Political consensus paves the way for the passage of the oil and gas law.

 Baghdad: Jinan Al-Asadi

The Iraqi Parliament is preparing to introduce the draft oil and gas law in the coming period, amid indications of a political consensus among most blocs to pass it. MP Adel al-Mahalawi, from the Progress Bloc, told Al-Sabah newspaper that the law will be presented to Parliament soon after political understandings are reached. He explained that Prime Minister Ali al-Zubaidi has expressed his willingness to cooperate in finalizing legislation with an economic dimension. He clarified that the law is considered one of the most anticipated pieces of legislation, as it regulates the relationship between the federal government and the oil-producing provinces and contributes to supporting the budget and boosting revenues. Al-Mahalawi added that some technical and political disagreements still exist, but they are resolvable through national consensus. He also noted Parliament's intention to introduce a set of service and economic laws in the coming period in coordination with the government.

Oil Export Deal with Kurdistan Region ‘A Major Achievement,’ Says Iraqi Oil Minister

Baghdad says restarting oil exports through the Kurdistan Region is a strategic step to secure Iraq’s revenues and diversify export routes amid regional instability

ERBIL (Kurdistan24) - As regional tensions continue to cast uncertainty over energy markets and shipping routes, the Iraqi government is moving swiftly to reactivate oil exports through the Kurdistan Region, describing the latest agreement between Erbil and Baghdad as a “major achievement” for Iraq’s national wealth and economic stability.

During a meeting with senior officials from the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Falih al-Zaidi stressed the need to accelerate the resumption of oil exports via the Kurdistan Region and alternative pipelines.

Iraqi Oil Minister Basim Mohammed Khudair described the recent agreement between Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region regarding the oil file as “a major achievement” that would contribute to preserving and developing Iraq’s national resources.

According to the Iraqi government, the move to reactivate exports through the Kurdistan Region and alternative pipelines comes as part of an urgent strategy to address potential risks linked to the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions to southern export operations.

Baghdad aims to prevent any financial crisis by diversifying export gateways and relying on overland export routes through neighboring countries, officials said.

During the meeting, the Iraqi oil minister also announced that Iraq plans to completely end associated gas flaring by the end of 2029.

He said the government is working to ensure the continuity of strategic energy projects and expand the country’s energy sector, including the Basra Sun project in partnership with TotalEnergies.

To support those plans, the oil minister requested that the Council of Ministers approve a stable five-year budget for the ministry.

The meeting also highlighted ongoing coordination between Iraq’s Foreign Ministry and neighboring countries regarding agreements related to overland oil exports, with the aim of ensuring Iraq has alternative export options available amid regional instability.

On March 18, the Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Natural Resources announced that, under the direction of Masrour Barzani and due to the exceptional circumstances facing the country, full coordination had been established with Iraq’s federal Oil Ministry to resume oil exports.

As part of those efforts, the “Saralu” oil station was reactivated to transport 250,000 barrels of oil per day to the Fishkhabour station, from where the oil would be exported through the Kurdistan Region’s pipeline network to the Turkish port of Ceyhan.

The renewed coordination between Erbil and Baghdad marks one of the most significant recent developments in Iraq’s energy sector, as both sides seek to secure export stability and shield the country’s economy from growing regional risks.  https://www.kurdistan24.net/en/story/915252

Parliamentary Oil Committee: Passing the oil and gas law is our priority
economy |

11:29 - 21/05/2026

Mawazin News - Economy
The Oil, Gas, and Natural Resources Committee affirmed that one of its priorities is passing the Oil and Gas Law, which regulates the fair distribution of oil wealth. Committee member Mohammed al-Fartousi stated in an interview with the official newspaper, "One of the committee's priorities in this session is passing the Oil and Gas Law, which regulates the fair distribution of oil wealth." He explained that "this law is considered crucial, especially since Iraq relies on oil for 90 percent of its revenue. Therefore, it is illogical to lack a law regulating the relationship between the federal government and the Kurdistan Region, governing this resource, and regulating the sale process and the central government's control over oil." He added, "The committee is determined to finalize the Oil and Gas Law during this session and will consult with all parties and legal authorities to issue a draft law that ensures no party is wronged." He emphasized that "the committee is serious about passing this law." Al-Fartousi pointed out that "the delay in resuming oil exports via the Ceyhan-Fishkhabur pipeline is due to purely technical reasons." He noted that "the next government's program must include coordination with the Kurdistan Region regarding oil exports and its oil fields, and all of this is linked to the Oil Law." "And gas." He added that "the committee will not start from scratch, but will rely on the previous draft and existing understandings to move towards legislating the law during the next stage."

With the current global shift in who means serious business firmly established, Iraq may finally see the oil/gas law dispute being settled by their own efforts and not the U.S.  especially when their next door neighbor got destroyed.

A few days ago as I was driving and thinking about this journey, I thought  that many of the articles published today could easily be from 5-10 years ago, just rehashed.

i truly appreciate the guys who work hard on this site posting the news. It’s time consuming and its work so what I’m saying doesn’t include them. My comment is for the news sources, not the reposting by our people who stepped up to fill the gap Yota left.
