The "Islamic State" organization launched an attack at dawn today on an Iraqi army headquarters in the eastern province of Diyala, in which 11 soldiers were killed, one of whom was a lieutenant. The authorities suggested that the organization’s fighters would take advantage of “the roughness of the area and low temperatures to carry out the attack and then withdraw to Salah al-Din,” and the governor of Diyala considered that “the neglect of the fighters in carrying out their duties” is the main reason for the attack.

The "Islamic State" organization targeted an Iraqi army headquarters at dawn on Friday in Diyala Governorate, northeast of Baghdad. As a result of the attack, 11 Iraqi soldiers were killed, a military official in Diyala told AFP.

The official, who requested anonymity, said that "11 soldiers, including a lieutenant, were killed in an attack by the "Islamic State" organization, with various weapons, including light ones." At 02:30 a.m. against a headquarters in the Hawi al-Azeem area, located to the north of Baqubah and adjacent to Salah al-Din Governorate.

Diyala province witnesses frequent jihadist attacks, most of which target the security forces and often lead to casualties, while the Iraqi authorities continue their security operations in the Hamrin Mountains area, which extends between the provinces of Diyala and Salah al-Din, to pursue ISIS cells.

In an interview with the Iraqi News Agency, Diyala Governor Muthanna Al-Tamimi confirmed the attack, explaining that it targeted "members of the First Division in the Al-Azim area." He considered that the main reason for "the attack is the fighters' neglect of duty, because the headquarters is completely fortified, and there are thermal cameras, night-visors, and also there is a concrete watchtower."

He explained that "the commander of the First Division has a high level of responsibility, but the terrorists took advantage of the cold weather and neglected to fulfill their duties, to carry out their crime and then withdrew to Salah al-Din."

In late 2017, Iraq declared its victory over the "Islamic State" organization after expelling the jihadists from all the major cities they seized in 2014, while its leader was killed in 2019.

Since then, the organization's attacks in cities have declined significantly, but Iraqi forces are still pursuing sleeper cells in mountainous areas and in the desert.

A United Nations report published in February indicated that "the "Islamic State" organization maintains a large secret presence in Iraq and Syria and wages a continuous insurgency on both sides of the border between the two countries as it extends over the territories it previously controlled."

The report said that "ISIS still maintains a total of ten thousand active fighters" in Iraq and Syria.

The latest and deadliest attack in the capital was last July, a bombing in Sadr City in Baghdad that killed more than 30 people and was claimed by the organization.

Prisoners of Al-Hasakah prison, some of them managed to escape
Prisoners of Al-Hasakah prison, some of them managed to escape

In an operation that raised the alarm for the return of ISIS to the fore, the terrorist organization succeeded in carrying out its largest operation in years, not targeting civilians, but rather targeting a prison housing thousands of wanted terrorists.

On the night of Thursday, Friday, the terrorist organization ISIS launched an attack on Ghweran prison designated for the detention of ISIS members, in the Syrian city of Hasaka, which is controlled by the Syrian Democratic Forces, trying to control it after carrying out a series of explosions in the vicinity of the prison that preceded the attack, to facilitate the storming process and the escape of its terrorists from prison.

Ghweran prison, designated for the detention of ISIS members, houses more than 3,000 ISIS militants, the majority of whom are from Syria and Iraq, as well as other nationalities.

Attack details

The ISIS attack began in the early evening hours, with the detonation of car bombs near the main door of the prison, followed by the outbreak of violent clashes with light weapons, between the security forces responsible for the prison, and the attacking ISIS elements after they infiltrated the prison perimeter from the Al-Zohour neighborhood, south of Hasaka.

The initial clashes thwarted the attempt of ISIS to reach the prison entrance, and their retreat after targeting the fuel tanks and 3 fuel tanks in the Sadkob Foundation near the prison, to take advantage of its rising smoke to prevent the coalition forces from pursuing them.

Helicopters and planes belonging to the international coalition against ISIS participated in controlling the situation, and flew extensively over the city, according to eyewitnesses.

The media center of the SDF stated that the arrested ISIS terrorists burned the blankets and plastic materials inside the dormitories in an attempt to cause chaos.

He added that a number of terrorist cells who attacked the prison from outside the walls fled to the Al-Zohour neighborhood near the prison and hid in civilian homes.

The result of the attack

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitored the high death toll from the violent incidents in Ghweran prison and its surroundings and nearby neighborhoods within the city of Hasaka, since Thursday evening, as the death toll rose to 41, including 20 internal security forces, counter-terrorism forces and prison guards, and 16 From ISIS, and 5 civilians, and the death toll is expected to rise, as there are a large number of wounded, in addition to information about other dead.

