{Economic: Al Furat News} The Ministry of Planning announced that the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control has won membership in the councils of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries.

A statement issued by the ministry, Al-Furat News Agency, received a copy of it from the head of the Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control, Hussein Ali Daoud, who headed the Iraqi delegation to the twenty-second meeting of the Institute’s Board of Directors and the sixteenth meeting of its general assembly, which was held in Medina, Saudi Arabia. He said that "the Iraqi Central Organization for Standardization and Quality Control participated, along with 45 Islamic countries and several regional and international organizations."

He pointed out, "The results of the elections that were conducted, resulted in Iraq winning the membership of the Institute's Board of Directors (SMIIC/BoD) and the Accreditation Council (Smiic/AC) for the period 2022-2024, which enhances the position of the Central Organization for Standardization at the level of standardization for the countries of the Islamic world.

He stressed the importance of these meetings in unifying joint Islamic action in various standardization activities, strengthening quality infrastructure systems in member states, coordinating the preparation of standard specifications among Islamic countries to ensure the removal of barriers to trade, and setting up a system for the issuance of certificates and accreditation in order to speed up the flow of products across borders between member states. , to increase Islamic trade integration.

It should be noted that these elections are held every three years, during which a group of member states is elected to represent all Islamic countries in these councils and work on preparing plans and following up on their implementation.

What is the SMIIC?

 

The Standards and Metrology Institute for the Islamic Countries(SMIIC), as a sound mechanism for harmonization of standards among the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation(OIC) countries and for preparation of new ones, aims at realizing harmonized standards in the Member States and eliminating technical barriers to trade and thus developing the trade among themselves. It shall establishes certification and accreditation schemes for the purpose of expediting exchange of materials, manufactured goods and products among Member States beginning with mutual recognition of certificates.
