 Baghdad: Omar Abdul Latif

The Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce revealed a "road map" for joining the World Trade Organization, calling for the amendment of some important laws in preparation for obtaining membership in the World Trade Organization.
The head of the union, Abdul Razzaq Al-Zuhairi, told Al-Sabah that Iraq has been seeking for ten years to obtain membership in the World Trade Organization by holding intensive meetings with the competent authorities to discuss this file.
Al-Zuhairi summarized Iraq's needs to join this organization with three points. The first includes amending some laws and setting plans that jump the country from 172 to 120, according to the global ranking, and second, the World Bank's indicators for the country must be positive.
He added, as for the third point, it confirms that the country's budget is approved without some of its paragraphs being challenged by the Federal Court, in addition to the need for its law to include a number of strategic projects.
He pointed out that Iraq is characterized by an investment environment, funds and a position that qualifies it for economic progress, noting that joining this organization will improve Iraq's image among the countries of the world.
Regarding the union’s obtaining the membership of the Executive Committee of the Federation of Arab Chambers of Commerce, Al-Zuhairi affirmed that it will contribute to Iraq’s entry into the Arab economic system, after it had been absent from it for a long time, pointing out that the step would serve the economy through Arab trade exchange and transport operations.
and transit.
Regarding the meeting of the Arab Chambers of Commerce, which was hoped to be held in Baghdad this month, the head of the Federation of Iraqi Chambers of Commerce stated that countries had requested a postponement due to the situation in the region or in Iraq, which gave an indication and a non-positive impression on the economy country.

Erbil (Kurdistan 24) - The World Trade Organization (WTO) has announced the postponement of its first ministerial conference in four years, due to the emergence of the worrisome protozoan Omicron.

After an emergency meeting, the 164 WTO members agreed to postpone the 12th Ministerial Conference "indefinitely" in the wake of the Omicron outbreak.

"This does not mean that negotiations should stop, but on the contrary," WHO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said in a statement.

The World Trade Organization is the first international organization in Geneva to bear the consequences of the emergence of the mutant omicron, which was initially spotted in South Africa and classified by the World Health Organization as “alarming” a few hours before the WTO ministerial meeting was postponed.

Attention now turns to the World Health Organization, whose 194 members are due to discuss a pandemic treaty next week.

Initially, this ministerial conference was scheduled to be held in Kazakhstan in June 2020, but it was postponed after the first cases of Covid appeared at the end of 2019.

What outbreak ... some reported cases of a mild flu.  Every cold & flu virus are covid viruses. It's just that covid19 was manufactured and came out of China.

I totally agree with you jg1 ... have the conference and get Iraq into the WTO asap..! Ron

or was it ..."soon"

“ in the near future or just around the corner “ works just as well. Both are very non committal to any timeframe. They might be “ working “ towards acceptance to the WTO  for many moons.

Shouldn’t they as they had said already been in the WTO in 2021 ?? I didn’t believe it then so I’m certainly not disappointed nor surprised “ they still have work to do”
