Shafaq News/ The Security Media Cell reported on Sunday that the fortified Green Zone in the center of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, was subjected to missile shelling.

The cell said in a statement today, that the Green Zone was bombed by two Katyusha rockets, where the first was detonated in the air by the Ceram system, and the second fell near the celebrations square, causing damage to two civilian vehicles.

According to the statement, the security forces began an investigation process and determined the launch site.

Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi was subjected to a "failed" assassination attempt last January.

At the time, the cell said that the assassination attempt was carried out by a booby-trapped drone that tried to target his residence in the Green Zone in Baghdad.

The Green Zone, which includes the headquarters of the government, parliament, and foreign missions, has been bombed by Katyusha rockets several times, and no specific party has claimed responsibility for those launches.

Too right....no telling how long the “ investigating process “ will take. Notwithstanding the fact that I’m pretty sure there will be “ holidaze “religious or otherwise, and a celebration or two thrown in for good measure.

UTV - Baghdad

Security experts said that the latest Katyusha attack in Baghdad represents a message sent from outside the border to the United States because of the faltering "Vienna" talks on Iran's nuclear file.

A Katyusha rocket landed on Sunday morning inside the Green Zone in central Baghdad, according to what the Security Media Cell announced in a statement.

Security sources said that one of the two missiles landed near the US embassy, while the other “Se Ram” system was pushed outside to land near the monument of the unknown soldier, hitting a civilian car that was parked there.

The attack coincides with the announcement of the start of the withdrawal of US combat forces from Iraq in light of an agreement that took place between the two sides within what is known as the strategic dialogue talks.

Security expert Ahmed Al-Yasiri told UTV that "the failure of the seventh round of talks on the Iranian nuclear file is what prompted internal armed parties to target the US embassy to deliver a message from abroad."

Informed sources speak of a violation of the armistice between the armed factions and the government, as a warning that anticipates the date of the withdrawal of US combat forces from Iraq before the end of this year.

Strategic analysts believe that a "third party" in support of the survival of US forces wants to end the truce in order to find a pretext for their activity in the country.

Security expert Adnan al-Kinani told UTV that "it seems that there are those who want to ignite a fuse between the resistance that gave a deadline for withdrawal and the government."

At a time when US interests are still being targeted, the government is refraining from authorizing or interfering, apparently by transferring the current security crises to a more stable government that has sufficient parliamentary support for confrontation.

Iraq: Americans leave to stay

RT

Mariana Belinkaya wrote in "Kommersant" about the transition of US forces in Iraq from one mission to another.

The article stated: The "Green Zone" in Baghdad, where the American embassy is located, was bombed again, on Sunday night, just a week after the announcement of the end of the American combat mission in Iraq.

The early announcement of the end of the US military mission in Iraq does not mean in any way the withdrawal of foreign forces from Iraq. This announcement is directed to the public in the United States and Iraq, to give the illusion that the authorities are keeping their promise. But this is not what the Iraqi parliament voted on at all, and it is not what Shiite groups have demanded.

In fact, the coalition has practically not participated in counterterrorism ground missions in Iraq since last summer, and has contented itself with only training and intelligence activities. The number of foreign military personnel in Iraq will not change in the near future - about 2,500 Americans and about 1,000 representatives of other countries that are members of the anti-terror coalition. According to the head of the Central Command ( CENTCOM ) of the US armed forces, General Frank McKenzie, once NATO, as promised, expands its mission in Iraq, the Americans will reconsider their presence in that country. NATO's plans to increase the number of military instructors from 500 to 4,000 were announced again in February. There will also be about 900 US troops on the border with Iraq, in Syria.

In the interview with The Associated Press, General McKenzie stressed that the United States, despite transitioning to a non-combat role in Iraq, will continue to provide the Iraqi military with air support and other necessary assistance in the fight against ISIS. The general is also concerned about Iran's growing influence in Iraq. However, it became more difficult for the forces loyal to Iran, according to him, to reach the Americans, as the Americans abandoned the bases they did not need. He said, "In fact, they want all American forces to leave, but all American forces will not leave," and "this may lead to a violent reaction towards the end of the month."
