Shafaq News/ The Central Bank's sales approached, on Tuesday, 250 million dollars for the first time this year, while a financial expert attributed this rise to the increase in food prices and random imports.

Shafak News Agency correspondent stated, "The Central Bank sold today, during its auction to buy and sell US dollars, 245 million and 103 thousand and 456 US dollars, which were covered by the bank at a base exchange rate of 1460 dinars per dollar.

Our correspondent added that most of the sales went to enhance balances abroad in the form of remittances and credits, which amounted to 197 million and 403 thousand and 456 dollars, while the rest went in the form of cash sales, which amounted to 47 million and 700 thousand dollars.

Our correspondent indicated that 32 banks have fulfilled requests to enhance balances abroad, and 23 banks have responded to cash requests, in addition to 241 mediation companies.

Financial expert Hilal Al-Tahan said in an interview with Shafaq News Agency, "The increase in central bank sales is due to the rise in food prices globally, and thus prompted traders to request transfers greater than the previous amounts for importing foodstuffs, helped by the zeroing of customs."

He added that "random import without restrictions and controls led to a high demand for the dollar," noting that "some traders import luxury goods and commodities that are not useful for local consumption, and therefore the dollar's demand is required to cover these imports."
