Iraq opens new berths to raise the value of its commercial exports

Baghdad - people

During the next few days, Iraq is scheduled to open a number of new berths in three main commercial ports on the Arabian Gulf, for the purpose of increasing the value of its exports in the future.

A spokesman for the General Company for Iraqi Ports, Anmar Al-Safi, said in a press statement: "The company has taken many measures in the past period in order to increase the capacity of the volume of imports and cargo, especially in the northern and southern Umm Qasr port, where more than 70 percent of the trade passes through them. Iraq, as well as the port of Khor al-Zubayr.

Al-Safi added, "The coming days will witness the opening of many berths at the level of Khor Al-Zubair, with 4 berths, including the Japanese Misubishi berth. These are projects funded by Japan."

He added, "Also, 5 new berths will be inaugurated in Umm Qasr Port, in addition to the rotation basin, which includes two berths, as well as in the southern port of Umm Qasr there are also new berths, and other berths are being developed."

All of these sidewalks have been modernized with mechanisms, equipment and electronic devices, as most of the transactions have become digital, which helps the company in reducing costs and also helps it complete its work at the required sufficient speed.

Iraq owns five commercial ports linked to the Gulf. In addition to the out-of-service stronghold, there are four other ports: Umm Qasr Al Shamali, Umm Qasr Al Janoubi, Khor Al Zubair, and Abu Flus.

Baghdad is working on the completion of the great port of Faw, which constitutes a major qualitative leap due to its strategic location and its entrance to the deep Gulf waters, which allow the reception of large ships.

In an economy based on oil, and in light of the significant weakness in the agricultural and industrial sectors and the absence of any possibility of obtaining revenue from them, customs duties constitute the most important source of revenue. But the government is also seeking to expand export operations through maritime trade portals.

According to the World Trade Organization, Iraq has exported an average of $97.2 billion in goods and services since 2018, but it was 98 percent of oil and gas.

At the same time, it imports annually an average of nearly $70 billion in various goods and services, such as electricity, wheat, cars, and others.

Al-Safi explained that the Marine Drilling Department began digging the navigation channels and berth interfaces, in order for the depths to receive vessels of normal draft, which are large and giant vessels.

In the past, giant cargo ships unloaded their cargo on small ships called "coasts", and then the small ships reached the Iraqi ports.

But at the present time, cargo ships arrive from their port of departure from any country to the ports of Iraq directly and without any problems or obstacles.

Al-Safi pointed out that the eastern bank of River No. 1 in the port of Umm Qasr, many berths were established on it through investment and contracts for joint operation, after it was a dumping ground and was not prepared to receive cargo ships or dock containers.

Official figures indicate that there is a great development in the ports, for example, the northern port of Umm Qasr last February alone received 37 large cargo ships, a number that the port would not have achieved in one month, in addition to the advanced and large loads and containers.

Joint operating contracts are considered a major resource for Iraqi ports, as they improved the situation and growth of revenues, especially since these companies dealt with large international shipping lines and thus attract them to Iraq.

Port automation

Saturday 02 July 2022 221Port automation

 Abdul-Zahra Muhammad Al-Hindawi

Border crossings in any country represent an important sovereign symbol, because they are related to the economy, trade and security in all its forms, food and health. Therefore, the governments of the world are keen to deal with the border crossing as a sacred sanctuary, which is not allowed to be violated by anyone, and on this basis, The staff working in the port are chosen very carefully, making them able to deal with any situation and any situation, and any problem or crisis that can occur at any moment, as well as the use of mechanisms, techniques and electronic programs, which are difficult to penetrate, and despite these procedures, remain Border crossings are vulnerable to penetration by smuggling mafias.
In Iraq, which has 24 sea, land and air ports, the mental image that crystallized in the minds of many is the negative image associated with corruption and smuggling systems, and the control of this or that party over this port or that, and in previous periods there were many attempts to change these The picture, but it seems that these attempts did not achieve their goals, and perhaps this is related to the two sides of the administration and the will behind any measure that could contribute to cleaning the border crossings from any tumors or tainted administrations, including the low rates of annual revenues for the ports, despite a significant increase Regarding the volume of foreign imports, and it is certain that many of the previous failures are not borne by the successive administrations of the authority, noting the strength and control of corruption systems in the process of entering goods and merchandise, as well as travelers. In the ports, it isCollusion and joint servers between a series of workers at the port, who are from different departments, so the process of striking and cutting these chains, was achieved through the process of rotation of the working staff, and the removal of suspicious elements, and this procedure had a clear impact on changing the courses of work at the ports.
It seems clear that the work of the commission has witnessed a different pace during the recent period. Every day, news brings us an important qualitative measure of procedures in the process of controlling the pace of work in all outlets represented in the seizure of many serious and major violations, such as drugs and smuggling of spoiled food, and much more, This is certainly due to the electronic automation and the continuous rotation of the owners, and the disposal of the corrupt after referring them to the judiciary, which was initiated by the Border Ports Authority and through which it was able to stop, detect and dismantle the networks and mafias that were roaming and roaming without accountability or supervision, and the result of these measures was an increase Note the amount of revenue generated
annually.
But the biggest challenge that the border crossings still face, is that the ports of the Kurdistan region are not subject to the same procedures in force in the federal ports, although all ports should be subject to the federal authorities, and this matter prompted many traders and importers to go to the ports of the region to enter Their imports are due to the low fees and costs there, and on this basis, the supreme interest and economic feasibility calls for reconsidering the customs duties and taxes imposed on imported goods, and reducing them so that our outlets are attractive and not expelling, and a permanent few are better than many intermittent, and we must invest the great progress in the work of the Ports Authority The border crossing, and considering this issue, one of the priorities of the government, and remains the automation of the border crossings implemented by the staff of the Commission, a very advanced step in the advancement of the reality of all our ports.