In the same context, the sources of the Syrian Observatory confirmed that dozens of ISIS prisoners escaped from Ghweran prison and spread in the vicinity of the prison and nearby neighborhoods, after the terrorist organization’s prisoners took control of the prison and the weapons and ammunition inside it, while the violent clashes continue between the two parties until now.

It is noteworthy that Ghweran prison holds about 3,500 prisoners of ISIS elements and leaders , and it is the largest prison for the organization in the whole world.

The observatory reported that the military forces continued combing the vicinity of the prison and the neighborhoods near it, amid continuous flight of international coalition aircraft, and the sounds of shooting were heard in the area there.

global catastrophe

To talk about the details of what is happening in al-Hasakah, the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Eid al-Rahman, said in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”: “This bloody attack is the heaviest and largest operation carried out by ISIS since 2019, and it is carefully and extensively equipped, as ISIS controls Now on the majority of Ghweran prison, which is the largest prison holding ISIS in the world."

Abdul Rahman added: "At least 16 ISIS militants were killed in the violent clashes that continue so far, while 20 members of the Asayish security forces and prison guards were killed."

This operation is the most violent that ISIS has carried out in 3 years, as explained by the director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights: "Legitimate questions are raised again, so why, for example, are all these ISIS terrorists detained in the middle of a large city like Al-Hasakah? And in an area that has always been largely an incubator for ISIS, Why aren't there extensive security measures to protect this prison, which holds at least 3,500 ISIS prisoners?"

Eid al-Rahman concludes: "The situation is dangerous and catastrophic, especially if things get completely out of hand and ISIS, who are in the thousands, manage to escape from Ghweran prison, and this will be a major security disaster that does not stop at the borders of Syria only, but its evils will affect the region and the world as a whole."

11 Iraqi soldiers were killed in an attack attributed to ISIS in the east of the country

4 minutes

Baghdad (AFP) - Eleven Iraqi soldiers were killed in an attack on an Iraqi army headquarters attributed to the Islamic State group at dawn Friday in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad, a Diyala military official told AFP, in one of the deadliest attacks in weeks.

In late 2017, Iraq announced its victory over the Islamic State after expelling the jihadists from all the major cities they had seized in 2014, while the organization's leader was killed in 2019.

Since then, the organization's attacks in cities have decreased significantly, but the Iraqi forces are still chasing sleeper cells in mountainous areas and in the desert, especially in the governorates of Salah al-Din, Kirkuk and Diyala, where the Friday attack took place, which has not yet been claimed.

The official, who asked not to be identified, said that "11 soldiers, including a lieutenant, were killed in an attack by ISIS militants with various weapons, including light weapons."

It is likely that the organization’s elements “exploited the roughness of the area and the low temperatures” to carry out their attack, which “occurred at about 02:30 am against a headquarters in the Hawi al-Azeem area” located to the north of Baqubah and adjacent to Salah al-Din Governorate, where ISIS cells are still active. .

In an interview with the Iraqi News Agency, Diyala Governor Muthanna Al-Tamimi confirmed the attack, explaining that it targeted "members of the First Division in the Al-Azim area." He considered that the main reason for the attack was "...the neglect of the fighters in carrying out their duties, because the headquarters is completely fortified, and there are thermal cameras, night-glasses, and also there is a concrete watchtower."

He explained that "the commander of the First Division is at a high level of responsibility, but the terrorists took advantage of the cold weather and neglect to carry out their duties, to carry out their crime and then withdrew to Salah al-Din."

"Ten thousand fighters"

In 2014, the organization’s control expanded significantly in Iraq and Syria and seized vast territories in both countries, leaving more than 200 mass graves, according to the United Nations, that may contain more than 12,000 bodies in Iraq and 5,000 in northern Syria.

And security analyst Imad Alo said in an interview with AFP that "the organization is trying to rearrange its ranks and activities inside Iraq," adding that "its repeated operations in Diyala towards the Al-Jazirah region and up to the Iraqi-Syrian border" are an indication of that.

Diyala governorate witnesses frequent jihadist attacks, most of which target the security forces and often result in casualties, while the Iraqi authorities continue their security operations in the Hamrin Mountains area, which extends between the governorates of Diyala and Salah al-Din, to pursue ISIS cells.

The analyst added, "The main reason behind these attacks is the poor training of the security forces, the failure to follow up on their officials, the fighters' failure to abide by the instructions and the low temperatures ... which facilitates access for the organization's members."

These cells also exploit the lands of the strip, which extends in disputed areas where the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and the federal government forces are present.

A United Nations report published in February indicated that "ISIS maintains a large secret presence in Iraq and Syria and wages a continuous insurgency on both sides of the border between the two countries, with its extension over the territories it previously controlled."

"ISIS still maintains a total of 10,000 active fighters" in Iraq and Syria, the report said.

