Shafaq News / The Iraqi ambassador in Riyadh, Qahtan Al-Janabi revealed, on Sunday, that the Gulf interconnection will completely solve the problem of electricity in Iraq.

Al-Janabi said in a press statement today, which was seen by Shafaq News Agency, that "there is a memorandum of understanding signed between the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, for the purpose of linking the Gulf through Kuwait," indicating that "there is a clear development in this issue and the initiation of this work." very soon".

He added, "It is hoped that it will be completed within a year to solve the electricity crisis in Iraq, given that the six Gulf countries have abundant electric power, and the peak hours in them differ from what is in Iraq."

Al-Janabi explained that "through this link, Iraq will not pay any sums. Rather, its financing will be from the outputs of the Kuwait Conference for the Reconstruction of Iraq, which was held years ago."

The American "Wall Street Journal" reported, in a report today, Monday, that the United States is pushing for a new Saudi-Iraqi project to invest in energy, noting that it is "towards completion ."

And Washington had granted Iraq an exemption from the sanctions imposed on importing Iranian energy, for humanitarian reasons related to plunging Baghdad into darkness without this energy, at a time when Iraq is trying to reduce its dependence on Tehran.

The networking project has been the subject of intense consultations in recent months, as it was discussed during the visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kazemi to Washington last week .

The Iraqi Finance Minister, Ali Allawi, said last Friday that the project "is about to be defined, designed and put up for tenders," adding, "The electrical network in Iraq is likely to be linked to the networks of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait ."

On the other hand, a spokesman for the Saudi Energy Minister confirmed that the agreement "is progressing towards completion" and includes an option for a direct link between Iraq and Saudi Arabia .

"We were working on this," says a senior Trump administration official, referring to the Iraqi electricity grid connected to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Shafaq News / An American newspaper reported on Monday that the United States is pushing for a new Saudi-Iraqi project to invest in the energy field, noting that it is "towards completion."

The "Wall Street Journal " newspaper said, "The United States is seeking to integrate Iraq with its neighbors in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to invest in the energy field, indicating that the US President Donald Trump's administration has urged Baghdad to move forward towards cooperation with these countries in the project of connecting the electricity network," It is a step to reduce Baghdad's dependence on Iranian energy.

And Washington had granted Iraq an exemption from the sanctions imposed on importing Iranian energy, for humanitarian reasons related to plunging Baghdad into darkness without this energy, at a time when Iraq is trying to reduce its dependence on Tehran .

"We were working on this," says a senior Trump administration official, referring to the Iraqi electricity grid connected to the Gulf Cooperation Council countries .

Saudi Arabia recently started talks about potential investments in the $ 2.2 billion Artawi field project, which aims to redirect the large amounts of natural gas that Iraq is wasting toward power generation, according to the Iraqi Finance Minister and a Saudi oil official .

The spokesman for the Saudi Energy Minister added that Riyadh is also studying joint investments in solar energy inside Iraq and electricity exports from renewable projects in Saudi Arabia to supply Iraq .

Iraqi-Gulf relations were severed after the invasion of Kuwait by former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein in 1990, before the United States established an international coalition to liberate Kuwait in February 1991 .

After the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, governments close to Tehran dominated in Baghdad, where Riyadh accused these governments of standing by the Iranian regime .

With the arrival of Al-Kazemi at the head of the Iraqi government recently, this choice prompted Iraq's efforts to improve its relationship with Riyadh and other Gulf countries .

Iraq is facing increasing difficulties in meeting the increasing demand for electricity, as problems with the electrical network have exacerbated, but Baghdad needs to modernize the electrical infrastructure, in order to be able to receive the flow of energy from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait .

Last Thursday, Al-Kazemi told reporters, after a meeting with President Trump, that US officials had helped facilitate meetings in recent months between Iraqi electricity and energy officials and their counterparts in the Gulf states .

The   spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, Ahmed Moussa, said, on August 17, that the first phase of the Gulf interconnection needs 14 months .

Moussa added, according to the Iraqi News Agency, that if the Gulf side begins implementing the first stage of the Gulf interconnection, they need a time limit of about 14 months to complete this stage at 500 MW .

