"Stay away from Iran": Washington threatens new sanctions and expands targeting to include banks, aviation, shipping, and digital assets

Washington - One News - 9/02/2026

The United States has threatened to impose new sanctions on entities that continue to support Iran or deal with institutions linked to it, as part of expanding its economic pressure campaign on Tehran, while sending a direct message to governments, companies and financial institutions to stay away from transactions that could contribute to supporting the Iranian economy.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent said on Wednesday that Washington's message to those providing support to Iran is clear, adding: "My message to everyone is: stay away," in reference to the US administration's move to expand the circle of sanctions to include those dealing with Tehran.

Bisent explained that the United States is holding talks with parties that are still providing forms of support to Iran, considering that stopping these channels is an essential part of Washington’s strategy to increase economic pressure on Tehran and push it to change its calculations.

The Treasury Secretary revealed that the upcoming sanctions may extend beyond the banking sector to include other sectors, including airlines, the maritime sector, and digital assets, in an indication of a US trend towards expanding the scope of financial and commercial targeting related to Iran.

These statements come after Bisent announced that Washington is moving towards imposing new sanctions on an ongoing basis, indicating the possibility of announcing measures targeting a bank during the current week, followed by targeting another bank the following week, in addition to entities and companies that deal with Iranian institutions subject to sanctions.

According to the approach outlined by Bessent, the United States is preparing to use secondary sanctions more broadly against entities outside Iran if they continue to provide financial or commercial channels to Tehran, potentially exposing targeted institutions to restrictions on their dealings with the U.S. financial system and the dollar.

The expansion of secondary sanctions represents a significant shift in the US pressure campaign, as the targeting is not limited to Iranian institutions themselves, but extends to banks, companies and intermediaries that help them access markets or carry out international financial and commercial transactions.

Bisent’s statements indicate that Washington is moving in the next phase to tighten the financial and trade isolation of Iran in parallel with the military escalation in the region, in an attempt to reduce Tehran’s ability to access financing and foreign markets and raise the cost of dealing with it by international parties.

Thus, the phrase "stay away from Iran" carries a message that goes beyond Tehran itself, placing banks, companies, and countries that maintain financial and commercial dealings with it at risk of further US measures as secondary sanctions expand.