The latest, deadliest attack claimed by the organization in the capital took place last July in Sadr City in Baghdad, in which more than 30 people were killed.

On December 6, four Kurdish Peshmerga members were killed and five wounded in an attack in northern Iraq attributed to ISIS, the third in two weeks.

In October, at least 11 people were killed in an attack on a village in Diyala province in eastern Iraq, which was attributed to the Islamic State group.

Iraqi law punishes members of the Islamic State with the death penalty in accordance with anti-terrorism provisions. The Iraqi judiciary issued this ruling against thousands of Iraqis who joined the extremist organization. However, only a limited number of those rulings were implemented, as this requires the approval of the Presidency of the Republic before implementing the ruling.

ISIS attacks increase in Iraq ISIS attacks increase in Iraq

Despite the passage of 5 years since the defeat of ISIS and the Iraqi government's announcement of a campaign to hunt down the remnants of the organization, the organization is still launching strong attacks targeting the military and civilians in Iraq and Syria.

During the past hours, 11 Iraqi soldiers were killed in an attack that targeted an Iraqi army headquarters in Diyala Governorate, northeast of Baghdad, according to the Iraqi News Agency, "Ina".

The attack, which occurred more than 120 km north of the capital, Baghdad, was one of the most violent attacks targeting the Iraqi army in recent months.

Diyala governorate witnesses frequent jihadist attacks, most of which target the security forces and often lead to casualties, while the Iraqi authorities continue their security operations in the Hamrin Mountains area, which extends between the governorates of Diyala and Salah al-Din, to pursue ISIS cells.

A message from ISIS

Regarding these attacks, security expert Ahmed Al-Shawqi said that they contain signs of the return of ISIS, noting that "the return does not mean only control (over large areas of the land), but means that civilians, neighborhoods and civilian forces are increasingly targeted."

In his interview with Al-Hurra website, Al-Shawki added that the terrorist organization, through these attacks, wants to send a message that "it exists, and can return."

Security expert Sarmad Al-Bayati stressed that the organization's reliance on guerrilla and hit-and-run war will make it difficult to eradicate it permanently.

In his interview with Al-Hurra, Al-Bayati said that the organization's sleeper and mobile cells took advantage of the desert geographic nature in the areas near the governorates of Salah al-Din and Diyala, in their latest attack.

He pointed out that guerrilla warfare is one of the most dangerous wars; Because the attacker chooses the appropriate time and place for him, as happened in the last attack on Diyala, so he chose the time at dawn, taking advantage of the freezing cold, and that the attack is with a limited number of fighters.

In late 2017, Iraq declared victory over the Islamic State after expelling the terrorists from all the major cities they seized in 2014, while its leader was killed in 2019.

Since then, the organization's attacks in the cities have decreased significantly, but the Iraqi forces are still chasing sleeper cells in mountainous areas and in the desert.

A United Nations report published in February indicated that "ISIS maintains a large secret presence in Iraq and Syria and wages a continuous insurgency on both sides of the border between the two countries with its extension over the territories it previously controlled."

"ISIS still maintains a total of 10,000 active fighters" in Iraq and Syria, the report said.

The last of the bloodiest attacks in the capital was last July, a bombing in Sadr City in Baghdad that killed more than 30 people and was claimed by the organization.

The reason for the increase in attacks

Al-Shawki attributed these attacks to a security defect resulting from the lack of centralization in the decision, and the multiplicity of the parties controlling the land from the army to the Federal Police, the Peshmerga forces and some armed factions, which led to the dispersal of the military decision and the process of exchanging information, as he put it.

Al-Shawki pointed out that the failure to return the displaced to their areas, which were previously controlled by ISIS, created deserted cities, stressing that the sleeper cells of the terrorist organization exploit these "soft" places to organize and launch attacks.

Al-Bayati also attributed the recurrence of these operations to the lack of security coordination in the areas between the control of the federal authorities and the Kurdish forces.

Al-Shawki stressed that the border separators between the Kurdistan region and the Iraqi governorates extend for a distance of 600 km, and in some areas reach a depth of 40 km.

In addition to the weakness of preemptive intelligence, and the end of the role of the international coalition, which was carrying out air strikes on the organization's hideouts.

The federal government in Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government, in the north of the country, formed a security partnership to push back the threat of the resurgence of ISIS.

“It will increase in the coming period.”

An Associated Press report in mid-December described this partnership as "fragile", and considered it a new test in Iraq's war against the terrorist organization.

"ISIS took advantage of the opportunity in the past, but we coordinate, and our coordination starts from here, in this village," the head of Kurdish Peshmerga operations in the area, Naqib Hajar, told The Associated Press in December.

