 Baghdad: Mustafa Al-Hashemi
The art of marketing sometimes succeeds in solving the problems of depression or stagnation, as it plays an important role in reaching the consumer, in order to dispose of the goods and products of companies. Recently, a phenomenon called (the strange box) or (the box of surprises) has spread in Iraq, and on social networking sites. Or (the magic bag), which is a group of products and devices of different sizes and types, placed in a box that is marketed by the company as being worth more than its real value.
Although this process takes place outside the controls and away from oversight, the fever of competition by some weak-minded people, has damaged the reputation of companies that have gained wide acceptance by a large number of citizens because of their credibility in their advertisements that they promote on Facebook pages.
Ibrahim Mustafa, 33, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “When I browsed the advertisements on my (Facebook) page, I was drawn to an advertisement from a company, calling for the purchase of a box at a price of 25,000 dinars containing a set of devices that exceed their advertised price. The devices are electric irons, hair dryers, telephones, headphones, charging and connecting cables, and other devices.
He continued, "I wanted to try my luck, so I called the page and left my phone number and address for them, and in the evening the delivery representative called me and handed me the box after receiving the price and the delivery fare.
Mustafa called for caution against "some fake pages that promote such an idea, by following the comments written by followers and buyers who often describe these companies as fraud and defrauding citizens."
In turn, Wafaa Mansour told Al-Sabah: "These companies promote their products through Facebook only, and we do not know whether they have a real presence on the ground or not? Also, the products or devices cannot be sure of their suitability for work, because the representative will leave as soon as he receives the wages of the box and transport What could expose the citizen to fraud and robbery in this way."
Mansour considered the necessity of imposing control on such acts, which harm citizens and the family economy through the intervention of economic security services and holding violators accountable.
For his part, the Director of the Market Research and Consumer Protection Center, Dr. Yahya Kamal Al-Bayati, called for "activating the Consumer Protection Council, imposing control over these cases, limiting the exploitation of citizens, and holding the weak souls accountable, who target the economy of the country and the citizen, alike."
In his speech to "Al-Sabah", he stressed the importance of "supporting small businesses, but they must be subject to law and oversight," noting that "the private sector has succeeded in devising new ways of marketing, which calls for employing its ideas to market our national products."
He added, "Such companies must have a real presence so that the citizen can return the damaged goods purchased from them, in addition to activating the Consumer Protection Law, similar to the Product Protection Law, so that the regulatory authorities can hold these companies accountable."

This is pretty huge news. Having a company like FB put up an office in Iraq is massive. Progress!

Just wondering, (because I honestly don’t know) what goes on at a Facebook regional office? Do they only employ local Iraqis? I’d hate to be the executive in Menlo Park that gets notified that you’ve been transferred to Baghdad…

Kinda like being in the Air Force and finding out your next duty assignment is the Arctic 🥶
