BMKG: Sunda Strait Megathrust Tsunami Could Reach Jakarta In 3 Hours
Tsunamis in the Sunda Strait could be triggered by volcanic eruptions and tectonic earthquakes sourced in the megathrust zone, according to daryono, head of the earthquake and tsunami mitigation agency of the Climatology and Geophysics Meteorology Agency (BMKG).
Based on historical records, the tsunami caused by the eruption of Mount Krakatau in 1883 was able to reach Jakarta Beach because the height of the tsunami at its source was more than 30 meters, while the tsunami in 2018 was much smaller, so it did not reach Jakarta.
“To find out whether the tsunami caused by the Sunda Strait megathrust earthquake can reach Jakarta, tsunami modeling is needed. Modeling of the Sunda Strait tsunami due to the magnitude 8.7 earthquake conducted by BMKG shows that the tsunami can reach Jakarta Beach,” he said, as quoted from Instagram @daryonobmkg, Monday, August 23, 2021.
The modeling results showed that the tsunami reached Jakarta Beach within about 3 hours after the earthquake with a height of 0.5 meters in Kapuk Muara-Kamal Muara and 0.6 meters in Ancol-Tanjung Priok.
Tsunami modeling is measured from the average sea level (mean sea level). In the worst cases, if a tsunami occurs at high tide, then the height of the tsunami can increase. In addition, the height of the tsunami can also increase if the coast of Jakarta has experienced a decrease in surface (subsiden).
Tsunami modeling has very high uncertainty. This is due to the very sensitive modeling equations with the data and earthquake generating sources used.
“Different data used, then the results will be different. Even if the source of the tsunami is shifted slightly, then the results will also be different. This is why there is always a difference in results between tsunami model makers,” daryono said.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Sunda Strait's megathrust segment is one of Indonesia's seismic gap zones, with no earthquakes for centuries, so it should be watched out for, Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency's (BMKG's) earthquake, tsunami mitigation coordinator Daryono stated.
"The earthquake in Ujung Kulon, Banten, yesterday, was actually not a real threat because the megathrust segment of the Sunda Strait is capable of triggering an earthquake, with a targeted magnitude of 8.7, and this can occur at any time. This is the real threat," Daryono stated on Saturday.
The coordinator noted that no technology had yet been able to forecast when an earthquake will occur, especially with the condition of hundreds of years of no reported earthquake. Moreover, Sunda Strait is located between the locations of two major earthquakes: the 2006 Pangandaran earthquake of M7.7 and the 2007 Bengkulu earthquake of M8.5.Based on historical records of earthquakes and tsunamis, it was found that tsunamis are frequent in the Sunda Strait region. The Sunda Strait tsunamis that occurred in 1722, 1852, and 1958 were caused by earthquakes.
Moreover, the tsunamis in 416, 1883, 1928, and 2018 were related to the eruption of Mount Krakatoa, whereas the tsunamis of 1851, 1883, and 1889 were triggered by avalanche activity.
Daryono noted that strong earthquakes and tsunamis were natural processes that cannot be stopped. The BMKG cannot forecast when they would occur."However, amid the uncertainty, we can still undertake concrete mitigation efforts, such as by construction earthquake-resistant buildings and modeling the dangers of earthquake and tsunamis, and then using this model as a mitigation reference," he remarked.
The coordinator called on the local government to conduct regional planning based on the earthquake and tsunami risk, ready evacuation routes, install evacuation signs, build evacuation sites, and practice evacuation and drills on a regular basis, including edifying on self-evacuation.

For travel to Indonesia, the following requirements are in place: Quarantine Anyone arriving in Indonesia must undertake a mandatory 7-day (as of January 7, 2021) quarantine at facilities designated by the Indonesian government –with all costs borne by the traveler. Indonesian regulations require that all travelers who test positive during hotel quarantine be removed from the primary quarantine hotel and be taken to a government-managed isolation facility.
Travelers must remain for 10-14 days or until he/she receives two negative PCR tests, whichever is longer. Even if the traveler is asymptomatic there will be no release from the isolation facility without two negative PCR tests. The costs for the stay in the isolation facility are the responsibility of the traveler.
A 10-day quarantine with special supervision and protocols will be undertaken for foreign nationals arriving from the 14 countries associated with Omicron-risk (see list below).Omicron cases Probable and confirmed cases of Omicron infection must be isolated in a hospital providing COVID-19 services.
Close contacts of any probable or confirmed Omicron case must be quarantined for 10 days in a centralized quarantine facility.
Vaccination All adult travelers, with limited exceptions, must be vaccinated. Consult details here.
Effective July 6, 2021, the Indonesian Government required all exempted international travelers to present COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card in digital or hard copy upon check-in and arrival in Indonesia.
The Indonesian Government recognizes the following vaccinations, including but not limited to two-doses of Pfizer, Moderna, Sinovac, AstraZeneca, or Sinopharm and single-dose of Johnson & Johnson.