The report says that Kurdish Peshmerga forces have positions along the Qarachok mountain range, but Peshmerga Colonel Qahar Jawhar says that Kurdish forces do not have orders to stop ISIS militants as they cross to launch attacks or carry out operations against them due to caution against entering the disputed territories.

ISIS militants move at night, using tunnels and hide in caves, while the Peshmerga lack basic equipment including night vision devices, according to the report.

"That's why ISIS can terrorize the population, because we can't see them," Jawhar said.

The ISIS attack on Diyala coincided with an attack by the organization’s members on Ghweran prison in Hasaka, northern Syria, which is the largest prison housing the organization’s elements, which resulted in the killing of 18 Kurdish forces.

Al-Shawki stressed that ISIS operations will increase in the coming period; Because he will try to exploit the tense political situation in Iraq to increase his threats.

Iraqi Colonel Yasser Al-Jourani was kidnapped on December 13 during a hunting trip in the Hamrin Mountains (social networking sites)

The hunting trip of a high-ranking Iraqi officer at the Ministry of Interior in the Hamrin mountain range turned into a tragedy for his family of seven children and his wife, after ISIS presented an operation to slaughter him during the past hours in the region that has witnessed great activity for months for the organization, which resulted in the killing and wounding of dozens of security personnel and civilians. .

qualitative military operation

The director of the Adhamiya Passports Department in Baghdad, Colonel Yasser Al-Jourani, was kidnapped on December 13, during a hunting trip, accompanied by two people from Diyala province .

The government's efforts, which were made from the first moments of his kidnapping, only succeeded in revealing his fate in the past two days, after a qualitative military operation by the Counter-Terrorism Agency in the region, which resulted in the killing of two ISIS members.

During the operation, the Counter-Terrorism Service found the body of one of the kidnapped, and the other was severely wounded by gunshots by ISIS members, after which he was transferred to Baquba General Hospital, to die hours later.

According to Diyala police, the injured kidnapper informed the force that carried out the operation that ISIS had killed Colonel Yasser Al-Jourani a few days after his abduction.

long war

A day after the military operation launched to liberate the kidnapped, the organization displayed horrific pictures of al-Jurani's beheading on Twitter accounts , announcing the adoption of the operation, which it considered the beginning of what it called its "long war" against the Iraqi security services.

The organization continues its attacks on areas located on the outskirts of the provinces of Diyala, Kirkuk and Salah al-Din located in the Hamrin mountains and hills, targeting the Iraqi security forces and their collaborators from the residents of these areas through ambushes with explosive devices or lightning attacks on villages at night.

The attacks during the current year resulted in the killing and wounding of hundreds of members of the security services from the army, the police, the Popular Mobilization and a number of civilians, but they seemed limited compared to what witnessed at the end of 2019 and early 2020 a significant increase in the rate of ISIS operations.

vow to avenge

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi condemned the "crime", vowing to avenge "ISIS" in a series of qualitative operations in the region.

The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Major General Yahya Rasoul, said that Al-Kazemi directed the intensification of the intelligence effort and the continuation of qualitative operations to eliminate the gangs of the organization.

The majority of Iraqi political blocs and personalities condemned the incident, calling for a qualitative operation against the organization, which would prevent it from expanding again in the country's cities.

Al-Jourani's killing drew wide attention from social media followers, who called on the Iraqi government to punish the organization and not be satisfied with data, considering what happened "a great insult to the security services that cannot be tolerated."

question marks

For his part, Director of the Jumhouria Center for Security and Strategic Studies Moataz Abdel Hamid said, "The incident raises many question marks," explaining, "We need to decipher many circumstances, including the reasons for the officer and his two friends going on a hunting trip in a security-restricted area, especially as he is at the rank of High Military.

He added, "There are many areas known for hunting and secured, such as the Anbar desert and Samawah. The victim is aware of the danger of going to those areas where ISIS is active, and no one can reach them unless he is familiar with the terrain of the region."

Abdel Hamid wondered about ISIS knowing his identity, especially since he was in civilian clothes and on a hunting trip, noting that many possibilities are on the table, including that "the video clip may be fabricated and the organization is trying to exploit it."

The media is responsible

Ali Shnyar, the victim's father, accused the media and social networking sites of causing the death of his son at the hands of ISIS.

Shnyar said in press statements that his son is a skilled fisherman, and he has an identity approved by the Iraqi Fishermen Association, and he used to go on fishing trips from time to time in different parts of the country, indicating that his family did not know at first that ISIS was behind his kidnapping, because information about him was lost. Fully.

Shnyar blamed the media and social media for the killing of his son, as it published in the early days his picture and his military ranks, which helped the organization to know his true identity, pointing out that his son could have evaded ISIS because he is a hunter and is not known by the organization to belong to the security establishment. .
