Plan before Congress to cut VA budget by 4.5 billion dollars

Tea-party spokesperson Rep. Michelle Bachmann is the one pushing this bill forward. She is calling for capping health care spending on veterans and reducing some disability compensations. I hate lobbyists, but this is one time they are needed, for the veteran organizations such as the VFW are getting involved to fight her plan. How she can think it is a good idea to cut funding from the VA budget before others, WHILE we still have active combat going on blows my mind. Maybe her and the rest of Congress can start flying coach and stop giving themselves raises to cut spending.

I know people on here like to blame Obama for everything, but hopefully this opens some eyes that all of the government is run by people who do not have our best interest in mind.

I'm not trying to be selfish, but my $1010 from the VA every month is not even CLOSE to the amount of extra money that I spend because of my losses sustained during active duty in the United States Marine Corps.

Take your life and then start having to pay people to do things for you because you can't...

Help you get dressed because you can't put your arms behind your back

Mow your lawn or trim your vegetation / trees

Move ANY furniture in your house

Jack up your car if you have a flat

Do ANY mechanic work on your car, even changing the oil or brakes

Lift your hands above your head to change lights, let alone paint your walls or ceiling.

I am a big proponent of the tea party, but she / they are WRONG here. Disability payments are necessary and honorable.

Do you mind me asking what injury you were rated on?

I am right there with you. I have all the same issues due to my shoulder. I can't even hold my 1 year old for too long without loosing feeling and strength in my whole arm. However, I only get $120 a month, because they will not rate me higher than 10%. In the last 10 years I have had 2 surgeries, years of physical therapy (time combined), and the option to take morphine pills for pain (i said no thanks). This is my third appeal for more benefits, and finally tonight will be another MRI on my shoulder, as well as a new doctor who admits I have been treated for the wrong diagnosis. They start cutting benefits, it will be even harder to get benefits approved and/or bumped up and proper medical care.

This is classic libtard propaganda. Soon the tea party will be accused of wanting to starve your grandma if they try to reform Social Security. They will be accused of killing millions of children if they stop Obamacare. Socialists never have a valid arguement. Everything is aimed at pulling your heartstrings, stirring your emotions. Just give them trillions of dollars($5 tril in two years) to throw around and then you will have a Utopia. Wrong. Europe tried this and it failed miserably. Face it!!! Everything must be cut! No more sacred cows!!!

We're talking about the VA here and this infomation about the VA is NOT propaganda.

The Republican Party (in general) has proven, during the last 10 years specifically, to be of little support -- and no friend -- to the VA and our veterans. I am ashamed to hear the testimony above regarding each of your hardships and apparent meager personal reparations from our military. I thank you for your service.

Who are you calling idiots? So the VFW, DAV, and AmVets are lying as well? Google it and there are more than just the NY Times as a source.

Uh oh- I found a link to your most precious Fox News talking about it: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/01/29/bachmann-takes-heat-veterans-group-proposing-benefits-cuts/

And when you copied and pasted, you made it seem she was increasing 4.5 billion, but you did not format it properly.

I am putting a snippet of her list, so you can not spin it your way.

If you read both articles, only Fox explains it's to account for SS payments not a cut; plus it was 4 billion out of 400 billion in cuts. Do you have 14 trillion?

Tucked into the outline was $4.5 billion in cuts targeting veterans. She proposed capping increases for health care spending at the Department of Veterans Affairs and cutting disability payments "to account for (Social Security) disability payments."

Reached for comment, Bachmann spokesman Doug Sachtleben told FoxNews.com in an e-mail that Bachmann is not pushing a "budget plan" and "has not introduced legislation to cut veterans benefits."

"Congresswoman Bachmann is not advocating for veterans' benefits to be abolished. She has always said that our nation must properly care for its heroes," he said.

Rather, Sachtleben described the proposal as a "list of suggested cuts to open things up for discussion" on how to reduce the nation's $14 trillion debt.

Bachmann is one of several GOP lawmakers rolling out suggestions for high-dollar spending cuts, as the Congressional Budget Office warns that the nation's debt could reach the size of its entire economy by the end of the decade. President Obama is proposing a five-year partial spending freeze projected to save $400 billion. But that's just a fraction of the $1.5 trillion in red ink the federal government is expected to create this year alone.

New York Times

New York Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr.

