VIVA – Diabetes causes a person's blood sugar levels to be too high. Knowing the early signs and symptoms of this chronic condition can make the sufferer get treatment faster, thereby reducing the risk of more severe complications.

Some of the complications caused by diabetes include heart disease, nerve damage or neuropathy, kidney disease, eye disease to vision loss, sexual problems in men and women, amputations, to life-threatening risks.

Therefore, taking preventive measures is certainly very important so that it does not lead to a more severe condition. Here are some early signs of diabetes to watch out for, reported by Medical News Today, Thursday, August 5, 2021.

Frequent urination
When blood sugar levels are high, the kidneys try to get rid of the excess sugar by filtering it out of the blood. This can cause sufferers to urinate more often, especially at night.

Easy thirst
Frequent urination causes the body to lose extra water. Over time, this can lead to dehydration and cause the sufferer to feel thirstier than usual.

Always hungry
People with diabetes often do not get enough energy from the food they eat. The digestive system breaks down food into simple sugars or glucose, which the body uses as fuel.

In people with diabetes, this glucose is not moving enough from the bloodstream to the body's cells. As a result, diabetics often feel hungry, even though they haven't eaten for a long time.

Tired easily
Diabetes can have an impact on a person's energy and cause the sufferer to feel very tired. This fatigue occurs as a result of not enough sugar moving from the bloodstream to the body's cells.

Tingling, numbness or pain in the hands or feet
High blood sugar levels can affect blood circulation and damage the body's nerves. In people with diabetes, this can cause pain or a tingling sensation or numbness in the hands and feet.

This condition is known as neuropathy, and it can worsen over time and lead to more serious complications if diabetes is not treated.

Dark patches on the skin
Dark patches that appear in the folds of the neck, armpits or groin, can also indicate a higher risk of diabetes. This skin condition is known as acanthosis nigricans.

Itching and fungal infection

Excess sugar in the blood and urine can cause infection. Yeast infections tend to occur in warm, moist areas of the skin, such as the mouth, genital area and armpits. The affected area is usually itchy. However, there are also those who experience burning, redness and pain.
