Western reports: Trump was advised to prevent al-Zaydi from granting senior positions to figures from factions linked to Iran

Baghdad – One News                                                           5/05/2026

Western reports have warned against including figures linked to armed factions or close to Iran in ministerial or senior positions, considering that forming a government that includes figures close to Tehran could harm the future of Iraqi-American relations.

She noted the need for Washington to continue exerting pressure to ensure the formation of a government “that is not subject to the influence of militias,” while at the same time maintaining a balance in the relationship between Baghdad and its international partners.

She added that Iraq represents a crucial arena for confronting Iranian influence and illicit financial activities, as well as combating terrorism, which requires an effective partnership with Baghdad without pushing the country towards an economic or military crisis.

Middle East: Party pressures and an unprecedented scramble for positions limit al-Zaydi's options

Baghdad – One News                                              5/05/2026

The Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper reported that the Iraqi Prime Minister-designate, Ali al-Zaidi, faces a challenge in his ability to deal with politically experienced parties and groups, and the extent to which he can curb their ambitions to obtain government positions, in addition to rejecting the nomination of unqualified figures.

She added that expectations indicate that al-Zaidi will adopt the “old recipe” in choosing the cabinet, by requesting more than one candidate for each position from the parties, so that he can choose between them, while being subject to the pressures of “time constraints, relationships, and the influence of those around him.”

She pointed to an unprecedented rush by parties for government positions, sometimes reaching the point of bargaining with the prime minister-designate over assets, lands and financial investments….

The newspaper indicated that most political forces do not seem concerned with the government program or the nature of the solutions that al-Zaidi will offer to Iraq’s problems, as much as they are concerned with obtaining positions within the executive authority.

See what I mean.  I said this in another thread. Malijerk is hiding in the shadows just waiting for an important position to mess things up again.

DJT knows this too.   And we wait…again.
