Former Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi revealed that, about 48 hours before the assassination of the Iranian general Qassem Soleimani, he received the deputy head of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Authority, Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, a call from US President Donald Trump.

"Trump called me last New Year's Eve around nine o'clock Baghdad time, and he thanked us for ending the storming of the American embassy," Abdul Mahdi said in a testimony he gave in favor of a documentary about the airport incident.

According to Abdul-Mahdi, he suggested to Trump "either direct negotiations with the Iranians, or tacit agreements, as has been happening since 2003," noting that "Trump told me: What you can do in this regard, we are ready for it."

Abdul-Mahdi confirmed that "there was approval and an official invitation to Soleimani to come to Iraq to discuss," but added that "the assassination was not designed within a day or two, but it must have been decided not shortly before." Abdul Mahdi did not disclose whether he believed Trump's credibility in negotiations with Iran.

Today, Saturday, Deputy Defense Minister of Iran, General Reza Talay Nik, said that the nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, was assassinated with a smart remote-controlled automatic weapon.

In an interview with Channel One on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the assassination of Fakhrizadeh, General Talaei Nik said, "The weapon used in the assassination of the scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was a smart family weapon that was controlled remotely without the help of a direct human factor," adding, "Yes, there were factors Humanity monitors the implementation of the mission with the smart weapon used remotely.

On November 27, last year, the Iranian Ministry of Defense announced the assassination of Deputy Defense Minister Mohsen Fakhrizadeh Mahabadi, in the Absard Damavand area near the capital, Tehran, with an armed attack targeting his convoy on his return from northern Iran.

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh is an officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, and a professor of physics at Imam Hussein University (peace be upon him) in Tehran, and is described as the "father of the nuclear program".

The Iranian authorities accused Israel and the People's Mojahedin Organization of being behind the assassination, which it said "was carried out in a complex manner and in which advanced devices were used."

The assassination of the scientist Fakhrizadeh dealt a severe blow to the Iranian security services, which were imposing restrictions on his movements.

Fakhrizadeh was identified as a "key figure" in a 2007 United Nations report on Iran's nuclear program, and in 2008 the United States ordered an asset freeze along with other Iranian officials.

Fakhrizadeh is believed to have headed what the International Atomic Energy Agency and US intelligence services believe was a coordinated nuclear weapons program in Iran, but the program was suspended in 2003.

For his part, Hamid Fakhrizadeh, son of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, called on the authorities in his country to "work to identify the individuals and groups who prepared to assassinate his father over the past twenty years."

Hamid said in a statement published by Iranian official media today, Saturday, that "despite the importance of the method of his assassination, but most importantly, the identity of the individuals or groups who prepared for the assassination must be identified."

He continued, "The political currents surrounding the scientist Fakhrizadeh and the country's nuclear industry must be carefully examined in order to find the perpetrators and killers who assassinated a person whom the notorious Israeli regime and global arrogance have sought to eliminate for 20 years."

JERUSALEM — Israel’s former military intelligence chief says the country was involved in the American airstrike that killed Iranian general Qassem Soleimani in January 2020. It was the first public acknowledgement of Israel’s role in the operation.

Soleimani headed the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s elite Quds Force and helped orchestrate Iran’s involvement with paramilitary groups abroad. He was killed in a U.S. drone strike at the Baghdad airport in January 2020, an incident that threatened to pull the countries into full-blown conflict.

A week after the airstrike, NBC News reported that Israeli intelligence helped confirm the details of Soleimani’s flight from Damascus to Baghdad. Earlier this year, a Yahoo News reported that Israel “had access to Soleimani’s numbers” and gave that intelligence to the United States.

But Maj. Gen. Tamir Heyman, the now-retired general who headed military intelligence until October, appears to be the first official to confirm Israel’s involvement.

Heyman’s comments were published in the November issue of a Hebrew-language magazine closely affiliated with Israel’s intelligence services. The interview was held in late September, a couple weeks before his retirement from the military. The authors wrote that Heyman opened the interview by talking about the American airstrike that killed Soleimani, but in which Israeli intelligence played a part.

“Assassinating Soleimani was an an achievement, since our main enemy, in my eyes, are the Iranians,” Heyman told the magazine. He said there were “two significant and important assassinations during my term” as head of army intelligence.

“The first, as I’ve already recalled, is that of Qassem Soleimani — it’s rare to locate someone so senior, who is the architect of the fighting force, the strategist and the operator — it’s rare,” he said. Heyman called Soleimani “the engine of the train of Iranian entrenchment” in neighboring Syria.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria in the past decade, but rarely publicly comments on them. Israel has said, however, that it has targeted bases of Iranian-backed force and arms shipments bound for Iran’s proxy, the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah.

Heyman said that Israeli strikes had succeeded in “preventing the attempt by Iran to put down roots in Syria.”

The Israeli military did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Heyman’s remarks.

The interview was published as world powers and Iran were engaged in negotiations to reach a new agreement to curb Iran’s nuclear program. The previous deal, struck in 2015, unraveled after the United States unilaterally withdrew in 2018 and re-imposed crippling economic sanctions on Iran.

On Wednesday, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan was scheduled to meet this week in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett to discuss “a range of issues of strategic importance to the U.S.-Israel bilateral relationship, including the threat posed by Iran,” National Security Council Spokesperson Emily Horne said.

Israel considers Iran its regional arch-foe, and says it will take any steps needed to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.
