The Iranian President received the Prime Minister of Iraq on his one-day visit, during which he will meet with senior officials in Tehran (AFP)

After concluding a visit to Saudi Arabia, this morning, Sunday, June 26, the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi , arrived in the Iranian capital, Tehran .

On his one-day visit, Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi Al-Kazemi received, during which he will meet with senior Iranian officials.

Iranian state television said, "The Iraqi prime minister arrived in Tehran accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes political and economic officials to discuss regional and bilateral issues."

Yesterday, Saturday, Al-Kazemi held talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah. The Saudi Press Agency said that the talks included relations between the two countries and the promotion of security and peace in the region.

The visit comes amid talks about the return of Saudi-Iranian negotiations via an Iraqi woman. And about a month before the Jeddah summit, which US President Joe Biden will attend , and Iraq will participate in it.

And press reports indicated that "the visit comes within the framework of the consultations that Saudi Arabia and Iran recently held in Baghdad," and pointed out that "Al-Kazemi will discuss many files, including diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia."

Exploration of pacification efforts

For his part, Al-Kazemi's media office said that the meeting with the Saudi Crown Prince discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, and the importance of developing them to achieve the interests of the peoples of the two brotherly countries. Efforts to consolidate peace and calm in the region.

The office pointed out, through its account on "Twitter", that the meeting renewed "the affirmation of strengthening economic integration and inter-cooperation in a way that enhances sustainable development in the region and strengthens bilateral efforts to confront economic crises."

The two sides stressed, according to Baghdad's account, "the prominent role of Iraq in bringing the views of the region closer, and pushing forward the efforts of calm and constructive dialogues," referring to the talks between Riyadh and Tehran, which witnessed several rounds mediated by the Iraqi side.

The Iraqi prime minister followed the talks by performing the rites of Umrah in Makkah Al-Mukarramah, before returning to Jeddah, where the Saudis bid him farewell, at dawn today, after a rich official reception.

previous visit

Al-Kazemi visited Saudi Arabia on March 31, 2021. He said at the time, "It is to consolidate the distinguished relations between our two brotherly countries, and to establish prospects for brotherly cooperation between the countries of the region." Subsequently, the two countries signed several economic and security agreements.

Following a meeting that lasted for several hours with the Saudi crown prince, according to several aides to the Iraqi prime minister, Al-Kazemi told reporters, "We will not allow any attack on Saudi Arabia," adding, "As for attacks from Iraq, there were no attacks." And he considered that "there are attempts by some to level accusations to damage relations."

Al-Kazemi’s visit to Riyadh was preceded by the reopening of the Arar border crossing between the two countries in November for the first time since it was closed in 1990 following the Iraqi attack on Kuwait under Saddam Hussein, and it was not officially opened except during the Hajj seasons.

Saudi-Iranian talks

In April, an Iraqi government official told the French press agency that Iran and Saudi Arabia had resumed dialogue sessions in Baghdad after a hiatus for several months, by holding a meeting between representatives of the two capitals as part of efforts aimed at improving the severed relations between them.

During the past year, the largest countries in the Middle East held four dialogue meetings with the aim of improving relations, hosted by Iraq under the supervision of Al-Kazemi. Saudi Arabia cut ties with Iran in January 2016, after its embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad were attacked by Iranian protesters.

A visit to a Saudi official

In May 2021, Saudi Deputy Defense Minister Prince Khaled bin Salman went to Iraq and met President Barham Salih. After the visit, Prince Khalid bin Salman wrote on Twitter, "During my visit to Iraq, I reviewed brotherly relations and what is being done to advance it," adding, "I met Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, Parliament Speaker Muhammad Al-Halbousi, and Iraqi Defense Minister Jumaa Inad Al-Jubouri, The meetings discussed prospects for cooperation and coordination between our two countries, and the ties that bring them together.

That visit, according to Saleh, was preceded by several meetings between the Saudis and the Iranians in Baghdad. An Iraqi diplomat in Baghdad indicated that these talks are accompanied by regional talks on a larger scale.

