Boehner Stands Firm

Monday, 25 Jul 2011 02:50 PM

By Christopher Ruddy

As the Aug. 2 debt-ceiling deadline looms, we should applaud House Speaker John Boehner for standing firm and not being rolled over by those in the White House and their media campaign.

Boehner has not yielded to demands for new taxes and reducing spending cuts. Nor has he acquiesced to demands that the president be given carte blanche to raise the debt ceiling in the future.

Boehner

Ever since the GOP took control of the House, the president’s approach has been, at worst, one of willful opposition to new ideas and, at best, simple indifference to fixing the nation’s problems. Obama and his spin machine now say they need a debt ceiling agreed to through the next election. Giving him this may not be wise. The debt ceiling has served as a mighty lever to bring Obama to the table.

Make no mistake about it — Obama is not Bill Clinton. Obama doesn’t believe in compromise. When Clinton was faced with a new Republican Congress in 1995, he did a 180-degree turn on many of his agenda items. He embraced Republican ideas like massive welfare reform and even slashed capital gains taxes. The system of give and take and compromise worked and propelled the nation into economic prosperity.

Compare that to today: The president seems to want it his way or no way.

Perhaps politics is playing a big role here. Obama is trying to placate his liberal base, which is angry with him. He won the last election by promising radical changes in foreign policy, especially when it came to U.S. policy toward Iraq, Afghanistan, and Iran. He defeated Hillarious Clinton largely on these issues.

Frankly, since coming to office, Obama has gravitated to the center on foreign policy and has done a fairly good job in that arena. He has kept seasoned veterans in key positions and his recent moves of Gen. David Petraeus to the CIA, and Leon Panetta, former CIA director, to the Defense Department, were brilliant.

No longer able to play the foreign policy card as he did during the campaign, the president has been focusing on those “evil House Republicans” to keep the liberals happy.

One hot-button issue for his base is taxes. The president wants to prove to his liberal base he’s going to go after the wealthy and make them pay.

The problem is that the economy cannot handle new taxes. Speaker Boehner is to be commended for arguing three simple points: 1. The debt ceiling should not be raised to allow the president a free ride until after the 2012 election. 2. There should be no additional “revenues” or tax increases. 3. There needs to be serious spending cuts.

For the most part these spending cuts are not immediate cuts to the federal budget, but are cuts to the rate of growth of government, a sensible approach taken by both Ronald Reagan and Clinton that dramatically improved the country’s finances during the 1980s and ’90s.

Nevertheless, Obama is dead set on new taxes. The Democrats have claimed that such tax increases could be made by closing corporate loopholes and making the tax system more fair for everyone.

At first glance, it seems like a positive idea. But the net effect of this effort, advocated in the Gang of Six’s plan, is to raise taxes over by an additional $1 trillion in new taxes. This tax money will be taken from the private sector and moved into government accounts.

Such a move would be counterproductive. First, new taxes will only help stall the economic recovery. Second, the economy desperately needs new stimulus, not new taxes.

Obama and his advisers must know this. His 2009 stimulus plan was not well planned out and only did half the job. True, it kept the economy from falling off the cliff. At the same time his stimulus, focused on keeping government employees at work, never gave the economy the appropriate lift that it needed.

Republicans favor tax cuts, and I believe they would likely do a deal for more of them.

If Obama did deal — let’s say for a one-year holiday suspension of the FICA tax for all workers and small businesses, it would mean more than $600 billion in additional stimulus immediately put into the economy over the next 12 months.

This would not only re-energize the entire U.S. economy, it would finally signal a move by Obama to the center in a powerful way, helping to pave the way for his re-election.

Can Obama be so bold? As the debt crisis has demonstrated, the president is preoccupied by his party’s liberal base. The truth is they have nowhere to go in the next election.

Instead, Obama should follow Boehner’s path, a pragmatic approach, one that keeps the United States solvent for now and for years to come.

Boehner is a horror of a human being. I think he should be taken out back and horse whipped. This man is one of the most dishonest men in Washington.

