Complete WIS 2012 SC Presidential Primary coverage COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - It's the one right all Americans hold dear: the right to vote. But, according to an investigation from the Department of Motor Vehicles, 957 South Carolinian exercised that right from the grave. "In my opinion, and I'm not an expert in this area, dead guys shouldn't be allowed to vote," said DMV director Kevin Shwedo. Shwedo had his staff look at the list of people who cast a vote in 2010 then compared that list to the Social Security Administration's list of death certificates. The evidence showed, once again, 957 dead voters voted. "It is technically possible, yes," said Chris Whitmire, spokesman of the State Election Commission, "It's technically possible." Whitmire says his agency has no idea how the DMV came up with its figures. He goes on to say the commission hasn't seen the DMV's evidence, but will cooperate with investigators to figure out what happened. "This claim is very concerning, if true, it would indicate criminal activity," said Whitmire. "It would dilute every valid vote that was cast." Shwedo says the commission knew about the dead votes more than a month ago, but did nothing about it. Then the Department of Justice struck down the state's voter ID law last month using figures the DMV says were wrong including the dead vote count. "If the Election Commission had used the data that I had for them at the end of November, beginning of December," said Shwedo. "None of this would have gotten any further out because all I wanted to see was accurate data reported." Shwedo says he got full cooperation from elections director Marci Andino early in the investigation, but says that cooperation stopped. "They knew there are flaws in their database, they know there are names in their database that have zeroes across the board for Social Security numbers," said Shwedo. Investigators say the commission knew they had problems with their voter registration rolls, but simply did nothing to correct it. Copyright 2012 WIS. All rights reserved.