A spokesman for the Ministry of Electricity indicated that Iraq has completed the Faw Abu Flus Line No. 1 and the Al Faw Transfer Station 400, and the “Faw Aboflos Line No. 2” remains, in which the work completion rate has reached 60%, confirming that the Governor of Basra has pledged to complete this line and thus Iraq has completed 80% of the objects .

Baghdad / Al-Akhbariya

The American Wall Street Journal said that the Trump administration is urging Iraq to proceed with a project to connect with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, in light of the steps aimed at reducing Baghdad's dependence on Iranian energy, according to American and Arab officials.

She added that "the electrical interconnection project was the subject of intense discussions in recent months, and it was discussed during the visit of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi to Washington last week."

She explained that "the parties are moving forward towards reaching an agreement and implementing its provisions, which will represent a great rapprochement between Iraq and the neighboring countries."

On Friday, Finance Minister Ali Allawi said, "The project is close to finalizing it, in order to be placed before the relevant parties," indicating that the Iraqi electricity network could be linked to its counterpart in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The newspaper quoted a spokesman for the Saudi Energy Minister, confirming the agreement, and that "it is moving forward to its final stages, and includes the option of a direct electrical connection between Iraq and Saudi Arabia," while a prominent official in the Trump administration stressed the need to link the Iraqi electricity network with the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, In light of the ongoing work to implement this goal, as the electrical connection is one of the many energy projects currently being discussed by Saudi and Iraqi officials.

The newspaper pointed out that the selection of Mustafa Al-Kazemi as prime minister in Iraq, with the formation of the new government, led to a tangible improvement in relations between the efforts made by Baghdad to improve relations with its neighbors in the Gulf.

The "Wall Street Journal" believed that these efforts by Iraq coincided with the desire of the United States to isolate Iran, and to reduce Baghdad's dependence on gas and electricity from Iran.

The "Wall Street Journal" continued that "the electrical connection between Iraq and the Gulf countries is facing challenges, and the Iraqis will need to modernize the electrical infrastructure, in order to be able to receive the electrical flow from the Gulf Cooperation Council system, according to a Western official, who said that this work." It could take a year or more. "

The country is awaiting the completion of the Gulf link

  Baghdad: Omar Abdul Latif

The Committee on Oil, Energy and Natural Resources in the House of Representatives revealed that Iraq has fulfilled all its obligations with the Gulf side, in preparation for linking with it in order to supply Iraq with electric energy. Committee member Sadiq Al-Sulaiti told Al-Sabah: “Iraq has expressed its desire to complete the link with the Gulf countries, and is awaiting the (Gulf Linking Organization) responsible for extending a network of up to 300 km into Kuwaiti territory and connecting it to the Faw point, and there will be (400 station) to receive energy." He added that “the issue of the Gulf linkage and its completion, was raised strongly during the recent visit of Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi and the parliamentary delegation to Kuwait, as he expressed a desire to supply Iraq with about 500 megawatts during the coming summer, and nothing remained but commitments related to (the Gulf Linking Organization). Al-Sulaiti described what happened in the current winter season as a "setback" after reducing electricity generation to 10,000 megawatts due to the reduction of Iranian gas supplied to the stations to 20 percent, attributing that to "Iran's need for gas in the winter season due to the significant drop in temperatures, and the adoption of homes and institutions." In heating the gas systems, "indicating that" there is no income for the accumulation of Iranian debts on the Iraqi side by reducing the amount of gas exported to the country. " And he indicated that "after the rise in temperatures in Iran, the Iranian gas pumping began, as it reached about 50 percent, which led to an increase in the generation of the system to reach about 13 thousand and 500 megabytes," stressing that "the Iranian gas pumping, if it remained at this level," We will be able to cover the need for electric power until the coming months, ”calling on“ the Ministry of Electricity to work to secure gas and begin to complete and maintain all power stations and bring them into work before next May in preparation for the separation the summer".

