Why do spirit dolls go viral in Indonesia?

Why do spirit dolls go viral in Indonesia?

TheIndonesia.id - Recently, spirit dolls are viral in Indonesia. It’s occurred since a number of Indonesian celebrities openly admit that they raise spirit dolls like their own children.

They said that raising (or keeping) spirit dolls will bring luck to them. However, the pros and cons immediately come among netizens. Moreover, when those artists also shared their activities with the spirit dolls they adopted. As a matter of fact, they care for the dolls like a human baby.

So, what are spirit dolls? And why do they become popular in Indonesia?

 Spirit Dolls Definition

Spirit dolls are considered dolls filled with spirits of people who have died. Those who take care of the doll will refer to the doll as their adopted children.

Since there is a belief that the doll is possessed by a spirit, those who adopt the doll will treat it like the owner’s foster child. Besides, the spirit doll’s foster parents also said that the doll also could die.

Where Can Spirit Dolls Be Found?

Quoted from various sources, it is known that the trend of spirit dolls originally come from Thailand which started in 2014. Now, spirit dolls can be found in a number of online marketplaces in Indonesia.

Talking about the prices, it varies from hundreds of thousands to millions of rupiah. Some dolls even reach hundreds of millions of rupiahs. The average sales of spirit dolls in a number of online marketplaces do provide information regarding the benefits of adopting them, and the type of spirit dolls.

It is also said that spirit dolls are harmless and unobtrusive since they have been educated and are happy to serve their masters. In fact, there is also information that states that spirit dolls can find their own food. However, they need to be given gifts occasionally. For example, flowers, food, or coffee.

The owners of spirit dolls believe that the dolls can bring good luck to them. Especially for those who take good care of the spirit dolls.

Pros and Cons

Spirit Dolls

The trend of adopting spirit dolls certainly reaps pros and cons among Indonesian people. There are those who think that playing spirit dolls is actually no different from small children playing with various forms of dolls. As long as you can distinguish between reality and hallucinations, it's not a problem.

Meanwhile, a number of religious leaders said that the adoption of spirit dolls could not be justified by religion in particular when it comes to beliefs related to spirit dolls that can bring good luck. This cannot be justified from a religious point of view.

Thai’s are known to be a superstitious bunch, and the Luk Thep baby doll tradition is no different. Want to know more about the fascinating Luk Thep culture that made headlines around the world? Read our article to find out more about this unique tradition and the ongoing search for good fortune.

What is a Luk Thep?

Luk Thep, or “Child Angels” are plastic, life-like baby dolls that are believed to be possessed by spirits that bring about good luck and future prosperity. Luk Thep are treated like any other baby or child, they are fed, dressed and cradled. The lifelike manufactured dolls have become a large and (somewhat) normal part of everyday life for Thai people as well as a worldwide sensation that international media outlets latched on to.

How did the Luk Thep tradition come about?

Mae Ning is the individual largely responsible for setting the trend of turning the humble plastic doll into revered carriers of good fortune. Mae Ning, who is a doll seller is also a Hindu ritual expert (although self-professed) and a local radio DJ, she claimed on air that the dolls to have superpowers. Shortly after the statement Buddhist monks and fortune tellers held rituals to place “lucky” spirits into the plastic dolls. Thai celebrities were quick to jump on the bandwagon and were seen carrying Luk Thep where ever there went. Taking the dolls to swanky restaurants and nail spas and even demanding separate plane seats for them. Thai Smile a national low-cost carrier of Thai Airways even allowed “parents” or “guardians” of the Luk Thep to purchase seats for their Child Angels, for them to be offered onboard meals and briefed flight attendants to treat them like any other child passenger.

Where does the Luk Thep tradition originate from?

There are a few different theories on the origins of Luk Thep, with some making the assumption that Luk Thep are updated versions of Kuman Thong. Kuman Thong were fetuses which had passed away before being born which were kept and believed to carry the spirit of the dead child. Others believe that the Luk Thep tradition is tied to Thailand’s low fertility rate, as middle-aged Thai women are most often the ones toting these sacred dolls about. Another common belief is that due to the challenging economic climate in Thailand in 2016 when the tradition was born, Thailand’s citizens needed something to cling on to (literally). However, the consensus sways more towards the Luk Thep culture being connected to the fusion of Thailand’s strong Buddhist belief and influences from Hinduism, animism and object worshipping traditions.

Next time you see a life-size doll being pampered and doted on by a bunch of adoring adults in the Land of Smiles, you’ll know exactly what is going on and be able to fill in the blanks for any bewildered travellers.

