Omicron is approaching Iraq

Sunday 12 December 2021 188Omicron is approaching Iraq

 Baghdad: Shatha Al-Janabi

The Ministry of Health called on the government to tighten procedures at border crossings and examine arrivals from countries that recorded infections with the new mutation, in addition to the importance of citizens’ commitment to preventive measures, and at the same time warned of the danger of the new epidemic wave.
A number of Arab countries announced that they had recorded infections with the new mutation, including countries neighboring Iraq, such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait. The Director of Health Promotion, Dr. Haitham Al-Obaidi, told "Al-Sabah": "There are no guarantees that the mutated virus (Omicron) will not be transmitted to Iraq, so border controls must be tightened and arrivals from countries that witnessed infections with this mutation must be tightened." He pointed out that "a number of Arab countries neighboring Iraq recorded infections with the new mutation, such as Jordan and Kuwait," noting that "the absence of prevention portends the danger of the new epidemic wave."
Al-Obaidi explained that "the complications caused by (Omicron) are still unknown, but there are indications to evaluate it, which is that the speed of its spread is twice the speed of the spread of the (Delta) mutant because it contains 3 genes from other previous strains."
He added, "Omicron's symptoms begin with headache, throat pain, shortness of breath and digestive problems, and the average person can only detect it through laboratory tests."
Al-Obaidi called for “the patient’s urgent review of health institutions when he feels symptoms of fever, cold and joint pain, or conducting tests or visiting a specialist doctor, to prevent the exacerbation of their sick conditions, in addition to receiving vaccinations for the target groups to form antibodies against all mutations, as well as wearing a mask and social distancing.” .

Mubasher: The World Health Organization announced the discovery of the “Omicron” mutant from the Corona virus in 89 countries, pointing out that the mutant spreads faster than its “Delta” counterpart.

The organization added - according to the British "Sky News" channel, today, Saturday, that it is not clear whether the cause of the spread of the "Omicron" mutant is immunodeficiency or due to transmission and gatherings, according to the Middle East News Agency.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the technical official in charge of combating Corona at the World Health Organization, said that this information is preliminary and that there is still a need to answer more questions so far.

Mubasher: The Ministry of Health and Environment in Iraq confirmed, today, Saturday, that the vaccine protects against the danger of the Omicron mutant at a high rate.

The ministry's spokesman, Saif Al-Badr, said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), that "there is no vaccine that is 100% effective, this is for all vaccines, whether for Corona or others, as all vaccines and all preventive means in the general sense are prevented by a certain percentage."

And he indicated that "vaccines achieve a protection rate of 80 to 90 and 95 percent sometimes, as it depends on the person receiving the vaccine."

The spokesman added, "The confirmed preliminary information proves that the vaccine is effective on more than one strain, whether micron or other strains, and the World Health Organization stresses the need to receive vaccines and continue vaccination operations in an extensive manner."

Al-Badr stressed that "the Ministry of Health owns laboratories capable of diagnosing the Omicron strain or others."

The spokesman indicated that "meetings are continuing, whether at the Ministry's center or the Diwaniyah Order Committee 217, regarding the mutated Corona virus Amikron, as the Supreme Committee for National Health and Safety meets periodically, to study the developments of the virus and take decisions."

The global trend of merchandise trade fell by 0.8% in the third quarter of the year, the World Trade Organization said on Monday, adding that the emergence of the Omicron mutant of the Corona virus increased the odds that the expected growth rate in 2021 would not be achieved.

The organization indicated in a statement on its website that the volume of trade declined between July and September as a result of supply chain disruptions, lack of production inputs and an increase in cases of Covid-19.

She said that the growth target in 2021 could still be achieved theoretically, but the emergence of the Omicron mutant "turned the balance of risks towards the downside, which increased the chances of more negative results."
