IRAQ (Country threat level -5 )

SERIES OF BOMBINGS OCCUR IN BAGHDAD

A series of bombings occurred in various areas of Baghdad on 16 December 2010. At least 11 attacks occurred in the city, 10 of which occurred near-simultaneously in the al-Dujeel area during a procession by Shiite Muslims. The 11th blast occurred in central Baghdad during another Shiite procession marking Ashura. At least five other explosive devices were discovered and neutralized elsewhere in Baghdad. (16 Dec 2010)

  2. Fact is even IF a post under the rumor section has a link it is still a rumor and means nothing more! Nothing! Rumor... I think the info I get at the barber shop has more fact built in. So rumor or not there is NO rule that says it has to have a link. Althought it is nice when a poster does put a link with their rumor but one should only read this section for kicks and giggles.

FOREIGN FIGHTERS ON THE RISE AGAIN

Recent reports indicate that the number of foreign fighters in Iraq has risen markedly in recent months; it remains difficult, however, to ascertain exactly how many foreign militants have traveled to Iraq. Foreign fighters previously comprised a large percentage of militants in Iraq, but in recent years their numbers had declined; the increase has been especially noticeable since around August 2010. Moreover, foreign fighters are believed to have been involved in some of the more recent high-profile attacks in Iraq, including the October 2010 siege of a Catholic church in Baghdad. (06 Dec 2010)

ALLAWI THREATENS TO QUIT GOVERNMENT; TENSIONS PERSIST

Iraqi political figure and leader of the cross-sectarian Iraqiya coalition Ayad Allawi is reportedly threatening to withdraw his participation from the Iraqi government; political factions are currently in the process of forming a government and assigning Cabinet portfolios under incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. However, Allawi has stated that there is a lack of power-sharing in the government, indicating that longstanding tensions between rival factions and ethnic groups continue and place the new government -- which is still being formed -- in jeopardy. Allawi has called on parties to change the current ways or he will quit the government; such a development would be significant, as Allawi is supported by Sunnis, who have been marginalized in the Shiite-led governments since the U.S.-led invasions. THREE U.A.E. NATIONALS KIDNAPPED IN IRAQ; RELEASED UNHARMED

It has been reported that three U.A.E. nationals were recently abducted in Iraq, but were released unharmed several days later to U.A.E. authorities on 5 December 2010. Details regarding the kidnapping are very limited, and unconfirmed reports state that the men were abducted sometime last week while on a hunting trip in the Anbar province. It is not known if the abductors belonged to a known militant or criminal group, but a ransom was reportedly demanded in exchange for the Emiratis’ release. Several other Iraqis abducted at the same time are still being held. (07 Dec 2010)

    PARLIAMENT MEETS IN BAGHDAD

The new Iraqi Parliament met in Baghdad on 21 November 2010, one day after observance of the Eid al-Adha holiday ended. Rival political camps recently agreed on a deal to form a new government, but the Parliament was not scheduled to meet until after the holiday ended. The session was expected to focus on discussing parliamentary rules and the formation of legislation committees. (21 Nov 2010)
