The Elders' Committee: Sinjar's Political Problem Sunday 08 May 2022 216 Baghdad: Omar Abdul Latif The Committee of Elders in charge of studying the situation of Sinjar district announced that the area’s file is political, not security, after the Nineveh operations announced the stability of the situation after families returned to their areas in the wake of the army’s battles with armed factions backed by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in the district. Committee member Mahmoud al-Araji told Al-Sabah: "The problem in Sinjar district needs societal reconciliation, and this issue cannot be resolved by force of arms and the imposition of wills." Al-Araji added that "the security situation is good and there are no terrorist groups such as ISIS or others in the judiciary, but what exacerbates the problems in this file and renews them every time is the policy that revives the conflict in this region." He continued, "All agreements concluded for the stability of this judiciary are interim, and what is required is comprehensive stability that preserves the security of Sinjar and achieve societal reconciliation among all its parties," noting that "the use of force always brings negative negative results, and for this we are among those who call for accountability for those who break the law." The law is in Sinjar and those who benefit from destabilizing civil peace in it.” Regarding the displacement of judicial families, Al-Araji explained that "news of the armed confrontations between the army and other parties led to the displacement of families from several regions, but some of them returned quickly," expressing "his fear that the Sinjar IDPs would use a political pressure card."
