The European Parliament called for a reduction in the level of representation at the G20 summit to be hosted by Riyadh, via video link on November 21-22; Because of "human rights violations", which observers considered a setback for the kingdom and its efforts. Parliament issued a statement of this recommendation to the European Union and its member states, and said that its aim is "to avoid the legalization of impunity for human rights violations, illegal and arbitrary detentions" in Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia looks forward to making use of this forum in order to shed light on Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's modernization efforts. In a letter to the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Parliament called for placing human rights at the center of all G20 discussions. The two officials are scheduled to participate in the summit if they do not comply with the European Parliament’s recommendation.
