The Undersecretary for Distribution Affairs, Hamid Yunus, said, according to a statement by the ministry, that the gas reserves of Iraq amount to 132 trillion cubic feet, stressing the ministry's keenness to make optimal investment of associated gas and free gas to meet the country's needs of gas energy to secure the uses of electric power generation, petrochemical industries and in industrial fields Other. Yunus added that the amount of associated gas currently invested and resulting from the oil production operations is 1,500 million standard cubic feet (muqmq), explaining that the total production of associated gas and the output from oil extraction operations is 2,700. Yunus pointed out that the ministry’s plans aim to fully invest the remaining quantities of 1,200 mqmq through projects under implementation and completion, indicating that it is hoped that this will be done by the end of the year 2023, and thus the ministry has completed investing the entire produced quantities of associated gas and eliminating the burning operations . He pointed out that the ministry has plans to invest free gas from the Mansouriya field in Diyala governorate and the Akkas field in Anbar governorate, which were referred to their development within the licensing rounds, but due to the security situation and the fight against ISIS terrorist gangs, the contracting companies did not initiate the development process, explaining the ministry to a number of International companies specialized in manufacturing and investing gas in the two fields . The Undersecretary noted that the remaining amount of the associated gas investment is carried out through the implementation of the associated gas investment project in the Nasiriyah processing plant with a capacity of 200 retreaders and in the Halfaya field in Maysan governorate to invest 300 operators. Yunus expected that the two projects will be completed at the end of 2022, in addition to the Artawi Basra gas project to invest 400 tunnels and the Artawi South Gas project to invest 300 tunnels, and they will be completed by the end of 2023. In 2016, the Iraqi Ministry of Oil announced that it would achieve self-sufficiency in producing liquid gas and export quantities in excess of the country's need to provide additional financial resources to the federal treasury . In April 2020, former Iraqi Oil Minister Thamer Al-Ghadhban revealed that the ministry was seeking to add about one billion standard cubic feet of associated gas to national production. And the Iraqi Oil Minister, Ihssan Abdul-Jabbar, expected last August to dispense with the import of gasoline and to rely on the local product by the end of 2023, as well as to stop burning gas in the oil fields during 2025. On September 27, the minister affirmed the ministry’s keenness to expedite the implementation of gas investment projects associated with oil operations , and to convert the flared gas into useful energy that covers a large part of our local needs.
