The outbreak of the new Corona virus in the Chinese city of Nanjing recently reached five provinces, in addition to the capital, Beijing, which led to hundreds of thousands of residents being placed under closure restrictions, coinciding with the authorities’ endeavor to eliminate the worst outbreak the country has known for months.

China had previously boasted of being able to successfully eliminate the epidemic on its soil, after the first virus-related closure the world witnessed, early 2020, when the virus leaked from Wuhan to other provinces.

However, the outbreak that China is currently witnessing is different, as it is driven by the mutated strain of the "delta" virus, which is highly prevalent, which spread after its infiltration into the country from Nanjing Airport, located in the eastern Jiangshu Province.

Chinese media described this outbreak as "the largest spread of the virus since Wuhan," according to the British newspaper, "Daily Mail".

Nanjing recorded 184 cases of the virus, on Friday, after it was confirmed that 9 cleaners at the airport had contracted the infection, on July 20.

The authorities linked at least 206 injuries, distributed across the country, to the infected group in Nanjing.

"It was discovered that these cleaners participated in cleaning the cabin of flight CA910", arriving from Russia on July 10, said airport health official Ding Jie.

As a result, the authorities imposed a closure in Nanjing, and checked its population of 9.2 million people, twice.

Two cases were monitored in the Changping District of Beijing, which led to the placement of 41,000 residents of the city in closed apartment complexes, on Thursday.

These injuries constitute the first local cases reported in the capital in six months.

The outbreak is the largest in several months, posing a challenge to China's relentless efforts to contain the virus.

The Chinese authorities blamed officials at Nanjing Airport for "poor supervision and unprofessional management", including not separating cleaning workers who worked on international flights from their colleagues working on domestic flights.

And it was proved that the first cases in Nanjing belonged to people who had been vaccinated, which led some to question the effectiveness of local vaccines.