He couldn't answer a straight question if you gave him the answer in advance. No matter what level of tax you as individuals are paying, it is a horrible disservice to the men and women who have sacrificed for this country while serving in the military uniform. I say, you have no trouble seeing yourself pay for taxes for the roads or the

bridges.............well it is time for the "big dogs" to begin to pay their way. I hope President Obama takes one look at this garbage coming from the Republicans, and

Veto's it without a backward look. Its time we had a fall here.............that may make people wake up to how much has been taken away from us, by this tidy little

group from Washington called the US Congress and the US Senate.

Boehner Stands Firm

By Christopher Ruddy

As the Aug. 2 debt-ceiling deadline looms, we should applaud House Speaker John Boehner for standing firm and not being rolled over by those in the White House and their media campaign. This is no media campaign and you need to realize that within a week the US is heading for some serious problems. Applaud Boehner for what?

Boehner has not yielded to demands for new taxes and reducing spending cuts. Nor has he acquiesced to demands that the president be given carte blanche to raise the debt ceiling in the future. Demands for new taxes? The only conversation about taxes is that the richest corporations and individuals should pay their fair share in taxes... trim up all the tax loopholes. We've got some of the largest companies in the world paying 0 (zero) taxes and the whole idea is to spread the burden a bit.

Ever since the GOP took control of the House, the president’s approach has been, at worst, one of willful opposition to new ideas and, at best, simple indifference to fixing the nation’s problems. The Republican congress has refused to even look at over 200+ proposals by the President over the last two years. Willful opposition?? Obama and his spin machine now say they need a debt ceiling agreed to through the next election. Giving him this may not be wise. The debt ceiling has served as a mighty lever to bring Obama to the table. Since 1962 the debt ceiling has been raised 74 times.. GW, 7 times. Mighty lever? C'mon!

Make no mistake about it — Obama is not Bill Clinton. Obama doesn’t believe in compromise. Oh Stop... even Republican are saying Obama is compromising. They're proud because they're taking the credit for it to happen.

Absolutely untrue. The Republicans have stood against nearly everything the Democrats have put on the table. This debate being a prime example. It is openly known there are many in the Republican congress that have openly stated in public that they will do anything they can to make sure Obama fails.

Frankly, since coming to office, Obama has gravitated (gravitating means understanding the need to compromise) to the center on foreign policy and has done a fairly good job in that arena.

It's only right that they pay their fair share... just their fair share.

The problem is that the economy cannot handle new taxes. Speaker Boehner is to be commended for arguing three simple points: 1. The debt ceiling should not be raised to allow the president a free ride until after the 2012 election. Where was Boehner when he voted to raise it in the past? 2. There should be no additional “revenues” or tax increases. No new revenues? Let's not create new revenues? OMG 3. There needs to be serious spending cuts. I can agree with this...

The big tax cuts for the rich and big corporations were to help stimulate jobs. How's that working out for us now? Most are holding onto the money until they see improvement in the economy. What happened to that "trickle down" theory?

Such a move would be counterproductive. First, new taxes will only help stall the economic recovery. Second, the economy desperately needs new stimulus, not new taxes. New stimulus but not new revenue?

Obama and his advisers must know this. His 2009 stimulus plan was not well planned out and only did half the job. True, it kept the economy from falling off the cliff. At the same time his stimulus, focused on keeping government employees at work, never gave the economy the appropriate lift that it needed. It "saved" more then it "lifted".

Republicans favor tax cuts, and I believe they would likely do a deal for more of them. More? Taxes are the lowest since the 1950's.. that's a fact. And you want more?

If Obama did deal — let’s say for a one-year holiday suspension of the FICA tax for all workers and small businesses, it would mean more than $600 billion in additional stimulus immediately put into the economy over the next 12 months. Leave Social Security alone. It does NOT need major renovations and personally, my thought is that's MY money... and from what I've seen with most politicians, I don't want them touching my money as most can't balance their own checkbook. Social security has never never been a burden on our debt in this country.. ever.

Be careful what you wish for. It's already been proven that Boehner's plan would have no positive effect on the US AAA credit rating and would most likely still allow for a negative downturn.

