Trade: Iraq's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) is proceeding steadily and deliberately

announced on Monday that the Iraq's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) is proceeding with steady and deliberate steps, while noting the completion of 7 main files. It confirmed the preparation of accurate answers to 175 questions related to Iraq's accession to the organization.
The ministry's spokesman, Mohamed Hanoun, said in a statement to the official news agency and followed by Mawazine News, that "the current government's efforts to join the Iraq to the World Trade Organization (WTO) exceeded the previous measures combined," noting that "Iraq The accession process resumed after a long hiatus, with the third meeting of the Working Group on in July 2024, during which the updated documents of the commercial system were submitted Iraqi."
"Iraq has completed all the files technical requirements to join the WTO after a negotiation process that extended to more than for twenty years, during which Iraq has faced many challenges and postponements," he said, pointing out that pointed out that "this achievement was achieved during the life of the current government with an intensive qualitative effort that exceeded what has been done in the previous stages combined, and that Iraq is in an advanced position to pave the way for the completion of the Full Membership Requirements".
Hannoun explained that "the national team concerned with by joining and in coordination with the relevant ministries and sectoral authorities and in partnership with international institutions, completed the review and update of all technical files, which included a memorandum of the Foreign Trade, Legislative Implementation Plan, Agricultural Subsidy Schedules, and Licenses File Import, Customs Assessment, SPS Profiles and Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT)".
He continued: "The team prepared accurate answers to the 175 questions and inquiries submitted by the Member States of the Organization, while the The Iraqi customs system to the latest version in line with international standards and enhances Iraq's readiness for the next stages," indicating that "the files will be officially submitted to the WTO Secretariat through diplomatic channels in preparation for the meeting next to the team."
"What has been achieved is the fruit of support of the government and the continuous coordination with all ministries and national institutions, and the efforts of the Department of Foreign Economic Relations in leading this strategic path to Strengthening Iraq's position in the global trading system, serving its national economy and achieving development He pointed out that "the Ministry has held workshops during the past months and training programs to develop national cadres concerned with negotiation and file management with the participation of House of Representatives and the private sector, while technical meetings were resumed to complete the discussion of Tables on Trade in Goods and Services".
"Joining the WTO Al-Alamiyah represents a strategic step to integrate the Iraqi economy into the international trading system and attract investments, and improve the competitiveness of national exports," he said, noting that "The accession process is subject to multilateral international negotiating procedures and varies from country to country to the completion of legislation and reforms, but Iraq is committed to accelerating these in order to achieve the national interest and preserve the sovereignty of economic decision-making."
