Shafaq News/ An informed political source revealed, on Sunday, that the leadership council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan voted on Barham Salih as the party's candidate for the presidency of the republic for a second term.

 

The source told Shafaq News Agency, that the leadership council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan held a closed meeting today in Sulaymaniyah Governorate headed by the co-chair of the party, Bafel Talabani.

 

He added that the meeting discussed his candidate for the post of President of the Republic of Iraq, and unanimously approved that Barham Salih be the only candidate for the presidency.

 

And in the political tradition, during the past presidential sessions, a candidate from the National Union received the position of the Presidency of the Republic.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party won 31 parliamentary seats in the Iraqi legislative elections, compared to 17 seats for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. Following these results, the KDP announced the candidacy of Hoshyar Zebari for the presidency.

The new parliament's presidency has set a date no later than the end of February 8, to receive the nominations for the presidency.

The source told Shafak News Agency; A high-level delegation from the Kurdistan Democratic Party has arrived in Baghdad to settle the presidency.

The source added, that the delegation is headed by the Democratic candidate for the post Hoshyar Zebari, and the delegation includes the leaders of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Jaafar Aminiki, Shwan Muhammad Taha and Omid Sabah.

And the Kurdistan Democratic Party stressed, earlier today, Monday, that the position of the President of the Republic is deserving of the Kurds, but that it does not belong to anyone.

An informed source in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, told Shafaq News Agency, that "the leadership council of the Union held a closed meeting in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, headed by the co-chairman of the party Bafel Talabani, discussed his candidate for the post of President of the Republic of Iraq, and unanimously approved that (Barham Salih) be the only candidate for the position.”

However, an informed source in the Sadrist bloc told Shafak News Agency last Saturday that strategic alliances with Sunni and Kurdish partners are able to win the three presidencies and pass them comfortably, noting that the announcement of the formation of the new government will be soon if the Kurds agree on the presidential candidate.

The meeting headed by Bafel Jalal Talabani took a serious position on this issue, believing that the Kurdistan Democratic Party deviated from the will of the unity of the Kurdish people and the Kurdish political forces, and signed an agreement with some political parties and presented its candidate for the position of president within the framework of the agreement.
In this regard, Bafel Talabani highlighted the current developments in detail, stressing that "at a time when other parties present their candidates away from the principle of the agreement, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has the right to consider the position of the President of the Republic as a right of the Kurds and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, as one of its rights that Don't compromise on it.

He pointed out, "The President of the Republic has broad powers in accordance with Article 73 of the Constitution, including ratification of laws and agreements, preparation and issuance of a special amnesty and others. It is an important position and not a protocol."

Shafaq News/ A source in the coordination framework stated, on Tuesday, that the framework forces will vote for the current president, Barham Salih, under the parliament to occupy his position for a second term.

 

The source told Shafaq News Agency, on condition of anonymity, that "the candidate of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Barham Salih, is the choice supported by the majority of the framework forces to occupy the position of President of the Republic for a second term."

 

He added, "Saleh will be the official coordination framework option, in the coming hours."

 

The coordination framework includes Shiite forces: the State of Law coalition, the State Forces Alliance, the Victory Alliance, the Al-Fateh Alliance, the Ataa Movement, and the Virtue Party.

 

On the other hand, indicators suggest that the Sadrist bloc led by Muqtada al-Sadr is the closest to the Kurdistan Democratic Party.

 

Saleh is competing for the position of President of the Republic with the Kurdistan Democratic Party's candidate, Hoshyar Zebari.

 

According to the political custom followed throughout the previous sessions, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has held the position of President of the Republic since the overthrow of the previous regime in 2003.

 

But in terms of numbers, the fact that the Kurdistan Democratic Party won 31 parliamentary seats in the recent legislative elections, compared to only 17 seats for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, may reverse the equation this time.
