"Three Cambodian dogs were successfully trained to detect COVID-19," said Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) Director General Heng Ratana on Monday, August 2, 2021.

The dogs had been trained with scent samples, known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), on 48 COVID-19 patients from the Cambodian University of Health Sciences technical team, and all samples were examined by polymerase chain reaction. (PCR) and cell culture techniques to ensure safety, he said again as quoted by Xinhua, Tuesday (3/8/2021).

"CMAC and the University of Health Sciences are collaborating on research and development of COVID-19 detection dogs, and at this early stage, we are pleased to inform that three CMAC detection dogs were able to detect VOCs from 48 COVID-19 patients and seven other dogs are making remarkable progress. normal," Ratana wrote on her Facebook page.

The trained dogs can sniff and detect scent samples within 10 to 15 seconds, he said, adding that the use of COVID-19 detection dogs is effective for large crowds such as airports, international border checkpoints, stadiums and so on.

Ratana said that the COVID-19 detection dog training was held at the initiative of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen.

He added that the dogs were trained by local trainers at the CMAC Training Center in Kampong Chhnang Province.

"According to experts, there is no official evidence proving that COVID-19 can be transmitted from humans to dogs," Ratana said.