In a bid to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant, the Indonesian government has tightened regulations for the entry of international arrivals into Indonesia.Indonesia annuls red list country ban
As of January 12, 2022, Indonesia has allowed all foreign travelers with valid visas to enter the country. However, they will still have to undergo quarantine for 7 x 24hrs.
The visa types allowed to enter are as follows:
- Work permits;
- Business visas;
- Permanent residence holders;
- Visit visas;
- Diplomatic visas;
- Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Business Travel Card (KPP APEC); and
- Traditional Border Crossing Pass.
International tourists can only enter through Bali or Riau.Visa on arrival services is still suspended until further notice.All visa applications must now be done online through the Indonesian immigration portal.
Indonesian citizens will be allowed to return as normal.
What are the pre-departure requirements to enter Indonesia?
There will be stricter health protocols for both Indonesian and foreign travelers entering the country. They will need to comply with the following requirements before traveling:
- Foreign nationals must be fully vaccinated before entering Indonesia and must show their vaccination certificate to immigration officials upon arrival;
- Indonesia citizens are still permitted to enter the country without being fully vaccinated but will be vaccinated upon completion of their quarantine — this is compulsory;
- In addition to a valid work or resident visa, the foreign traveler must present a PCR test result stating that they are free of COVID-19, taken within 72 hours from the time of departure;
- Foreigner travelers must have health insurance (coverage of at least US$100,000) and can cover the needs for COVID-19 treatment; and
- They must also fill the electronic Health Alert Card (e-HAC) through the PeduliLindungi application, which can be downloaded for free in the Google Play Store or the App Store.
Can foreign travelers enter Indonesia without vaccines?
International travelers that do enter Indonesia without presenting evidence of vaccination will be vaccinated during their quarantine, provided that their COVID-19 test results are negative. This also applies to the following groups:
- Diplomatic visa holders or official visa holders who are with an official ministerial-to-presidential level delegation to Indonesia;
- Children aged 12-17; and
- Holders of an Indonesian residency permit (KITAS, KITAP).
Foreigners already in Indonesia and wish to travel domestically are required to be vaccinated (first dose) through the Indonesian government-initiated vaccination program.
What happens upon arrival in Indonesia?
Checkpoint 1
Upon arrival, travelers will be sorted into their categories as well as data collection by airport officials.
Checkpoint 2
All passengers will head towards the health document verification area, which includes being checked for their vaccination certificates, e-HAC forms, COVID-19 PCR tests from their country of origin. At this point, officials will classify the quarantine locations for travelers.
Checkpoint 3
All passengers will then take a PCR test at the airport, undertaken by health officials.
Checkpoint 4
Passengers will then go through to immigration and customs.
Checkpoint 5
After immigration, passengers will wait at a holding area under the supervision of personnel from the airforce before proceeding to quarantine. They will also be given the results of their COVID test.
Checkpoint 6
Passengers will be escorted to their quarantine locations by bus.
Quarantine for foreign travelers
Foreign travelers are obligated to quarantine at a hotel. Under the new amendments to prevent the spread of the Omicron variant, foreign travelers will now have to quarantine for 7 x 24hrs.
They will undertake a second PCR test on the 6th day of quarantine.
The quarantine hotel and PCR tests will be at the expense of the foreign traveler. If the result is positive, the traveler will be referred to a COVID-19 hospital – where costs will be borne by the foreign traveler.
Indonesian travelers
Indonesian international travelers who are classified as students, migrant workers, or civil servants on international duty will be eligible to stay at government-appointed quarantine facilities. Indonesian citizens who have not been vaccinated can still enter the country but will be vaccinated during quarantine.
They will stay for 7 x 24hrs and will also undertake a second PCR test on the 6th day of quarantine.
The quarantine facilities and PCR tests are free of charge.
However, Indonesian travelers classified outside of the three categories are obligated to pay for the quarantine hotel and PCR tests at their own expense. Their length of stay in quarantine also depends on whether or not they are partially or fully vaccinated.
If the PCR tests are negative, they are allowed to continue their journey. If the Indonesian traveler is found to be positive, they will be sent to a COVID-19 referral hospital, free of charge.

