DOHA: Qatar is expected to aggressively encourage small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to bolster its economic diversification efforts as the Cabinet yesterday formally approved a draft of an Emiri decree that allows setting up a corpus to help small and medium manufacturing projects.

There are also a proposal from the Ministry of Business and Trade to shift the civil and criminal courts of the Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) under the umbrella of the Supreme Judicial Council, Qatar News Agency reported yesterday.

The Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H E Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor Al Thani chaired the cabinet’s weekly meeting held at the Emiri Diwan yesterday. Following the meeting, the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Sheikh Nasser bin Mohamed bin Abdulaziz Al Thani stated the following:

The cabinet considered topics tabled on its agenda and took the following decisions:

First: Approved a draft Emiri decision establishing Qatar Authority for developing small and medium scale projects.

Second: Approved amending the bylaws of Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) of 2010.

Third: Reviewed the following items and adopted the relevant appropriate decisions,

A- The memo of the Ministry of Economy and Finance on forming a committee to study the shifting of the civil and commercial courts affiliated to Qatar Financial Centre (QFC) to be under the umbrella of the Supreme Judiciary Council.

B- The letter of QFC relating to the Center’s activities from July first to September 30,2010.

C- The proposal of the Ministry of Social Affairs amending some provisions of the law No./2/ OF 2007 on housing system and some other cabinet related decisions.
