"No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looks to the future with a lot more optimism."

This line is not true. The Hotel owner got meat from the butcher. The butcher got pigs from the pig farmer. The pig farmer got supplies from the Co-op. The Co-op guy got laid. The hooker got a hotel room.

I love everyones answers. Very creative and thought provoking, but the first thing that comes to mind for me is this:

It's not the matter of a trick question or a play on words. Basically: The motel owner/Hotel proprietor (whichever you wish to call him. Potatoe:potato had the money in his hands for a certain amount of time.

He paid the butcher, who paid the pig farmer, who paid the co-op, who paid the ****, who paid the hotel owner. Full circle right?

Now, take a second to consider the amount of money ACTUALLY spent on a stimulus. Relative to the hundred dollars spent here. I'm not trying to say One hundred dollars is too little money for a 'stimulus' to work. What I am saying is, In a stimulus, the money has to come from somewhere.

Sure the money came from the patron, but he ended up revoking his payment. Nobody really owned the money they spent - not even the proprietor - and that single fact proves nobody got paid.

The debt still stands, as is - however unbeknown to the citizens of the city. Where if you take the REAL stimulus, it put everybody back money. Spend money to make money is the whole idea behind a stimulus. Everybody spent money, nobody made money.

The big thing that everyone is seeming to look over is that the renter took the money back. It's almost as if the prospective renter is the government, every one else is the taxpayer.

That's my two cents.

OH, and a what's a hooker doing renting a hundred dollar motel room? where's the profit in that? And where does the drug dealer factor in to all this? Hookers require drugs to operate. It's like hooker gasoline. ;)

The flaw is this. The house always wins and the house did not gain anything except that depts were paid and society became much easier to deal with. Come on man, the house always wins or why do it? Basically I look at our govrn. as a casino type of situation. Its all lights , whistles , bells, ya know, puttin on a show. It seems like a great place to be, but no one truely just wins, except the house. And if the house is not going to guarantee a win, then they WON'T play. They would never be happy with just a calmer society to deal with.

It is a slow day in the United States, and the streets are deserted because everyone is in the unemployment line. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everyone is living on credit.

An illegal alien "visiting" the country runs through a town (because he doesn't have a car due to the fact he jumped the fence at the border) stops at the nearest job site and lays a $100 bill saying "You can keep my $100 if I slack on the job today."

As soon as he starts his work the employer grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the electrician.

The electrician takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the supplier.

The supplier takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to the gas company.

The gas company takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the lobbyist because without him everything would run on corn or chicken fat.

The lobbyist rushes to the capitol and pays off his Senator.

The Senator then places the $100 back on the job sites counter because he wants the vote come next election.

At that moment the illegal alien comes through the door, states that he worked hard, was not really an illegal alien even though his birth certificate almost looked official picks up the $100 bill and come next election, finds he's made it to the most powerful position in the world!

No one produced anything (except the alien who is now in charge.) No one earned anything. However, the whole country is still up to it's eyeballs in debt but looks to the future with a lot of optimism because the alien gave a speech and told us we need to work harder than all the other aliens who will soon ruin our stimulus package!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a stimulus package works

It is a slow day in the small North Dakota town of Pumphandle, and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everyone is living on credit.

A tourist visiting the area drives through town, stops at the hotel, and lays a $100 bill on the desk saying he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs to pick one for the night.

As soon as he walks upstairs, the motel owner grabs the bill and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher.

The butcher takes the $100 and runs down the street to retire his debt to the pig farmer.

The pig farmer takes the $100 and heads off to pay his bill to his supplier, the Co-op.

The guy at the Co-op takes the $100 and runs to pay his debt to the local prostitute, who has also been facing hard times and has had to offer her "services" on credit.

The hooker rushes to the hotel and pays off her room bill with the hotel owner.

The hotel proprietor then places the $100 back on the counter so the traveler will not suspect anything.

At that moment the traveler comes down the stairs, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, picks up the $100 bill and leaves.