Covid-19 Task Force Revokes Entry Ban for 14 Countries

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Covid-19 Task Force has decided to lift the entry ban of the people coming from 14 countries to Indonesia. The decision was made upon the agreement during a limited meeting on January 10 and was stipulated in Covid-19 Task Force Circular Letter No. 2/2022 concerning Health Protocol during Abroad Travels in Pandemic.
Wiku Adisasmito, the task force spokesman, said the decision was made considering Omicron has spread to 150 of 195 countries around the world or 76 percent.
"If the countries listed are still banned [to enter Indonesia], it will hinder cross-country movement to maintain stabilities including the nation's economic recovery," said Wiku in his statement on Friday, January 14.
Meanwhile, the criteria for foreigners aiming to enter Indonesia are still as strict as before, which are stated in the aforementioned circular letter.
Based on the revocation of the entry ban, the government decided to equalize quarantine times for travelers to 7x24 hours as stated in Task Force Decision Letter No.3/2022 concerning the entry point, quarantine centers, and mandatory RT-PCR for Indonesians who traveled abroad.
According to Wiku, this decision was supported by scientific findings in several countries, such as the study by Brandal and associates in 2021 where they found that Omicron's incubation period is three days after exposures. The early investigation report in Japan in 2022 also stated the virus will peak on the third or sixth days following the symptoms.
Additionally, USA Centers for Disease Control or CDC has recommended a shorter quarantine period after it was scientifically proven that the infection is transmitted on the first or second days before the symptoms show until the following 2-3 days.
"Quarantine aims to find the symptoms, as there is a gap between the first contacts and when the symptoms show. Therefore, the chance of infection among the public is avoidable," WIku said.
Based on recent studies, he went on, the new variant symptoms are averagely detected early, that is why 7 days quarantine will suffice. "Especially with multiple tests at the entry and exit and strict monitoring with SGTF and WGS that align with WHO multi-layered recommendations concerning the international travel."

Who is eligible?
In response to the emergence of the new SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 as stated in Circular of Covid-19 Task Force No. 1 Year 2022, as of 7 January 2022 the government temporarily restricted the entry of foreign nationals, both directly and transit in a foreign country, who have lived and/or visited, within 14 days, in the states/regions with the following criteria:

Have confirmed community transmission of new variants SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529 : South Africa, Botswana, Norway; and France

Are geographically close to the community transmission countries that have significantly increased cases of the new variant B.1.1.529 such as: Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, and Lesotho.

With confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.529. exceeding 10,000: England and Denmark.
Based on Circular of the COVID-19 Handling Task Force Number 15 of 2021 regarding 19 Foreign Countries Citizenship Status Allowed to Enter Indonesia, international travelers with passports from these countries are eligible to enter Bali:

These 19 countries were chosen by the Indonesian Government as they have a low COVID-19 positivity rate, in accordance with the standards of World Health Organizations (WHO). However, due to the recent development as stated in the Circular of Covid-19 Task Force No. 1 Year 2022, foreign travelers with the citizenship status of those listed countries will not be able to enter Indonesia if they cannot fulfill the requirements as referred in the criteria above.

Arrival protocols
According to the Instruction of Ministry of Home Affairs No. 58 Year 2021, foreign travelers who intend to visit Bali must go through Soekarno Hatta Airport in Banten, Raja Haji Fisabilillah Airport in Riau Islands, or Sam Ratulangi Airport in North Sulawesi beforehand.
When you have arrived in Bali, there are several measures you need to take before you can continue your travel. According to the Circular of Covid-19 Task Force No. 26 Year 2021 as of 29 November 2021, all international travelers, whether they are Indonesian citizens or foreign nationals, should comply with the existing health protocols.
Foreign nationals who do not have a history of travel and/or stay within states/regions with the criteria stated in the first section for 14 days, are allowed to enter the territory of Indonesia under the following conditions:

Quarantine rules
According to the Circular of Covid-19 Task Force No. 1 Year 2022, as of 7 January 2022 you are also required to undergo mandatory 7 x 24 hours or 10 x 24 hours quarantine following your arrival, granted that you have received a full-dose vaccine.

Indonesian citizens and foreign nationals who arrived from states/regions outside of the criteria are required to undergo a 7 x 24 hours quarantine.

