Sulaimaniyah Council seeks support of other Iraqi provinces

Tuesday, June 22nd 2010 3:08 PM

Sulaimaniyah, June 22 (AKnews) – To assign Sulaimaniyah Governor and his two Deputies, Sulaimaniyah Provincial Council seeks help from the other Iraqi councils, the Head of the Council confirmed today.

“We have sent all the other Iraqi Provincial Councils a letter to support us for practicing decentralization system”, Kawa Abdullah said on Tuesday.

“Why should the other 17 Provincial Councils have the authority to assign the Governors of the provinces but Sulaimaniyah Council is deprived of this right?”, Abdullah argued.

The vote of the other councils counts for this matter because, if unified, the councils can address the issue in the Iraqi Parliament and government, according to Abdullah.

“Violating some Provincial Councils law, Kurdistan Premier, Barham Ahmad Salih, has in advance, decided to assign Bahroz Mohammed Salih as the Acting Governor of Sulaimaniyah”, the letter by the Council read.

“In addition to this transgression, he has also named two Deputies for the Governor without consulting the Council”, the letter added.

The letter further calls on the other councils to support Sulaimaniyah in enforcing the laws and decentralization systems and practicing democracy without any discrimination.

The life term for Kurdistan Provincial Councils came to an end on January 31,2009 but the term was extended one year by a parliamentary resolution. However, the elections for the councils are yet to be held.