No one produced anything. No one earned anything. However, the whole town is now out of debt and looks to the future with a lot more optimism.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how a stimulus package works.

Ignoring what I consider the insignificant flaws like the name of the city and whether it's a hotel or motel, I think the major flaw is in the first two lines. If everybody is living on credit then why does this tourist deal with cash? And why did he not get a receipt for the cash when he left the $100 bill on the desk? I work in a hotel and I can tell you that nobody pays cash without getting a receipt. (Actually in our hotel you can't even check in without authorizing a certain amount on a credit or debit card. That way the hotel has some recourse in case you trash the room.) So the flaw would be in the fact that the tourist doesn't live on credit. The analogy I think is that the tourist represents the US Govt but the US govt is living on credit and this tourist deals in cash, so there's the flaw.

The other flaw I see as many have already mentioned is that the economy is not stimulated because nothing is produced. Money is a medium for the exchange of good and services. For the economy to grow goods need to be produced or services need to be rendered. Resolution of debt doesn't stimulate the economy because nothing is produced.

One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her.

Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.”

Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt.

As he was tightening up the lug nuts, she rolled down the window and began to talk to him. She told him that she was from St. Louis and was only just passing through. She couldn’t thank him enough for coming to her aid.

Bryan just smiled as he closed her trunk. The lady asked how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She already imagined all the awful things that could have happened had he not stopped. Bryan never thought twice about being paid. This was not a job to him. This was helping someone in need, and God knows there were plenty, who had given him a hand in the past. He had lived his whole life that way, and it never occurred to him to act any other way.

He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed, and Bryan added, “And think of me.”

He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home, disappearing into the twilight.

A few miles down the road the lady saw a small cafe. She went in to grab a bite to eat, and take the chill off before she made the last leg of her trip home. It was a dingy looking restaurant. Outside were two old gas pumps. The whole scene was unfamiliar to her. The waitress came over and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. She had a sweet smile, one that even being on her feet for the whole day couldn’t erase. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. Then she remembered Bryan.

After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a hundred dollar bill. The waitress quickly went to get change for her hundred dollar bill, but the old lady had slipped right out the door. She was gone by the time the waitress came back. The waitress wondered where the lady could be. Then she noticed something written on the napkin.

There were tears in her eyes when she read what the lady wrote: “You don’t owe me anything. I have been there too. Somebody once helped me out, the way I’m helping you. If you really want to pay me back, here is what you do: Do not let this chain of love end with you.”

Under the napkin were four more $100 bills.

Well, there were tables to clear, sugar bowls to fill, and people to serve, but the waitress made it through another day. That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written. How could the lady have known how much she and her husband needed it? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard….

She knew how worried her husband was, and as he lay sleeping next to her, she gave him a soft kiss and whispered soft and low, “Everything’s going to be all right. I love you, Bryan Anderson.”

There is an old saying “What goes around comes around.”

This story depends on everyone in the chain using the 100% of the money to pay their debt. Good luck with that scenario.

This story absolutely requires that scenario , otherwise the "tourist" is gonna have a WTF moment!!! B) Comes down the stairs and there's a quarter on the counter LOL :lol::lol:

If the hotel owner became a pimp on the side, then he could give the prostitute a room for "free" and he could tack on a 15% "fee" for her business, and boom he becomes the most wealthy business men in pumphandle. Not to mention hehcould get her to offer her services at a "discounted" price to the co-op guy, in exchange for a tax to the pig farmer, and get free meat. Boom, kinda like the irish mafia use to run things.

He started out with a possibility of making some money thought he had the perfect room the guy wanted. But in reality he just basicaly used money that he never realy had to use and got lucky in replaceing it.Moral of the story don't spend money on something that is not a sure thing and if you do you should be aware that you could lose it all.

The flaws is the prostitute did not get any profit or paid, as she was given $100 and she paid the hotel with the $100 ending with no profit.

I think the owner of the hotel lost one hundred because the money he was owed went back to the man that gave it to him.

I think I did that wrong.
