U.S.congresswoman Bachmann demands war compensations from Iraq

19/10/2011 14:09

Erbil, Oct. 19 (AKnews) - U.S. congresswoman MicheleBachmann said Iraq should pay the United States for the liberation of thecountry.

Bachmann, who seeks to become the candidate of theRepublican Party for the 2012 Presidential Elections in the United States, spoke at a debate of Republican candidates in Las Vegas Tuesday night.

When she was asked if the U.S. should cut foreign aid toU.S. allies like Israel, Bachmann answered, "Cutting back foreign aid isone thing. Being reimbursed by nations that we have liberated is another. Weshould look to Iraq and Libya to reimburse us for part of what we have done toliberate these nations."

It is not the first time that the issue of war compensationswas raised.

In June, U.S. congressman Dana Rohrabacher said during avisit to Iraq that Iraq should consider “repaying the United States some of themega-dollars that we have spent here in the last eight years”.

Surprisingly, he was supported by Najeeba Najib, Member ofParliament and member of the Finance Committee, saying that this was legitimateaccording to an agreement between the U.S. and Iraq.

“We don’t have any choice but paying compensation to severalparties,” Najib said.

AKnews was unable to find such a document about reparationsbetween the U.S. and Iraq.

However, Rohrabacher proposed a bill as annex to the 2008“U.S.-Iraq Strategic Framework and Status of Forces Agreement” (SFA and SOFA)in April 2008, demanding that “Iraq agrees to reimburse the United States forall costs incurred by the United States related to the presence of UnitedStates Armed Forces in Iraq after the effective date of the agreement, includingthe costs of pay and allowances for members of the United States Armed Forcesserving in Iraq.” The bill was not voted on.

SFA and SOFA rule the relations between Iraq and the U.S. inthe future and set a time-table for the withdrawal of U.S. troops. According toSOFA, the last U.S. soldier has to leave by the end of the year.
