, redness, and swelling around the wound.

Other symptoms of being infected with black fungus include:

Stomach ache

Nausea and vomiting

Gastrointestinal bleeding.

3. Risk factors
Although included in the rare category, there are a number of health conditions that can increase the risk of black fungus disease, namely:

Diabetes

Cancer

Organ transplant

Stem cell transplant

Neutropenia (low white blood cells)

Long term use of steroids

Injecting drug use

High levels of iron in the body (hemochromatosis)

Skin injuries due to surgery, burns, or cuts

Premature birth and low birth weight.

4. Prevention
Until now, there is no vaccine that can prevent mucormycosis. However, there are a number of ways that those with weak immune systems can avoid this infection, namely:

Avoid dusty areas. If it is unavoidable, use a face mask, such as an N95 mask.

Avoid direct contact with buildings damaged by water and infected water, such as flood water or water during other natural disasters.

Avoid activities that involve direct contact with soil or dust, such as gardening or farming. However, if you can't, use closed clothing, shoes, and gloves. Don't forget to wash your hands with soap afterward.

5. Treatment
Black fungus is a serious infection that must be treated with antifungal drugs. To treat it, patients can do further examinations to the doctor so that they can be prescribed drugs according to their respective health conditions.
