US Senate committee wants US troops to remain in Iraq

See this a good thing I wonder?

A new US Senate report has suggested a large number of American troops should remain in Iraq after the agreed withdrawal date.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has advised that a large contingent should stay past the end of the year.

The committee determined that American diplomats would not be safe in Iraq if US military forces pulled out of the country completely.

In order to protect the American envoys, Washington wants to make the presence of US troops in Iraq possible with a multi-year funding plan for a US civilian and semi military contingent in Iraq.

The United States is preparing to deploy some 17,000 US diplomats and security contractors to Iraq over the next few months as 50,000 troops prepare to return to the US.

The new plan violates the withdrawal agreement between Baghdad and Washington, and US President Barak Obama's pledge to pull out all US troops by December 2011.

I don't think we will ever be completely out of Iraq. With the demise of Egypt, Iraq is likely to become our best ally in that part of the world. I think we stay, but be as invisible as we can be. Al Asad is a very large air base approx 250 kilometers west of Baghdad. The runway is 3+ miles long. It is very isolated, not located near any large town. We could have a relatively large force there as a contingency and be incognito.
