Diplomatic Official: Baghdad Informed Tehran That Any Visit by an Iranian Official Must Be Through Official Channels

Baghdad - One News - 7/06/2026

A diplomatic official confirmed that the Iraqi government has not informed the Iranian side that General Qaani is “persona non grata,” and no official decision has been issued in this regard.

The official explained that Baghdad informed Tehran that any visit by an Iranian official, regardless of their position, must be conducted through official diplomatic channels and with the knowledge of the Iraqi government, moving away from previous mechanisms that relied on unannounced meetings or special arrangements.

The official said that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s government explained to Iranian officials that Iraq is going through a delicate phase that requires protecting the prestige of the state and not exposing it to any political pressures or embarrassments, especially with the continuation of the anti-corruption campaign, the government’s measures to restrict weapons to the state, and the reorganization of the militias, in addition to the ongoing preparations for the Prime Minister’s anticipated visit to the United States.

Well that at least makes them look more of a professional group. We couldn't just land in each other's countries and expect to see people we feel the need to see or speak to so why should Iran. Good way to help keep Iran at arms length as well. Now they wont be able to dictate to Iraq so easily. I like it!
