Federal Reserve Cuts Rates to Zero, Launches $700 Billion Quantitative Easing

The Federal Reserve took several emergency steps Sunday afternoon to support the economy as the nation slowly shuts down due to the Wuhan coronavirus. Target interest rates were cut to zero to one quarter of one percent, and a $700 billion quantitative easing program was announced.

CNBC reported on additional steps by the Fed (excerpt):

“The Fed also cut reserve requirement ratios for thousands of banks to zero. In addition, in a global coordinated move by centrals banks, the Fed said the Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the Bank of Japan, the European Central Bank, the Federal Reserve, and the Swiss National Bank took action to enhance dollar liquidity around the world through existing dollar swap arrangements.”
