The US ambassador to Baghdad, Matthew Tueller, said, in a press statement followed by NRT Arabia, that "through the International Water Conference held in Baghdad, we came across the most important challenges affecting climate change and water resources."
 
Tueller added, "The United States Agency for International Development today signed a cooperation document with the Ministry of Water Resources, and the memorandum is a cooperation and planning tool for water resources management in order to support the Iraqi government in water resources operations and other activities related to water resources."
 
And he continued, "This support and commitment from the US Agency for International Development to the Iraqi government, will continue to support it in planning for water resources."
 
Earlier today, the activities of the Second International Water Conference kicked off in Baghdad, under the auspices of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi, under the slogan (Water and Climate Change), with the participation of Arab and foreign countries.
 
The conference aims, according to its organizers, to achieve sustainable water development and coordination with neighboring riparian countries to reduce damage as a result of water scarcity, in addition to discussing climate changes and their impact on water resources and the global response to this issue.
 
The conference will discuss the exchange of experiences, overcoming water scarcity, the sustainability of surface and ground water, the preservation of biodiversity, and the development of water policy in line with climatic developments in the world.

Mubasher: Minister of Planning Khaled Battal identified the reasons for the lack of water imports for Iraq, stressing that the world is going through a drought problem, so the government is working on studies to avoid the crisis.

Battal told the Iraqi News Agency (INA), today, Saturday, that "the convening of the Second International Water Conference in Baghdad comes in close time on the World Water Day, and at a time when the world is going through an unprecedented way throughout history of rising food prices and the war between two countries: Russia and Ukraine, which are two of the most important wheat exporters to the world, and Iraq in particular.

And he indicated that "this requires the government to reconsider its water policies, which mainly affect economic policies." 

He added, "The problem has exacerbated in recent years with the passing of spots in the world with a drought crisis, which led to a lack of water imports to Iraq, and this was reflected in the agricultural plan, which was reduced to 50 % from last year, and this casts a shadow on the economic situation and food security of the country." .

He pointed out that "the Iraqi government has studies to avoid what happens as a result of the dry years that the world is going through in general."

Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, signed on Sunday a memorandum of understanding to exchange scientific information with the Arab Center for Studies of Dry Areas and Dry Lands (ACSAD).

 

In a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, the media office of the Ministry of Water Resources said that Al-Hamdani signed the memorandum of understanding with the Director General of the Arab Center Nasr Al-Din Al-Obeid, as part of the work of the second day of the second Baghdad International Water Conference.

 

He indicated that the memorandum aims to exchange scientific knowledge, frame joint activities between the two parties and enhance water security, noting that it included strengthening the field of joint cooperation in the field of integrated water resources management, irrigation water management and raising the efficiency of its use.

 

The media office pointed out that the memorandum of understanding also includes developing the technical capacities of workers in the field of agricultural irrigation, raising water and environmental awareness, and working on preparing project documents, studies and joint research plans in line with the priorities of the work plans of the ministry and the organization.

 

It is noteworthy that the Arab Center for Studies of Dry Areas and Arid Lands is a research center related to agriculture and land management, which was established in 1968 by a decision of the League of Arab States and is headquartered in the Syrian capital, Damascus. It is a specialized Arab organization working within the framework of the League of Arab States, with the aim of unifying national efforts to develop Scientific agricultural research in arid and semi-arid areas, exchange of information and experiences, and transfer, development and localization of modern agricultural techniques in order to increase agricultural production in these areas.

{Local: Al Furat News} The Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, announced the final statement of the Second Baghdad International Water Conference, which was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi under the slogan (Water and Climate Change).

In the closing statement, the Minister of Water Resources stated that the conference recommended supporting Iraq’s downstream countries and helping it to confront the water crisis and climate changes, emphasizing the need for the principle of harm-sharing, not throwing pollutants into rivers, establishing a regional bank for water resources, and shifting from an open irrigation system to a system Irrigation is closed, and there is support from many countries and international organizations to assist Iraq in proceeding with this project, which it is hoped will be a guarantee to confront the water crisis in Iraq.

The Minister of Water Resources stressed that the Iraqi government is keen to confront the water crisis through the green paper, and to hold international conferences, saying: Today we succeeded in this conference by sending a message to the world about the importance of cooperation among all, and to help and support Iraq in facing the water crisis and climate change. Pointing out that in 2014, Iraq suffered a lot due to the destruction of a number of central water and dams by terrorist gangs, and the Ministry was able to rehabilitate them while the countries of the world were preparing to confront climate change; That is why the international community must unconditionally support Iraq to face the challenges of climate change.

