New details about an Iraqi resident's plot to assassinate former US President Bush Jr

Baghdad - people

Forbes magazine revealed the details of thwarting a "conspiracy" to assassinate former US President George W. Bush at his home in Dalat, the capital of Texas, noting that the plot belonged to the "ISIS" organization.

The magazine said in a report, on Tuesday, that an Iraqi suspected of having ties to the "ISIS" organization in the United States was planning to kill Bush, and went so far as to travel to Dallas last November to photograph the former president's home, with the help of a team of his citizens, he hoped to smuggle them into the country across the Mexican border, according to a search warrant issued by the FBI on March 23 and announced this week in the Southern District of Ohio.

The FBI said that it uncovered the scheme thanks to the work of two secret informants, monitoring the account of the suspected plotter on the WhatsApp platform, owned by Meta.

The suspect, who lives in Columbus, Ohio, said he wanted to assassinate Bush because he felt the former president was responsible for "killing many Iraqis" and for the country's collapse after the 2003 US military invasion, according to the memo.

According to the magazine, the case shows how federal investigators continue to monitor ISIS threats even as the group has been severely weakened by US intelligence and military operations in recent years.

It also shows how the FBI, despite its claim that it was prevented from investigating major crimes due to Meta and other tech companies using encryption technology, managed to overcome the elements of WhatsApp's protections by using "old school" methods. For police work and the use of secret informants, and tracking the data they can get from the messaging company.

Shehab Ahmed Shehab describes himself as "a soldier awaiting directions from the leadership in Qatar."

WASHINGTON - The US authorities on Tuesday arrested an Iraqi linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) and the former Iraqi Baath Party, and charged him with preparing for the attempted assassination of former President George W. Bush, with the planning of a group based in Qatar.
And the Ohio Public Prosecution said in a statement that Shehab Ahmed Shehab, 52, was charged with "aiding and supporting a plot aimed at the murder of former President of the United States George W. Bush."
The statement indicated that Shehab tried to recruit other Iraqis and bring them to carry out the attack, and conducted reconnaissance and reconnaissance operations in Dallas, Texas, near places associated with the former Republican president (2001-2009).
Chehab arrived legally in the United States in 2020 on a tourist visa and resided between Columbus in the state of Ohio (northern) and Indianapolis before seeking asylum.
The accused also tried to help a man he thought was an Iraqi to immigrate to the United States in exchange for a sum of money, only to discover later that he was an informant working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Shehab recently made contact with a friend in Qatar, who was a former minister under Saddam, and he has access to large sums of money.

The Public Prosecution stated that "in October and December 2021, Shehab received tens of thousands of dollars" to secure the arrival of this person, who "was in fact a fabrication," noting that "the communication was coordinated under the administration of the FBI."
According to a document released by the FBI on Tuesday, the team members "wanted to kill former President Bush because they believed he was responsible for the deaths of many Iraqis" after his military intervention in Iraq that began in 2003.
Shehab told a man who was actually an informant for the FBI that two members Former members of the Baath Party that ruled Iraq for decades, were supposed to carry out the assassination of Bush with the help of elements of the Islamic State and a group called "Al-Raed".
The accused confirmed that he is a member of this group and is based in Qatar.
In another conversation with the informant, Shehab said that he had contacts recently with a friend in Qatar, who was a former minister in Iraq during the era of the late President Saddam Hussein, and he has access to large sums of money.
The "FBI" stated that Shihab described himself as a "soldier awaiting directions from the leadership in Qatar," and the FBI accused him of planning to supply the Islamic State with materials intended for use in the assassination plot.
The United States invaded Iraq under the administration of Bush Jr. in 2003 and toppled Saddam's regime, starting a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands of Iraqis and displaced millions.

FILE - U.S. President George W. Bush, reacts, after shoes were thrown at him, by a correspondent, during a joint press conference with Iraq Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, not seen, in Baghdad, Iraq, Dec. 14, 2008. Bush is facing criticism after mistakenly describing the invasion of Iraq — which he led as commander in chief — as “brutal” and “wholly unjustified,” before correcting himself to say he meant to refer to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. He added, “Iraq, too — anyway.” The 75-year-old former president made the comment during a speech Wednesday night in Dallas, jokingly blamed the mistake on his age. An Iraqi man living in Columbus, Ohio is in FBI custody in connection with a suspected ISIS plot to assassinate former President George W. Bush. According to a recently unsealed search warrant Shihab Ahmend Shihab detailed his plan to take revenge for the Iraq War to an informant.

That same informant reportedly drove the suspect around Dallas, Texas in February, where he took video and photos of Bush’s home and offices. “President Bush has all the confidence in the world,” said the former Chief of Staff Freddy Ford. “In the U.S. Secret Service, our law enforcement and intelligence communities.”

The FBI claimed that Shihab belonged to a group named Arabic for Thunder, headed until recently by a former pilot for the executed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. The FBI also surveilled the suspect’s WhatsApp account to collect evidence and said he had been living in the U.S. since 2020.

Shihab allegedly told the informant “he wanted to be involved in the actual attack and assassination” and that he “did not care if he died as he would be proud to have been involved.” A federal agent mentioned that he inquired about how to obtain fake FBI and police badges.

The suspect is also accused of trying to smuggle four other Iraqi nationals into the country across the southern border. He is being charged with aiding and abetting the attempted murder of former President Bush which carries a prison sentence up to 20 years, along with being charged with attempting to illegally bring an individual into the U.S., a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