Indonesian citizens who have a history of travel and/or stay within states/regions with the criteria stated in the eligibility section mentioned above for 14 days, are still allowed to enter Indonesia by taking another RT-PCR test as well as undergoing a 10 x 24 hours quarantine
- For Indonesian citizens, specifically Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI); Students; or Government Employees who return from overseas official trips in accordance with the Decree of the Head of the Task Force Handling COVID-19 Number 14 of 2021, the quarantine accommodations and RT-PCR test will be borne by the government
- For Indonesian citizens (not on the criteria for the previous points) and foreigners must undergo a self-funded quarantine accommodation (hotels/inns) recommended by the COVID-19 Task Force and have met the terms and conditions of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association and the Ministry of Health.
A day before the quarantine period ends, another RT-PCR test will be conducted. If the test shows a negative result, on the last day of quarantine, you will be declared for completed quarantine. Meanwhile, if the RT-PCR test shows positive result then you will have to undergo the following procedures:
- Treatment in centralized isolation facilities for asymptomatic people and people with mild symptoms.

Indonesia earthquake: Buildings rocked by 6.7 magnitude tremor near Jakarta
Indonesia's meteorology agency (BMGK) said the earthquake hit 32 miles off Banten province at a depth of 10 km, but did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has rocked Indonesia, with terrified people forced to flee buildings as the ground rocked.
Tremors were felt at least 100 miles way, witnesses have said, while buildings were damaged in Pandeglang in Banten.Families were forced to evacuate their homes as the quake unfolded this morning.
Indonesia's meteorology agency (BMGK) said the earthquake hit 32 miles off Banten province at a depth of 10 km, but did not have the potential to cause a tsunami.
In Jakarta, the tremors were felt strongly. Jakarta resident and nanny, Ani, 38, said: "I was very scared, suddenly there was a quake and it was so strong.

Another resident, Ade, 34, was on the 15th floor of a Banten apartment.
"I was in a Zoom meeting when people all shouted 'Earthquake!'," said Ade, who declined to give her second name.
"The tremors were so strong and I was in shock, I couldn't immediately get downstairs, I needed to steady my body."
The quake was also felt in the provinces of West Java and Lampung, on Sumatra island.

The agency said it had received initial reports of damage in Pandeglang in Banten.

Covid variant or ‘scariant’? Experts warn a future ‘Deltacron’ is possible

Health experts have cast doubt on reports of a possible Covid-19 mutation combining elements of both the Delta and Omicron variants. While the evidence on “Deltacron” remains scarce, French virologists warn that the emergence of such hybrid strains is a distinct possibility.
Talk of a possible new hybrid variant with a name from a Hollywood disaster B-movie spread like wildfire on social media at the weekend, leaving behind the now customary trail of conspiracy theories and black humour. While some prominent scientists rushed to warn against the risk of peddling disinformation, others have argued that rampant variants make the threat of such mutant strains all too real.
The controversy kicked off on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, currently roiled by Europe’s highest Covid-19 rate of infection, where a local team of scientists claimed last week to have discovered the new variant. Led by Leondios Kostrikis, a professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, the scientists said the new strain presented Omicron-like genetic signatures within the Delta genomes – hence the name “Deltacron”.
Kostrikis told local daily Cyprus Times his team had found 25 cases of the mutation, including 11 cases among patients hospitalised with Covid-19. He noted a “higher frequency of mutations among hospital patients, which may suggest a correlation between Deltacron and hospitalisations.” He added it was too early to assess how contagious or dangerous the apparent new strain would become.
Variant or ‘scariant’?
The Cypriot team’s findings have been sent to GISAID, an international database that monitors and shares official data on Covid-19, giving other scientists access to the genetic details of “Deltacron”. Initial reactions have been sceptical at best, with prominent experts suggesting the apparent new strain looks more like a “scariant” – an unconfirmed strain causing a global scare – than a variant.
While it is possible for coronaviruses to genetically merge, a process known as biological recombination, experts noted that the alleged mutations identified by the Cypriot team were located on a part of the genome that is vulnerable to error in certain sequencing procedures.
"The Cypriot 'Deltacron' sequences reported by several large media outlets look to be quite clearly contamination," Tom Peacock, a virologist with the infectious diseases department at Imperial College London, tweeted at the weekend. In other words, according to Peacock, the reported new strain was most likely the result of a lab error, mixing samples from patients infected by Omicron and others by Delta.
Kostrikis promptly hit back, telling Bloomberg news agency in an emailed statement that the cases he identified “indicate an evolutionary pressure to an ancestral strain to acquire these mutations and not a result of a single recombination event.”
He pointed to at least one sequence from Israel deposited in a global database that exhibits genetic characteristics of the hybrid variant, adding: “These findings refute the undocumented statements that deltacron is a result of a technical error.”
‘Perfectly possible’
Since the start of the pandemic, scientists have struggled to counter a deluge of disinformation about Covid-19, much of it circulating online. Last week, unverified reports emerged of a "flurona" or "flurone" virus – a combination of flu and coronavirus – which the World Health Organization (WHO) dismissed on Monday.
In this context, is this hardly surprising that news of a “Deltacron” was met with prudence and scepticism among scientists. But according to Christian Bréchot, head of the Global Virus Network and a former director of the Institut Pasteur, there is “no reason to question the quality of the Cypriot team’s work.”
Of course, “from a technical point of view, it is important to ensure that no artifact [editor’s note: lab contamination] erroneously suggests cases of recombination,” Bréchot told FRANCE 24, adding that “further data will be needed to confirm the new variant.”
“In principle, a recombination of different variants is perfectly possible. It’s true of viruses in general and particularly of coronaviruses,” he said. “Once you have a high level of circulation of two variants, the likelihood of them recombining is significantly augmented. And it wouldn’t be the first time this kind of mutation occurs.”
Threat of future ‘Deltacrons’
Such a scenario is indeed perfectly possible, says virologist Christine Rouzioux, professor emeritus at Paris-Descartes University, while stressing the need for more data on the particular case of ‘Deltacron’.
“It is still too early to draw conclusions [on ‘Deltacron’],” she told FRANCE 24. “First we must verify the sequencing and then analyse the results on a cluster of cases. But in theory, the combination is perfectly possible.”
Whether or not this particular new strain is confirmed, the emergence in future of such hybrid variants remains a possibility, Bréchot warned: “So long as variants continue to thrive around the world, we will be at the mercy of this type of development. [...] This situation is further evidence of the fact that a strategy based on giving rich countries preferential access to vaccines is doomed to fail.”
“Delta appears to have originated in India and Omicron probably came from South Africa. Now we’re hearing about Deltacron in Cyprus. It is obvious that national strategies alone cannot work,” Bréchot added. “It is imperative that we define a global strategy, based on vaccinating people around the world.”