Guess what buddy,

I worked my xss off to build my company of 16 employees the past 22 years. If the taxes get raised on my business and or me personally, I will definitely make some cuts to balance out my losses. I did not scrape and work very long days and at times starve my family to build this business, to have it impacted by higher taxes. I have personally sold off personal items to keep the company afloat the past few years and keep my people employed. All my pears have shared with me that they will do the same. If the tax rules change for the worse, be assured you will have more people out of work.

I agree with you.

I served my country in the Army and am not unpatriotic in the least bit. I am neither Democrat nor Republican. In regards to taxes I don't mind paying my fair share but I don't feel we should be called to pay extra just so the government can waste more and continue running up the deficit. What is wrong with trying to balance the budget and get spending under control? The US taxes the rich more than most other countries do. If you don't believe me do a Google search for " The US Taxes the Rich More than Any Other Country ". Or visit http : // www . taxfoundation . org/blog/show/27134 . html. You willl see that the top 10 percent of households in the U.S. pays 45.1 percent of all income taxes (both personal income and payroll taxes combined) in the country. And this is AFTER people took advantage of loopholes and tax cuts. The number gets even bigger when you look past the top 10%. Have any idea of the total percentage of taxes the government receives that come from the Rich people who Obama makes seems like they don't pay taxes? There are more non wealthy people who CAN but DON'T pay taxes but he makes no mention of them. He makes everything out to be the fault of the Rich. To him being rich is some crime. And if you have 250,000+ according to him you should have a tax increase.

If taxes was the answer we would not have the problems we are having now. Increased taxes will do nothing to help matters if the money simply gets wasted. I just wish Obama would be honest and not make it seem as though the rich don't pay their fair share of taxes. Sure, there are a lot of loopholes and tax minimization solutions that many use BUT the rich still pay a great deal of taxes.

Is that you hiding behind that name Barack???

You have got to be kidding about being the most dishonest man in Washington.... Obama has lied about everything from day one except fundamentally changing America... He sure did that. Oh yea.. How is that change workin for you? In his State of the Union speech in 2009, he said its time to get off of health care and start working on the economy..... Within 2 weeks they are holding a vote on health care and lied about what was in it, as well as Nancy's famous line... "You have to pass it to find out whats in it."

Next Look at Barney Franks.... Oh dont worry about Freddie and Fannie... They are just fine and strong.

How many people lost their retirement on that move.

Dont give me any crap about who is dishonest... If Obama and the dems get the chance.... They WILL take this country from us.

My opinion is that last night Boehner handed Obama his A** on a platter.

Why is it that some in Washington feel that it is ok to Take more from those who do..... to give more to those who dont.

NO ONE in Washington has mentioned anything about fraud in welfare, Illegals, or those on disability that shouldnt be.

DONT GET ME WRONG THERE ARE THOSE WHO NEED HELP IN ALL THOSE CATAGORIES.

How about Washigton its self..... If I dont do my job.... I dont get paid.... Not one congressman has even looked at the pay and benifits that they recieve. Only in our government can you totally screw up, still get paid, and retire after being thrown out with full pay and benifets.....What a joke!!!

What do you think would happen to some of the National Debt if those that served for 6 years and retired were to "not get paid" for the rest of their life. What if they had to find a job to survive and be able to get health care. Ill guarantee that they would make sure the economy was going well so that the COULD find a job.

I cant run my businesses the way they run our government...

Its time to stand tough and do what is right for America.... With out the USA.... there would be no freedom in the world. We are the protectors of those who are free.

NOW IM GOING TO GET A CUP OF COFFEE AND A LADDER AND GET OFF THIS SOAP BOX!

I am the kingfish and I approved this message.

NOT a matter of PAYING extra... It's closing tax breaks and paying a fair share. Be minded, not every small business is taking advantage of loop holes with tax breaks. Got to have a very good accountant as well! Actually, some small business owners would not see a change!

kingfish - it always alarm me when a person calls another a liar or says "he's lying". Such a blanket-ly bad word to describe a person's attempts to do something.