Peter D. Feaver of the Boston Globe noted on the sixth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that MoveOn.org ran a full-page advertisement in the New York Times accusing General David Petraeus of activities befitting a traitor. The advertisement alleges, without evidence, that Petraeus would not give an honest, professional assessment of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Feaver noted, "The MoveOn.org ad is vicious ... a deliberate attack on the senior Army commander, in a major daily newspaper, with the intention of destroying as much of his credibility as possible...part of an elaborate effort to undermine public support for the Iraq war, and was foreshadowed by an unnamed Democratic senator who told a reporter, "No one wants to call [Petraeus] a liar on national TV . . . The expectation is that the outside groups will do this for us." The effort is funded by powerful special interests, and has all the trappings of a major political campaign.[16] Within a day it was discovered the New York Times gave MoveOn.org a “hefty discount” for its ad questioning Petraeus’ integrity. According to the director of public relations for the New York Times, “the open rate for an ad of that size and type is $181,692.” A spokesman for MoveOn.org confirmed that the liberal activist group paid only $65,000 for the ad - a reduction of more than $116,000 from the stated rate.[17] In July, 2008, the New York Times rejected an opinion piece written by John McCain, which was responding to earlier piece written by Barack Obama.[18] This came after the New York Times had previously published at least seven op-ed pieces by McCain since 1996, and endorsed him in the 2008 Republican Presidential primaries. The reason the New York Times cited for the July 2008 rejection was that they were asking the McCain campaign to provide a more substantive piece which would contrast his positions with the details of the Obama piece on a point-by-point basis.[19] http://www.conservapedia.com/Liberal_bias#New_York_Times

I have a great way of cutting 14 trillion in a few years.... First Bring all of the troops back to US soil... Second, Quit sending Billions and Billions of dollars in "Aid" to countries that don't give a crap about us and openly mock our way of life... Third, Stop with all the "Bail Outs" if something is going to fail let it fail this America stuff happens and we pick ourselves right back up and move on, Forth, cut taxes on the businesses, I mean small and large the little people are just trying to start up and if the big ones can get less taxes and cut through less red tape some place else they will move... Fifth and final, DRILL HERE AND DRILL NOW, that one is pretty self explanatory. Using these five simple steps in a few years we will be back in the Green biggrin.gif

Bachman wants to properly care for its heroes? Sounds so caring of her. Vets and, in particular, disabled vets are too often getting shafted and do not receive adequate compensation or monetary support to continue living a reasonably decent life. What good is getting $1200 SSA if you can't work at a job? If she really thought they were heroes she'd try to get them more money. She's a big talker and a jerk who attempts to come across as caring and reasonable and knowledgeable. She's as bad as Palin. She'd be laughable if it weren't so sad and such a big waste of our time and money.

Now that sounds like a plan, I would add repealing Obamacare and somehow fix the other entitlement programs like social security and medicare.

I was gonna cut obamacare while they where freaking out about the other stuff... you know sneak one in on them like they do us all the time... and as far as the entitlement plans go we got a couple years till the run out so lets pay off the debt of 14 trillion and once we get back in the black we would discuss entitlement reform biggrin.gif

Dang, if I didn't have bad credit I could run for office... wait sorry they don't want people in there that would actually do stuff... they want talkers not doers... sorry guyssad.gif

You do realize that Fox News is just as biased as the New York Times, right? You can not take everything they say as truth. However, when every major Veteran's group is mobilizing, this is for real. Enought that they had a sit down in Bachmann's office to have her plan described to them in detail.

Right from the AMVETSsite:

"AMVETS’s Acting Legislative Director Christina Roof joined partners from the Independent Budget, Disabled American Veterans, Paralyzed Veterans of America, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, in vocal opposition of the cuts in a meeting at Bachman’s office this afternoon.

“AMVETS did not want to judge before we had all the facts, so we asked Bachmann’s staff to help us understand why the Congresswoman would support a proposal to cut these critical, earned benefits,” said Roof. “Unfortunately, we were not satisfied with the answers we received today or any closer to understanding why. AMVETS offered our assistance, but made it perfectly clear that we could not and would not just sit quietly by while this was still on the table.”

I understand you are putting your perspective, and I respect that, but have your ever served? Veterans benefits and Social Security are 2 TOTALLY different entities. The VA pays us who got hurt protecting this country. Social Security we had to pay into, so it is our right to draw upon it when needed. And let's be honest, those at 100% disability still do not get paid enough to truly live a good life, when you factor in hospital and doctor visits, and everyday life events you can not partake in.