Fremantle is developing an English-language scripted project starring Indonesian magician and illusionist The Sacred Riana after striking a partnership with Indonesian firm Wahana Kreator Nusantara.
The American Gods producer is developing horror anthology The Sacred Riana: Bedtime Stories, an English-language series inspired by folklore and urban legends. The Sacred Riana got to the quarter finals of America’s Got Talent.
The two companies are also adapting a local podcast into a scripted series. Ex Addicts, which is based on the Klub Kecanduan Mantan podcast, is a romantic comedy series centered around the lives of a group of quirky people with one common ailment: they can’t get over their exes. In desperation, they establish a support group to help them in their efforts to move on.
Fremantle’s Asia Pacific CEO Chris Oliver-Taylor said: “The Sacred Riana: Bedtime Stories is an outstanding addition to Fremantle’s global drama slate. Indonesian magician and illusionist the Sacred Riana left America’s Got Talent fans spellbound with her run to the quarterfinals, and her videos have attracted hundreds of millions of viewers across YouTube and Facebook.
Now the 27-year-old is getting a show of her own, thanks to a collaboration between Fremantle and Wahana Kreator Nusantara.
“The Sacred Riana: Bedtime Stories is an English-language, Asian horror anthology series set around the continent and inspired by folklore and urban legends,” the companies said in a joint statement released Tuesday. “Each self-contained, stand-alone episode has a unique cast and storyline, delivering Asian horror to a worldwide audience.”
The Sacred Riana (known offstage as Marie Antoinette Riana Graharani) first gained international attention with her winning run on the second series of Asia’s Got Talent in 2017, the region’s own version of the Simon Cowell-created American hit.
The artist creeped out audiences with her plays on a character who leans heavily on the influence of the Japanese horror classic The Ring (1998), with a matching doll that’s a nod to the Hollywood hit The Conjuring (2013). The series in development will also feature her magic and illusions, according to the statement.
“The fact that we are developing an international drama for the world stage, led by an Indonesian superstar such as the Sacred Riana, just shows us all how our industry is changing and great content can come from all corners of the world,” said Chris Oliver-Taylor, Fremantle’s CEO for Asia Pacific.
The partnership is also developing Ex Addicts, a romantic comedy series centered around the lives of people who can’t get over their exes. Both shows are slated to hit markets toward the end of 2018, according to Tuesday’s release.
