Reuters: Saudi Arabia and Syria agree to resume relations

Baghdad - people

Reuters quoted three well-informed sources, on Thursday, as saying that Saudi Arabia and Syria had agreed to reopen their embassies after cutting off diplomatic relations more than a decade ago.

This step would greatly pave the way for the return of Damascus to the Arab ranks.

This comes about two weeks after Saudi Arabia and Iran decided to resume relations between them and reopen their embassies in both countries, after 7 years of tensions between the two countries, with Chinese mediation.

The Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, said in statements last month that "a consensus began to form in the Arab world that there is no point in isolating Syria, and that dialogue with Damascus is required at some point in time."

It is noteworthy that Riyadh sent planes loaded with aid to stricken areas controlled by the Syrian government, as part of earthquake relief efforts, after initially sending aid only to northwestern Syria, which is under opposition control.

The United States of America confirmed that its position on "normalization" with the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "has not changed," commenting on the news that talked about Saudi-Syrian negotiations to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries.

A US State Department spokesperson said, "We will not normalize with the Assad regime, and we will not encourage others to normalize in the absence of real and lasting progress towards a political solution in line with Security Council Resolution 2254."

"We have been clear about this with our partners," the spokesperson added. "We continue to urge anyone doing business with Damascus to think sincerely and holistically about how their engagement with the regime can help provide for the needs of Syrians in need no matter where they live, and bring us closer to a solution." politics of this conflict.

"This was our consistent message to our partners in the region," he said, stressing that "in any dealings with the Syrian regime, taking real steps to improve the situation of the people in Syria must be put at the forefront."

The spokesperson urged US partners "to demand sustainable, independent and predictable humanitarian access, including through expanded use of border crossings."

On Thursday, Reuters reported, according to informed sources, that Syria and Saudi Arabia had agreed to reopen their embassies after cutting off diplomatic relations more than a decade ago.

Saudi state television later quoted a Saudi Foreign Ministry official as saying that Riyadh was in talks with Syria to resume providing consular services.