Al-Hamdani indicated that a number of memoranda of understanding have been signed with several countries to develop the irrigation sector and water resource capabilities, as these memorandums will contribute to supporting Iraq internationally to confront the water crisis and climate changes.

The Minister of Water Resources extended his high thanks to all those who contributed, participated and attended the activities of the conference, especially the supporting bodies of the conference from international organizations and private sector companies, with a sense of the importance of climate change and the need to inform everyone of its effects, which began to appear clearly on Iraq.

The Minister of Water Resources also thanked the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, Hamid Naim Al-Ghazi, and the staff of the General Secretariat for their management and support for the success of the conference. He also praised the efforts of the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior, Defense and supporting bodies.

The minister noted that tomorrow, Monday, there will be a tour with guests and international organizations to visit the Al-Hindiya Dam, which is on the World Heritage List, to clarify the ministry's role in the narrative projects.

Egypt said yesterday that it is one of the countries in the world suffering from "water scarcity", noting that "increasing pressure on limited water resources will lead to the spread of poverty and a decline in the standard of living," which prepares a global move. The Egyptian Minister of Water Resources, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, participated in the opening of the second Baghdad International Water Conference, held in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, under the title “Water and Climate Changes.” The current challenges of managing water resources in light of climate change, during which he reviewed the Egyptian experience in water management. Egypt suffers from a deficit in its water resources, as “the needs are estimated at 114 billion cubic meters, while the resources amount to 74 billion cubic meters,” according to the Ministry of Water Resources. Egypt depends more than 90 percent on its share of the Nile water, which is 55 percent.
A statement by the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources, yesterday, highlighted statements by John Kerry, the US presidential envoy for climate, during the second Baghdad International Water Conference, in which he stressed the "need for upstream countries to cooperate by not affecting dam projects on the water needs of downstream countries."
Corinne Fleischer, the Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa for the World Food Program, was quoted as saying, “Praising the successful Egyptian experience in the field of rehabilitating canals and converting to the use of modern irrigation systems in Egypt,” noting that “the impact of this transformation on achieving an increase in the area of cultivated land, and a reduction in water consumption. and increase the income of the farmer.
In his speech, the Egyptian Minister of Water Resources focused on the negative effects of climate change as a threat to the water sector, noting “the lack of water quantities and the need to reuse it more than once, which leads to a deterioration in its quality.” He added that “increasing pressure on limited water resources will lead to the spread of water.” Poverty and a decline in the standard of living, and that the negative effects of climate change have become a reality we are witnessing in many extreme weather phenomena that have struck many countries of the world.
Abdel-Aty noted “a number of prominent cases of the results of climate changes around the world, such as the sharp decline in the area of Lake Chad in Central Africa and the Aral Sea in Central Asia, and the decrease in snow quantities on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa,” stressing that “Egypt and many Arab countries are among the most countries in the world. The world suffers from water scarcity, which necessitated the development of the necessary policies and the implementation of many major projects to deal with water challenges.
Egypt has drawn up a plan to manage water resources until 2037 with investments exceeding $50 billion, which is expected to increase to $100 billion, according to the minister. It aims to “improve water quality, develop new water resources, rationalize the use of currently available resources, and create a supportive environment for water issues.”
The minister reviewed Egypt’s experience in water management through the implementation of many major projects, such as the rehabilitation of canals and watering canals, the transformation of modern irrigation systems, the expansion of the use of smart irrigation applications, the expansion in the reuse of agricultural drainage water, the expansion of the implementation of seawater desalination projects, and projects Protection of Egyptian beaches, projects to rehabilitate water facilities, relying on technology in water management, in addition to the ministry’s efforts in the field of legislative development through the issuance of the new Water Resources and Irrigation Law and its executive regulations, implementation of many training programs for the ministry’s employees, and many awareness campaigns among citizens about the importance of Water conservation and conservation.
On the sidelines of the conference, Abdel-Aty met with Iraqi Minister of Water Resources Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, where they discussed progress made in joint cooperation between the two countries in the fields of water resources and water management, and ways to enhance it during the coming period within the framework of the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries. It was also agreed to exchange Technical visits between the two sides.
Abdel-Aty said that cooperation between Egypt and Iraq is progressing in full swing in all areas related to water resources, as relations are witnessing great momentum and development in the field of water resources management, in particular to transfer expertise in the areas of adaptation to climate changes, water recycling, disinfection of waterways and raising capacities.