You ask the typical shallow republican question "how's that working for you?"

This President has been in office 2 1/2 years... Every president, economist and reasonable minded citizen knows it will take approximately 4-8 years for a recognizable change in direction. I'm not supporting everything that Washington does, just suggesting that it's hard to turn a curve at 14 trillion dollars per hour.

At the same time..... Lets look at the facts. Job creation in this country is hard right now because business (especially in construction industry) are being squeezed from both sides. Everyone wants it cheaper (I'm in the cabinet business) but supplies cost has gone up because we are no longer buying in bulk. On top of that lets make business owners nervous about the health care.. whether it affects them or not. Now.... housing prices on new homes cant compete with what is on the market. Not much work there. The credit markets have been shut down for years now or very tight. To get a loan you have to have perfect credit and be able to prove that you dont really need it. NOW the govt steps in and says they want to help small businesses with loans... They waited till most small businesses had credit priblems...

How about all the GREEN projects... Well lets see,,, He said himself that energy costs would necessarily skyrocket.... Guess thats the second thing he was truthfull about.

He has now made it so that we aren't supposed to have incadecent light bulbs because they are bad for the environment... The replacements are mostly made overseas, dont last as long, and have mercury in them... guess you have to pay a disposal fee to the government to get rid of those....

The stimulus programs..... Lets see... Mostly Union workers.... Lets see who we can buy today. If you think about it... You can usually hire 3 people at $10.00/hr to every 1 union worker. Wonder where unemployment would be if he would have dumped that money into small business.... AS LOANS!!!! The unions had their time... this aint it!!!! More people working.... More tax revenues!

One time I saw a bumper sticker on a truck and it made me think... It said "IF YOU HAVE IT... A TRUCK BROUGHT IT!" HELLO!!!! Can you think of anything that this statement is wrong about? I suppose you can if you try really hard. The problem is that we are very dependant on oil, not only for transportation but in the everyday items we use. When you think about it the cost of every item we have is affected by a fuel surcharge at some level. This is driving the cost of our items even higher. His idea of a solution to this is to one way or another shut down our oil production. NO ONLY THAT HE WON'T LET US DRILL IN THE GULF AT 5000 FT BUT GAVE BRAZIL $2,000,000,000.00 SO THEY CAN...AT 15,000 F. YES 165 MILES OFF THE COAST OF LOUISIANNA!!! I WOULD THINK THAT IS OUR OIL....THEY TAKE IT FROM US AND THEN SELL IT TO US.

So Oil from Alaska.... exported

Oil from Gulf of Mexico.... Shut down.

Oil from Texas..... indangering a lizzard.

New drilling permits.... Well you can apply if you like.... sooner or later they MIGHT get to it.

So what has he done right. As far as Im concerned they are listed below.

1).

So much for that.

Everything this guy does causes pain and losses to those who are still trying. I am down to my last employee and will probably not be able to keep him much longer without a miracle of work. Im not asking for a hand out, just honesty. I love my country and will do my part to save it. I DO NOT WANT SOCIALISM. I believe in Capitalism and that you should be rewarded for your hard work.

AGAIN.... I dont understand why he feels it is ok to make those who do.... do more..... so those who do not... can continue to do nothing.

When this investment pays out.... I will be using some of mine to run for some office where I can make a difference. After seeing some of the people that are holding office... I GUARANTEE I CAN DO BETTER!!!!!

I don't like this guy and will not support him.

Thats just how I feel.. I know it seems a little scrambled but you get my point.

Have a wonderful day.

Right on kingfish - its a shame that most people will never understand. They have never lived it and seen how difficult it is to try and make a business work in these times.

I'm 34 and have been working since I was 16. I went to college and I'm still paying off my loans. I bought an excavation business in 2008 and have had the pleasure of seeing the system worked. Employees who can afford cigarettes, beer, new vehicles, and homes "qualify" for food stamps because they can’t seem to practice safe sex. Think about this the next time you see someone in the "tobacco" line of Walmart paying cash for a pack of smokes and using food stamps for milk, cheese, and rice krispies.

