Shafaq News/ The military commander of the Peshmerga forces, Major General Sirwan Barzani, expressed his fears of the re-emergence of ISIS after the withdrawal of US combat forces from Iraq at the end of this year.

"We are very afraid of the return of ISIS," Sirwan Barzani said in an interview with the French newspaper "Le Monde," calling on the US combat forces to stay in Iraqi cities.

The military commander went on to say, "We fear a repetition of what happened after former US President Barack Obama's decision in 2011 to withdraw his country's military forces from Iraq and the resulting emergence of the terrorist organization ISIS, and its invasion of vast areas of Iraq."

Sirwan Barzani also indicated in the interview that "Iraq still needs the technology of the international coalition against ISIS, especially drones, and thermal cameras," adding that "the survival of the coalition forces is important to the morale of the Iraqi population."

The French newspaper stated that the Kurdish leaders rule out a repetition of the Afghanistan scenario in Iraq or what happened in 2014 in the country, and the collapse of the Iraqi army in front of ISIS.

Le Monde quoted those leaders as saying: The Iraqi army has gained great experience in confronting terrorist organizations.

Iraq and the United States agreed last July to withdraw all American combat forces from Iraq by the end of 2021.