Iran and the anxiety of existence

Will Iraqi mediation succeed?

And Iraq, which will participate in the Jeddah summit next month, has good relations with neighboring countries, especially Saudi Arabia.

According to observers, the truce between Saudi Arabia and Iran would benefit Iraq, which is still witnessing attacks with missiles or explosive devices, implemented on a weekly basis by factions that are considered a card in Iran's hand that they use in all negotiations with Baghdad, according to Iraqi officials.

Tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia increased in 2019 after an attack on Saudi oil facilities that Riyadh said Iran was responsible for, a charge Tehran denies.

An Iranian official told Reuters, "The resumption of talks between Tehran and Riyadh will be discussed during Al-Kazemi's visit to Iran."

Breaking the deadlock between America and Iran

Al-Kazemi's visit to Tehran comes while the months-long stalemate in indirect talks between the United States and Iran is expected to be broken in the coming days to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement that imposed restrictions on the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for easing economic sanctions imposed on Tehran.

US President Joe Biden is due to visit Riyadh in mid-July, and talks are expected to include concerns about Gulf security stemming from Iran's ballistic missile program and Tehran's network of proxies in the Middle East.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi arrived in Tehran on Sunday, a day after a visit to Saudi Arabia in an effort to revive talks between the kingdom and its regional foe, Iran. Al-Kazemi's visit to Tehran also comes amid expectations of breaking the months-long stalemate in indirect talks between the United States and Iran in the coming days to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement.

One day after a visit to Jeddah during which he met Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman , Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kadhimi began Sunday a visit to Tehran in an effort to revive talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran .

Iran and Saudi Arabia cut ties in 2016, and both support allies in proxy wars across the Middle East from Yemen to Syria and elsewhere.

"The Iraqi prime minister arrived in Tehran, accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes political and economic officials, to discuss regional and bilateral issues," Iranian state television said.

Tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia increased in 2019 after an attack on Saudi oil facilities, for which Riyadh said Iran was responsible, a charge Tehran denies.

stalemate

Al-Kazemi's visit to Tehran comes amid expectations of breaking the months-long stalemate in indirect talks between the United States and Iran in the coming days to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement that imposed restrictions on the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for easing economic sanctions imposed on Tehran.

US President Joe Biden is due to visit Riyadh in mid-July, and talks are expected to include concerns about Gulf security stemming from Iran's ballistic missile program and Tehran's network of proxies in the Middle East.

The fifth round of Saudi-Iranian talks was held in April after Iran suspended negotiations in March without giving a reason, but the action came after Saudi Arabia executed 81 men, in the largest collective execution of punishment in decades. Tehran condemned the execution, which activists said included 41 Shiites.

Al-Kazemi held talks yesterday, Saturday, with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, the de facto ruler of the kingdom, Prince Muhammad bin Salman in Jeddah.

The Saudi Press Agency said that the talks included relations between the two countries and the promotion of security and peace in the region.

It’s interesting that he’s doing these both on the same trip. Saudi (Sunni) and Iran (Shiite) cooperation with regional currency incoming?

That’s the GCC plan

Hopefully.  Kazemi seems more like a diplomat.  He will get this done if he stays as PM.  He is probably cutting deals which I don’t blame him.  Just RV your currency which is seemingly the goal.

Experts: Tehran will ask Baghdad to mediate between it and Cairo

Baghdad - people

Experts in the Iranian affairs expected the Iranian Republic to request "Iraq's mediation" to restore relations between it and Cairo, while indicating that the next step will be a meeting with the Iranian and Saudi foreign ministers in Iraq.

The researcher on Iranian affairs, Saleh Al-Qazwini, said in a statement to the official newspaper, followed by "Nass" (June 28, 2022), that "the negotiations were launched before the government of Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi, and the talks and negotiations continued for more than a year, as they turned into public after they were secret." All this was thanks to Iraq and its government.

He added, "If this matter indicates anything, it indicates the weight and position of Iraq in the two countries, Saudi Arabia and Iran, and their confidence in Iraq's prestige and importance, without which there would be no negotiations and rapprochement between the two countries."
