 Baghdad: Mustafa Al-Hashemi
After the Chairman of the Ministerial Council for Energy, Oil Minister Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail, announced last month the signing of the largest contract with an Emirati company to generate electricity from solar energy, the Central Bank of Iraq, in cooperation with the Higher Committee for Lending in the Council of Ministers, launched an initiative to switch to the use of renewable energy sources, To reduce carbon emissions and improve the environment with the participation of environmental experts and energy generated from renewable sources.
A statement by the Central Bank, which Al-Sabah received a copy of, said that this comes “in order to set the executive framework for financing such development projects, whether at the level of individuals or at the level of investors in the field of clean energy.”
He added, “The Central Bank, in cooperation with the concerned authorities, will support the preparation of controls that oblige the owners of residential investment projects to rely on renewable sources to secure part of the electric energy, as a condition for its inclusion in the Central Bank’s initiative to finance housing projects.
"The Central Bank and the Higher Committee for Lending are looking forward to 2022 being a national year for renewable energy in Iraq," he added.
And the Central decided to directly install electricity generation systems from solar energy on a number of its buildings in Baghdad and its branches in Basra, Mosul and Erbil to secure part of its electricity needs.
For his part, the academic economist, Dr. Majid Al-Baydani, pointed out the possibility of reducing the electrical loads from the national grid, by employing clean energy in a number of household uses.
Al-Baydani stressed that “the application of the idea of the Central Bank in generating electricity from renewable energy will reduce the dependence on national electricity for the uses and consumption of citizens, as it suffers from problems in generation, production and distribution, and then solar energy will provide additional rates of energy that can be used at home for devices with Low capabilities such as television or charging phones and others.
Last June, the Ministry of Electricity signed a contract with the Emirati Masdar Company, sponsored by the Chairman of the Ministerial Council for Energy, the Iraqi Minister of Oil, to generate 2,000 megawatts, through the establishment of investment projects for solar energy in the center and south of the country, saying: “Iraq is implementing the energy replacement plan.” Clean energy, instead of energy produced by fossil fuels, at a rate of (20-25) percent of the energy produced, which is equivalent to (10-12) kilowatts.
Specialists in the field of solar energy see the possibility of using it in Iraq to generate electricity from it for domestic uses, because the country enjoys long hours of sunshine, especially during the summer day, but sometimes it exceeds the rates of the ultraviolet scale of 11 degrees, which requires the adoption of special techniques when Solar cell industry in Iraq.