3 Dec – The Scared Riana is a name well known throughout the world, having made a lasting impression as the winner of the second season of "Asia's Got Talent" with her act as the creepy magician-cum-illusionist.

With her ghost-like appearance, The Scared Riana - real name Marie Antoinette Riana Graharani – attracted the attention of Indonesian film production company, Nant Entertainment, to produce the movie "The Sacred Riana: Beginning".

The movie follows Riana's journey to becoming a magician and all the questions in regard to her tricks and illusions will be answered in the movie.

"The Sacred Riana: Beginning" was released in Indonesia last March, where it received a positive reception from audiences and this has prompted the producers to follow it up with a sequel.

"Yes, if you watch the ending of the movie, you will know that there will be a sequel. Currently, the sequel is in the post-production stage and it is expected to be released in 2020," said Nan Entertainment.

One of the cast members, Aura Kasih, admitted that prior to the filming, she initially thought it was strange having to act with someone who doesn't speak.

"The first time I met her, I did say 'hi' but there was no reply and at that time I thought that was strange. However, I eventually got used to it and if there was anything that we had to discuss, I would talk to her manager because The Sacred Riana will only communicate with her manager if she would like to express something."

Apart from Aura, the Billy Christian-directed movie also stars Agatha Chelsea, Prabhu Revolusi, Citra Prima, Alif Brooklyn and many more.

"The Sacred Riana: Beginning" is set to haunt the big screen in local cinemas from this 12 December.

The Sacred Riana Gets Asian Horror Anthology Series

Indonesian magician the Sacred Riana will star in an Asian horror anthology series from Fremantle Media.

BY MATHEW SCOTT  AUGUST 27, 2019 4:54AM

The Sacred Riana Gets Asian Horror

Indonesian magician and illusionist the Sacred Riana left America’s Got Talent fans spellbound with her run to the quarterfinals, and her videos have attracted hundreds of millions of viewers across YouTube and Facebook.

Now the 27-year-old is getting a show of her own, thanks to a collaboration between Fremantle and Wahana Kreator Nusantara.

The Sacred Riana: Bedtime Stories is an English-language, Asian horror anthology series set around the continent and inspired by folklore and urban legends,” the companies said in a joint statement released Tuesday. “Each self-contained, stand-alone episode has a unique cast and storyline, delivering Asian horror to a worldwide audience.”

The Sacred Riana (known offstage as Marie Antoinette Riana Graharani) first gained international attention with her winning run on the second series of Asia’s Got Talent in 2017, the region’s own version of the Simon Cowell-created American hit.

The artist creeped out audiences with her plays on a character who leans heavily on the influence of the Japanese horror classic The Ring (1998), with a matching doll that’s a nod to the Hollywood hit The Conjuring (2013). The series in development will also feature her magic and illusions, according to the statement.

“The fact that we are developing an international drama for the world stage, led by an Indonesian superstar such as the Sacred Riana, just shows us all how our industry is changing and great content can come from all corners of the world,” said Chris Oliver-Taylor, Fremantle’s CEO for Asia Pacific.

The partnership is also developing Ex Addicts, a romantic comedy series centered around the lives of people who can’t get over their exes. Both shows are slated to hit markets toward the end of 2018, according to Tuesday’s release.

Fremantle Developing Horror Anthology Series With ‘Got Talent’ Star The Sacred Riana

Fremantle is developing an English-language scripted project starring Indonesian magician and illusionist The Sacred Riana after striking a partnership with Indonesian firm Wahana Kreator Nusantara.

The American Gods producer is developing horror anthology The Sacred Riana: Bedtime Stories, an English-language series inspired by folklore and urban legends. The Sacred Riana got to the quarter finals of America’s Got Talent.

The two companies are also adapting a local podcast into a scripted series. Ex Addicts, which is based on the Klub Kecanduan Mantan podcast, is a romantic comedy series centered around the lives of a group of quirky people with one common ailment: they can’t get over their exes. In desperation, they establish a support group to help them in their efforts to move on.

Fremantle’s Asia Pacific CEO Chris Oliver-Taylor said: “The Sacred Riana: Bedtime Stories is an outstanding addition to Fremantle’s global drama slate. The fact that we are developing an international drama for the world stage, led by an Indonesian superstar such as The Sacred Riana, just shows us all how our industry is changing and great content can come from all corners of the world.”

“We are really excited about our partnership with Fremantle and thrilled to be involved with The Sacred Riana: Bedtime Stories”, added Salman Aristo, CEO of Wahana Kreator Nusantara. “Fremantle is an ideal partner to support us in developing the episodic drama, Ex Addicts, based on our Klub Kecanduan Mantan podcast, which was recently released on the Joox music streaming platform.”
