Iraq's ruling bloc to decide on Al-Maliki premiership bid in few days

Shafaq News– Baghdad

Iraq’s Coordination Framework (CF), the largest parliamentary alliance bringing together Shiite political forces, will meet this week to decide whether to nominate former prime minister Nouri al-Maliki for a new term as head of government, a political source told Shafaq News on Tuesday.

According to the source, the alliance will hold its regular meeting on Saturday to review several files, including political understandings among its factions and their potential impact on cohesion within the Shiite camp.

The discussions come as al-Maliki, whose State of Law Coalition won 29 seats in the recent parliamentary elections, emerges as a leading contender within the CF, while caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, whose Reconstruction and Development (Al-Ima’ar wal Tanmiya) Coalition secured 46 seats, withdrew from the race for a second term. The source described al-Sudani’s move as a “political tactic” aimed at placing al-Maliki’s candidacy directly before the alliance, particularly as some parties oppose the latter's return to office amid upcoming domestic and regional challenges.

“The Framework seeks to form a strong government that is acceptable to all political forces and capable of maintaining balance in managing the next phase,” he added.

Earlier this week, Firas al-Muslmawi, spokesperson for the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, told Shafaq News that internal discussions within the CF had produced a preference for al-Maliki, citing his leadership experience in managing government affairs.

Under Iraq’s post-2003 power-sharing convention, the presidency is held by a Kurd, the premiership by a Shiite, and the speakership of parliament by a Sunni Arab. Together, CF-aligned forces hold around 180 of the 329 seats in parliament, giving the alliance decisive influence over the formation of the next government.

He can be nominated, but he still has to be voted on and form his government. Maybe there will be a lot of opposition to him.

I would hope and believe this is all BS.  Mark Savoy and Trump know Malijerk is a total Iranian stooge and what he did to Iraq while he was PM. He should be locked up in the Hague.   This must be propaganda nonsense from Malijerk.

As always, we wait and see.

Has anyone else read this on al Maliki or that al- Sudani has backed him?

"Recently, he has resurfaced in the political arena as the likely candidate to return as Prime Minister following the recent elections. On January 13, 2026, it was announced that the current caretaker Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, has stepped aside to make way for al-Maliki. This transition is seen as a pivotal move to resolve the political deadlock within the Shiite Coordination Framework, which has substantial influence in Iraqi politics."

Bad things happen with Maliki at the helm! Shabibi had problems when he went out of the country. Saleh got sentenced to prison and nearly died, lots of dinar disappeared on Maliki's watch. He changed the head of the CBI to his guy. I wouldn't trust him  any further than I could throw him! He is a snake in the grass! It's about time for Al Sadr to rear his ugly head and if my memory serves me well he doesn’t like Maliki either. If we get lucky and get a revalue or a substantial change in value! Color me gone. Adios Muchachos!

I don’t think so.  Malijerk has more tricks up his sleeve than David Copperfield.   If it’s true and he gets in, we are screwed.  I hope I am wrong.

I'm not so sure the powers that be aren't the ones setting him up to get their agenda done. Either way this is banking at its highest level. This guy, Maliki, should have been out a long time ago, but he seems to still be useful, so.........No PM is going to stop this. This is beyond tricks. Now, will the banking elite decide to pull the trigger this year? That's the $3.65 RV question. IMHO
