VIVA – The peak of the meteor shower will occur on Wednesday today, July 28, 2021 from the Aquarid and Capricornid Deltas. This annual phenomenon of the Delta Aquarid meteor shower is associated with the dusty trail of Comet 96P Machholz.

When a comet races around the Sun, the heat of the star causes it to release bits of material left in its orbit.

Earth crashes into this cosmic field every year resulting in the Delta Aquarid Meteor Shower between July and early August this year.

At the same time, the Earth was also passed by Comet 169P/NEAT. The tiny particles and debris that are shed by icy bodies and burn up as they fall through the atmosphere produce beautiful and sometimes colorful displays of light.

If you're lucky, you might have the chance to see a fireball or two this week. A fireball is a very bright meteor that can be seen over a large area.

The peak of the meteor shower from these two events will occur today at 10.00 WIB / 11.00 WITA / 12.00 WIT. However, according to the National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN), the meteor shower can only be witnessed at 19.45 WIB/WITA/WIT from the East-Southeast direction until July 29, 2021 at 05.30 WIB/WITA/WIT from the West-Southwest direction.

Delta Aquarid produces meteor showers that are steady although not as spectacular as the Perseids. Astronomers typically expect up to 20 meteors per hour to appear during the peak phase. The meteor shower will appear to be entering the sky from the constellation Aquarius, which is located close to the gas giant Jupiter.

"Delta Aquarid will be a difficult rain to observe. So if you are determined to spend a few hours viewing the meteor then summer deck chairs can make the viewing experience much more comfortable," the astronomer said.

The silver lining radiating from the constellation Capricornus signals the Alpha Capricornus Meteor Shower which will also peak on the same day. Although very few meteors are expected to be seen, some interesting fireballs can bring charm to the show as the show progresses.