Certain employees don’t want to work in the late fall and early winter because they only get 35 hours a week, and would rather be on unemployment and "make" $60 less per week via a government check, and cut firewood for cash, rather than come in and earn their pay. These same guys can't seem to manage their money they make in overtime during the summer when they routinely work 50+ hours a week, and supplement their inclement weather weeks, or unemployment checks when the necessary layoff comes during the times of the year that we simply cannot move dirt here in Ohio.

Meanwhile my income statement (on a good year) shows $137,000 of net income. Of that $137,000 - $103,000 goes to the previous owner and for misc. payments on long term liabilities, and $33,800 can go to me for putting in 60 hours a week and taking all the financial risk. BUT instead they tax me @ $35,477 leaving me $1,677 in the hole if I can’t find enough to depreciate to decrease my tax liability. I’ve essentially paid to work and can't even apply for food stamps if I wanted to. I can’t buy a piece of heavy equipment every year to depreciate, because as you see the payments would most certainly put me out of business. And the kicker is – the previous owner paid tax on the sale of the business the day he accepted the first payment (it’s an owner financed deal, since in 2008 no bank would loan money on this construction company that had been in business for 39 years), I pay taxes on this long term liability each year because it’s an “asset”, and when I go to sell a piece of equipment, I get taxed on the income of the sale.

I can’t wait to have to provide all my employees with health insurance, as that will certainly help the bottom line. I graduated high school, college, worked summers, and have never been unemployed in 18 years. All my savings have been used in this company and to survive on until things are paid off. If this company folds, I wouldn’t be eligible for unemployment benefits that has been paid in on my behalf for 18 years, for the simple reason, that I am responsible, driven and ambitious young man who wants his piece of the American dream. I wouldn’t take the government benefits anyway. I have too much pride to have others provide for me.

Go get a small business loan (if you can)- dump your savings into your dream - buy or start a company - deal with the work load, worry, stress, financial risk - find work for you and your employees in this economy (if you can) - then give your hard earned money to Uncle Sam - and tell me how great Obama is.

Hey guys, I've ran several small businesses with the longest tenure of 15 years. Employed several folks in a global technology firm; when you've had to make payroll on a weekly basis and felt the responsibilities of providing for families, then you can understand.

I paid more taxes than a standard household... partially retired now over 4 years and I'm enjoying it at age 48.

My focus was making money in what I knew, if I worried about taxes, I couldn't have focused on my strengths. That was the best advice my accountant could give me. You see, at first I griped constantly, then I refocused and everyone was happy.

You guys are worried about the wrong things!

I respect your personal views; read my original comments again if you want a rebuttal. Things take time and kids don't realize it!

Sounds like an unfavorable deal with your purchase... work with your accountant on the asset depreciation expenses.

Also, you must realize the GW taxes DOES'NT effect you under $250k!

rwe..........your scenario is exactly what the government doesn't get. I'm willing to bet that the majority of small business owners are not making a killing as they allude to. The current President has never owned a business and never struggled with making payroll much less decisions on running a company. Best of luck to you on living the American dream!

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE DEMOCRATS WERE SUPPOSE TO HAVE THIS DONE LAST DECEMBER WHEN THEY HELD BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE. BUT NOOOOOO THEY WANTED TO HAVE THE REPUBLICANS TAKE THE FALL FOR ALL THERE ******* AND NOW THEY ARE WHINING! IF THERE IS ANYONE IN THE WHITE HOUSE THAT CAN LIE AND NOT BLINK AN EYE...........IT YOURS TRULY.......... HE ACTUALLY CALLED US ALL STUPID IN HIS SPEECH.......SAYING THAT MOST OF US NEVER HEARD OF THE DEBT CEILING BEFORE .....ONLY THE PEOPLE IN WASHINGTON KNOWS WHAT IT MEANS......WE ARE STUPID AS USUAL IN THE EYES OF THE LIBERALS! I HOPE BOEHNER STANDS FIRM!

