ISTANBUL — Hamdi Ulukaya, a Kurd born in Turkey, is listed among US-based Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People in 2017.

Ulukaya, who is the owner, founder, Chairman, and CEO of Chobani yogurt company, was listed for having "transformed a shuttered factory into a flourishing yogurt company that now employs people in places where jobs have been scarce, such as south-central Idaho and upstate New York," according to Time.

He was also chosen for embodying the American Dream, and for creating jobs for two thousand people in his yogurt factory. Most his employees are native-born American, with hundreds more refugees.

Ulukaya, who is now 44, was born in 1972 to a semi-nomadic family in the Erzincan province in Turkey's Kurdish region. His family owned and operated a sheep, goat, and dairy farm, where they produced cheese and yogurt. After completing his university degree in Ankara, Ulukaya moved to the US, where he started importing feta cheese from Turkey and later opened his own feta cheese plant.

Chobani was founded in 2005. Today, Ulukaya’s monetary worth stands at $1.73 billion.  He is the wealthiest Kurd and one of the richest people in the world.
