Al-Amiri: We do not need international coalition forces in Iraq, and they must leave immediately

Shafaq News / The head of the “Nabni” coalition, Hadi Al-Amiri, renewed, today, Tuesday, his demand for the Iraqi government to end the presence of the international coalition against ISIS, led by the United States of America, in the country.

Al-Amiri said in a speech he delivered during the coalition’s electoral festival in Wasit Governorate, “The Popular Mobilization Forces are the support for the security services and the preserver of Iraq’s unity and sovereignty,” adding that “the Iraqi army, along with the Mobilization Forces and the Federal Police, are capable of defending Iraq.”

He continued by saying, "We do not need the international coalition forces in Iraq, and they must leave immediately," calling on "the Iraqi government to end the presence of the international coalition in Iraq and achieve full national sovereignty for the country."

On January 5, 2020, the Iraqi Parliament voted on a resolution demanding that Baghdad work to remove foreign forces from the country.

The decision came two days after Washington assassinated the commander of the Iranian Quds Force, Qassem Soleimani, and the leader of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces, Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, in an air strike near Baghdad airport.

900 American soldiers are stationed in Syria and 2,500 in Iraq on a mission that the United States says aims to advise and assist local forces in trying to prevent ISIS from re-emerging after it seized vast areas in Syria and Iraq in 2014 before being defeated.