Baghdad - Awa - Amna Al-Salami The
Ministry of Electricity revealed details of its plans to diversify energy sources, while it is likely that energy production will reach 22 thousand megawatts during the coming summer.
"There are efforts by the Ministry of Electricity to diversify energy sources and adopt solar energy and alternative energies to recycle waste, which crystallized by referring the first licensing round in 5 governorates," ministry spokesman Ahmed Musa Al-Abadi told the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
He added, "The referrals in the first round were made after studying the technical and commercial offers, by 755 megawatts in the governorates of Najaf, Karbala, Babil, Samawah and Qadisiyah," noting that "this tour seeks to generate energy through solar energies by installing solar panels in each of the five governorates." In cooperation with the governors, the solar energy projects need to allocate plots of land. "
He pointed out that "the governors of Najaf, Karbala, Qadisiyah and Babil were cooperating in this field and allocated a group of lands. A group of governors was also addressed to obtain approvals regarding the allocation of lands, so that the ministry could refer the second licensing round in the governorates so that solar energy is a supplement to address the system's situation."
He explained, "The first round, which includes 755 megawatts, will start work on it and it is expected that it will be ready for work next summer," noting that "the ministry had held talks with the Ministry of Oil because it aims to install solar energy systems in the oil fields to generate 750 megawatts." Which will be specific to the Ministry of Oil, and the vital installations of the Ministry will benefit from it, and thus it will positively affect the state of the electric power and the energy system. "
He continued, "These vital installations consume a lot of energy, stressing that the installation of these projects will provide energy for these oil projects, which will reduce the burden on the electrical system in general."
He pointed out that "there is a large number of works to carry out maintenance, including periodic and urgent ones, to maintain the work of the production stations and to complete the maintenance around the summer season, indicating that it is expected that the target production for this year during the summer will reach 22 thousand megawatts."
And that "last summer the production reached 19 thousand megawatts, pointing out that the ministry is seeking in the current production before summer is to reach 22 thousand megawatts in the event that the Iranian side releases gas, as there is a decline in the Iranian gas release."
He went on to say: "Generative stations will be introduced in the fourth month to reach an average production of 22,000 megawatts before the summer, and this will positively affect the energy situation."
He noted that "the ministry is proceeding with solar energy projects, as the work will be divided into phases, of which there are projects of 300 megawatts in Karbala. If these operating companies succeed in producing a part of them, they will enter the system, ruling out the completion of solar energy projects next summer."
He stressed the work to "resume the flow of Iranian gas to reach 22 thousand megawatts in addition to the completion of periodic maintenance, as there are generating units that will enter service at the end of the fourth month."
And that "processing hours will not be equal in the governorates, and it is determined by the size of violations on the network," indicating that "this depends on several factors, including the commitment of citizens and the non-overrun, as well as the volume of consumption in addition to other factors such as defective transformers in the network."
Moussa added, "The ministry has contracts with government companies and the private sector to import transformers, from which a first batch has arrived, and there are other payments that will arrive, but it is not possible to predict the processing hours for the coming summer."

Iraq announces the date of entry into service of the Gulf connectivity

{Local: Al-Furat News} The Minister of Electricity, Majed Al-Hantoush, revealed the date of the entry into service of the electrical connection between Iraq and the Gulf states.

Al-Hantoush told Al-Furat News, "Currently, negotiations are underway to establish the line from the Al-Zour area inside Kuwait to the Al-Faw area, in the south of Basra governorate, up to 300 km."
He added, "We expect at the end of next year to enter the fault, at about 500 megawatts."
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Electricity announced last January that Iraq had completed 80% of its obligations towards the Gulf interconnection. The first phase of the project stipulates that Basra will be supplied with 500 megawatts.
Iraq produces 19 thousand megawatts of electric power, while the actual need exceeds 30 thousand megawatts, according to officials in the electricity sector.
Iraq is holding talks with Gulf countries, led by Saudi Arabia, to import electricity, including linking its system with the Gulf system, after it was relying on Iran to import 1,200 megawatts of electricity and gas fuel to feed local power stations.
Iraq has been suffering from a chronic electricity shortage crisis for decades, as a result of the blockade and successive wars.
Residents have been protesting for many years against frequent power cuts, especially in the summer, if temperatures sometimes reach 50 degrees Celsius.