Boehner is afraid of the tea baggers and their stance on no taxes even it is just to help with big business....why should GE and EXXon pay no corporate tax.......is Exxon helping Americans with discount gas at the pump with their zero tax....I think not......I guarantee if seniors miss a single social security check the GOP will pay dearly......If it means the dimise of the GOP I would be willing to sacrifice my check for a few months.......think what you want but the republicans will suffer with America going into default.......I imagine corporate America will get on the phone to the GOP leaders....as bad as they dislike this president they are stuck between a rock and a hard place......

I wouldn't say my focus is on the wrong area. It's difficult not to focus when writing checks to the U.S. Treasury. My whole life revolves around money right now, and is there enough for the month? My men and the previous business owner who I purchased my company from get paid first. Suppliers get paid next, and if there are some scraps left over I may, or may not be able to take a draw. I have excellent credit and take great pride in that. The thing that makes this all bearable is that one day, a few years from now, I will be able to make a respectable living. That is if I can make it through.

If this economy takes a dump worse than it is, and the banks decide to pull my credit line - its over. "Sorry sir, you have never been late on a payment, but we are terming your credit line out for 24 months. We just dont feel that we can lend to construction companies anymore." Regardless if I'm 6 months, 1 year, or two years from my payoff goal. I hit the bricks hard each and every day to find work and capture my share of what is out there. I knew I wasn't in for a cake walk from the get go, and I don't spend any more time than I have to, worrying about the government.

I just get sick of people whos first reaction to this whole debt ceiling crisis, is to tax the rich because "they already have enough". My example is one where on paper, it may look like the company is doing well, but in reality, I come out of it making much less than I feel I deserve. I have a good accountant who helps me lower my tax liability in any legal way that I can, but I feel like the current administration is working toward closing the very loopholes that I need to have enough to make it another year.

Everyone has a different view of what a "fair share" to pay in taxes is. I'll pay what I have to, but I most certainly will not support those who I don't feel are making this a better country, and spending the money I EARNED AND WORKED FOR wisely.

Few will know, or would want to know the stress of working harder than they ever have in their life and still not get the luxury of a paycheck after seven months. I'm sure I will remember that feeling when the day comes where I can take home six figures - and there will be a large group of people out there who believes that I have way more than I ever deserve.

Actually, it was a favorable deal. I can deduct interest from the payments toward the company, but that doesn't add up to much help. We depreciate assets straight line.

One day I will be in the $250K bracket, and thats what I'm worried about. Showing a profit of $250K doesn't always mean thats whats there at the end of the year..................................

You can usually hire 3 people at $10.00/hr to every 1 union worker. Wonder where unemployment would be if he would have dumped that money into small business...I LIKE THAT BUT HOW MANY JOBS DID IT SAVE? YOU MUST UNDERSTAND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF SOME OF THOSE BUSINESSES. WHETHER WE LIKED IT OR NOT, THEY ARE ESSENTIAL TO THE U.S. COULD HAVE BEEN A HUGE FINANCIAL MELTDOWN. READ ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS. IT'S NOT JUST THE U.S. AND NOT JUST OBAMA.. AS LOANS!!!! The unions had their time... this aint it!!!! More people working.... More tax revenues! GOOD POINT BUT WHEN DID THIS START? NO ONE CAN FEED A FAMILY WITH $10.00 PER HOUR!

WE FELT THE HEAT IN OUR TECHNOLOGY BUSINESS IN 2002-2003. WE BEGAN TO LOOK FOR SOLUTIONS (MONEY OR INVESTORS) THEN FINALLY DECIDED TO SELL AFTER 15 YEARS. HAD TO LAYOFF EMPLOYEES BECAUSE WE COULDN'T TURN THE CORNER. DIDN'T BLAME ON BUSH, BLAMED MYSELF FOR NOT MAKING THE BEST DECISIONS, SMALL OR LARGE, IT DIDN'T MATTER.

SO, YOU'RE FOOLING YOURSELF IF YOU THINK IT JUST STARTED IN 2008-2009.

When this investment pays out.... I will be using some of mine to run for some office where I can make a difference. After seeing some of the people that are holding office...
