Expert: The Central Bank stops direct cash sales of the dollar

Baghdad - people

The expert and professor of economics at the University of Basra, Nabil Al-Marsoumi, expected, on Sunday, that the Central Bank of Iraq would stop direct cash sales of dollars, while the media office of the bank said in a statement today that it “denies preventing or restricting cash sales to citizens, and that electronic registration ensures that the citizen’s need for dollars is met.” Repeat sales to the same person are prohibited.

Al-Marsoumi stated in a post titled “The Next Way of the Dollar,” followed by “Nass” (January 29, 2023), that “it is expected that the cash quotas for banks and money changers will be released through the electronic platform in the Central Bank of Iraq only, which means stopping cash sales directly.”

He explained, "Based on the disclosure of the platform, ten thousand dollars will be sold to a person, and it is also expected that the Central Bank will pressure to prevent financing remittances in cash through cashiers."

For its part, the Central Bank statement (January 29, 2023) added, "This measure is an opportunity for citizens to obtain dollars for legitimate purposes without restrictions."

The Central Bank called on "all media and the public to rely on the media office of the bank to obtain information related to its activities and procedures," according to the statement.

Tourism industry's blood flow = currency exchange.

Also, an attempt to shut down street vendors who might have been devaluing the dinar in their hunger for dollars?

So, basically, you can go to the dispensary now instead of buying it on the street ... .

With input/output controls, there will be a system to identify and track the individual exchangers/citizens/tourists. So, money laundering controls on the borders, airports, etc. I guess we take these 'services' for granted!

Now, wondering how they will enforce the controls if individuals are moving more than 10K USD in or out of the country?

The Iraqi version of the IRS is probably in on this to grease their wheels via tax revenue?

Interesting stuff this nation building!?
