The opening remarks by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, on the SDG moment 2021.

The SDG Moment serves to place an annual spotlight on the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) and is held at the beginning of the United Nation’s General Assembly’s High-Level Week. It takes place as the world experiences a deeply uneven response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which risks creating a two-tier recovery with significant implications for the advancement of the SDGs, especially in developing countries.

Convened by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the Moment provides world
leaders with a platform to showcase the bold plans, actions and solutions that are needed to end the COVID-19 pandemic and set the world on course towards achieving the SDGs. Held in advance of major meetings on food systems, climate, energy, jobs and social protection, the SDG Moment event is expected to build the momentum needed to deliver on the Decade of Action and Keep the Promise of the SDGs.

The President of the Republic arrives in New York

 Baghdad: morning

Yesterday, Monday, the President of the Republic, Dr. Barham Salih, arrived in New York to participate in the work of the United Nations General Assembly at its seventy-sixth session.
A statement issued by the Presidency of the Republic confirmed that during this participation, Saleh will deliver Iraq's speech at the meeting of the General Assembly, and it is expected that the President of the Republic will meet during his participation in New York a number of leaders and leaders of countries present at this session.
On September 23 of last year, the President of the Republic, Dr. Barham Salih, delivered Iraq's speech from Baghdad via "video conference" at the work of the United Nations General Assembly at its seventy-fifth session, which took place via satellite due to the conditions of the Corona pandemic.
In his speech, Salih stressed that the national project in Iraq is based on the consolidation of the capable state and the ability to impose the law, refusing that the country be an arena for conflicts and settling the accounts of others, pointing out that an independent, sovereign Iraq will be a meeting point for the common interests of the peoples and countries of the region, and a starting point for a regional system. Based on economic cooperation and joint security in the face of terrorism, he reiterated his call, which he made in the work of the United Nations General Assembly at its last session, to form an international coalition to fight corruption and recover looted funds, similar to the International Alliance against Terrorism, and to help Iraq in combating corruption and prosecuting the corrupt. World leaders participating in the meeting will deliver their keynote speeches in New York for 4 days, starting today, Tuesday, September 21. And he quoted an intervention by the Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fouad Hussein, in which he referred to the preparation and preparation for early elections and the arrival of international observers, as the United Nations Security Council decided to support Iraq in the electoral process, and accordingly the observers were sent, and Hussein called on the Arab League to send observers like the organization International and the European Union.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry spokesman continued: "In another aspect of his intervention, the minister touched upon the Baghdad Conference for Cooperation and Partnership and its outcomes, declaring that the ministerial committee of the conference will hold a meeting in New York on the sidelines of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly."

During the meeting, the Iraqi foreign minister stressed that  the Baghdad conference would turn into a platform for sustaining dialogue between the concerned countries, creating a state of cooperation and stability in the region, building economic partnerships and protecting Iraq from external threats.

Iraq witnessed a historic event by hosting a number of leaders and officials of neighboring countries around one dialogue table, on Saturday, August 28, in a conference of partnership, crisis resolution and cooperation against terrorism in order to secure the region and protect its stability.

In their final statement, the participants in the conference called for unifying regional and international efforts to achieve stability in the region.

The United Nations General Assembly will hold its 76th session in New York, with the participation of about 100 heads of state or government, amid continuing warnings about the dangerous epidemiological and climate situation in the world.

This international forum is being held under the weight of Corona, whose outbreak last year led to its holding via video for the first time in the history of the United Nations, which was established 76 years ago.

Among the leaders who announced the presence of the United States, Iraq, Brazil, Turkey, Germany, British and Israeli prime ministers, and French President Emmanuel Macron will be absent from the meeting, whose circles justified his abandonment of attendance by the imposed health restrictions.

The unprecedented diplomatic crisis between the United States and France will be present, as well as the issues of Afghanistan, Iran and climate change, and the opening session is scheduled to begin later in the day until September 27.

President Joe Biden will defend his decision to end America's military mission in Afghanistan in a Tuesday address to the United Nations.

Biden's debut address to the 193-member body since taking office in January comes three weeks after a chaotic U.S. exit from Afghanistan that resulted in the deaths of 13 American service members and an incomplete global evacuation mission of vulnerable Afghan nationals and U.S. citizens from the country.
